PARENTING WITH A SMILE

This image may be a bit extreme, but, believe it or not, a pastor who was friends with my father in law, actually wanted to arrange a marriage between Paul and his daughter.  I’m eternally grateful that he didn’t carry through, but sometimes extreme parenting can get in the way of a good relationship with your children.

As most parents will tell you, it’s hard to let go of our children. As the mother of three I’ve had to let go three times and still worry about them from time to time. When God blesses us with children, He also lays on us the responsibility of caring for them, teaching them the right things and giving them what will prepare them for the future.  When they take their first steps, we’re right behind them to catch them if they fall.  When they learn to ride a bike, we add training wheels to make it safe.  We cover their precious little heads with helmets. We provide safety gear, booster seats, hand sanitizers, masks and good nutritious food to keep them healthy and strong.  We want them to have a better childhood than we did.

There comes a time when we have to let go of that sheltering protection and let them learn through their own experiences.  God does that with us every day.  He allows challenges to come into our lives so that we learn how to deal with them.  He knows the pain we feel.  He has experienced the suffering of losing a child.  Still, He is our loving Father and lets us go – like the prodigal son’s father, He is always waiting for that child to return. Letting go isn’t easy, but letting God is.

GOD LOVES ME DEARLY

August Dietrich Rische (born February 5, 1819 in Minden ; † November 15, 1906 in Ludwigslust ) was the author of the lyrics for the children’s hymn, “God Loves Me Dearly.  The hymn was written in 1852 by this young Lutheran pastor, who was working with homeless and disadvantaged children.  It’s a hymn that lives like an ear worm, once it gets into your head.  The simple text, with each verse being followed by the same refrain, tells of the love of God in a tender, understandable, passionate and caring way.

1 God loves me dearly,
grants me salvation,
God loves me dearly,
loves even me.

Refrain:
Therefore I’ll say again:
God loves me dearly,
God loves me dearly,
loves even me.

2 I was in slav’ry,
sin, death, and darkness;
God’s love was working
to make me free. [Refrain]

3 He sent forth Jesus,
my dear Redeemer,
he sent forth Jesus
and set me free. [Refrain]

4 Jesus, my Savior,
himself did offer;
Jesus, my Savior,
paid all I owed. [Refrain]

5 Now I will praise you,
O Love eternal;
I will praise you
all my life long. [Refrain]

I remember learning this hymn when a small child in Sunday school.  Each verse shows the amazing love and grace of God, through the gift of His own precious Son, Jesus.  When I think about Valentine’s Day, I can’t help but think of the eternal, unconditional love of our abiding Savior.  He is the epitome of true love.  He was willing to give up His throne in heaven – become a human being for 33 years – live a life of poverty and never had a permanent residence – gave up everything for love.  His ultimate sacrifice during the week of His passion – made Him the unblemished lamb being led to the slaughter.  He is God, yet He fulfilled what we were unable to do by becoming one of us.  He took our sins and guilt to the cross and buried them within the grave.  He conquered Satan and gave everyone hope for a future in paradise by rising from death on the third day.

We celebrate Valentine’s Day one day a year.  One day we overload on flowers and candy or a special dinner with the one we love.  One day!  Jesus loves us every single day of our existence.  He never gives up on us.  He will never leave us.  He is our champion, our deliverer, our eternal love.  Don’t limit the love you have for those whom you love.  Every day should be a day to share your heart with that person.  Jesus loved us so much, He gave His life to assure our place in heaven.

MY SHEPHERD, MY KING

RELIEF SCULPTURE, JESUS, THE GOOD SHEPHERD BY PAUL BOECHER – POETRY BY KATHY BOECHER

Slowly crossing the sands of time – into a pasture green sublime.

I’ll rest my feet and wet my lips, with waters clear and cold that grips.

Through danger I will walk with Him.  He guards me from each foolish sin.

He takes my hand and leads me now to comfort me and show me how

to live my life and live it right and when I stray He sets me right.

When my own final hour comes near, I’ll face my death with no more fear.

I’ll trust in His unfailing love – which He bestows from up above.

With Him in paradise I’ll live.  He promised me He did forgive

each one of my transgressions.

HEART & SOUL

I can still recall sitting at an old upright piano, with another sharing the piano bench and playing the high notes while I plunked out the chords

Heart and soul, I fell in love with you,

Heart and soul, the way a fool would do, madly,

Because you held me tight,

And stole a kiss in the night.

It was the student recreation room of an ancient building.  My high school was a relic, which would eventually be demolished and replaced with a spanking new building.  My class would have the honor of being the first class to graduate in that new edifice.  The old building held three years of wonderful memories, including that old piano.  I didn’t have one a home.  I didn’t know how to read notes, but I had a knack for being able to play a familiar tune and add a few improvisational chords. It was in that building that I met the love of my life.  I didn’t realize it at the time.  We were simply the best of friends for those early years and finally noticed each other as soul mates during our senior year.

This time of year, always stirs memories of first love and excites the heart to remembering all the years beyond that awakening.  We were so different from one another.  That carried into our marriage. He had a sensitive side, was a romantic at heart, yet he loved the outdoors, adventure and exploring new horizons.  His love for the arts extended into his love for the Lord.  An outgoing, gregarious, confident young man while I was just the opposite.  I had a creative bend as well and we even talked about someday collaborating on some children’s books which I would write and he would illustrate. I had a poor self-image.  I never felt good enough, pretty enough, funny enough, or outgoing enough.  I had not yet established a good relationship with God, (even though I had God in my life from little on.)  See, I was a mess.

Over almost 58 years of marriage, we’ve shared many Valentine’s Days.  He would always remember me with flowers or candy or both.  He often would gift me with a hand painted Valentine while I opted for a store-bought card with fancy words and beautiful images. Our love has grown from those days sitting at an old piano.  We’ve muddled through life at times, wondering if we’d have enough to make the house payment.  We’ve suffered through various physical problems, illness and hospitalizations, but seem to come out stronger from each one.  We made three children who have in turn given us three wonderful grandchildren and supported us through this process called aging.

Our lives togethers have had many ups and downs, but we’ve learned to depend on God to get us through each one and He hasn’t disappointed us – ever.  One of the secrets to our successful marriage is that we respect each other and our own personal space.  Our talents run along the same lines, but they don’t interfere with each other.

I am blessed to have this man in my life.  He has given me more than I can ever repay.  He has loved me even when we argue.  Yes, we still argue, but the arguments don’t last as long, because we don’t have the physical or mental energy to sustain them.  God is our fortress and will continue to be throughout eternity.

So, as we approach the final years of living, I thank God for this wonderful man and for blessing me with His own love and mercy.

Heart and soul, God fell in love with me.

Even though He had no reason to, gladly,

Because He holds me oh so tight,

Through every day and dark night.

GROW OLD WITH ME, THE BEST IS YET TO BE

POETRY BY KATHY BOECHER

Today, my husband becomes and octogenarian. I will catch up with him in June. We’ve known each other since we were thirteen and he has been my best friend through all those years. I wrote this poem a few years ago and a lot has happened in that time, but I know that God is the head of our family and with Him, we’ve weathered many a storm. Many more Happy Birthdays, Paul. I will love you through eternity.

We join our hands together,

Hands that have grown wrinkled and leathered with time,

Still the touch of your skin against mine delights and excites,

The broken, withered digits, which over time have grown weary,

The tightness of your grip,

Give comfort and support.

Walk with me, my love.

Our days are growing shorter.

Our nights seem to last forever,

As sleep becomes a fortress of sorts,

Walk with me upon this mortal coil,

While we still have life within us,

Our paths will meet again, my love,

When heaven opens wide its gates,

Where we shall walk eternally together,

With new bodies,

New life,

Newness that will never age.

SECRETS

We are all sinners. We live in the shadow of our first parents, Adam and Eve and therefore cannot escape the wages of sin, which is death. I think when we know God provided us with the perfect solution for our redemption, by sending His own Son, Jesus, to carry the burden of sin to the grave upon His own shoulders, it lightens the load considerably. What greater love is that?

Unfortunately, confessing our sins is not an easy task, especially when we do so in the corporate fellowship of our church. The fact that we do not list our various sins publicly has to do with guilt and shame. I recently read a book about a young mother who had serious doubts about her ability to parent properly. She was a single mom with several children. She felt guilty for not being the picture-perfect mother. She didn’t feel she as fulfilling the job as she should. The guilt dominated her thinking to the point of depression, which led to neglecting some of the parenting obligations she held in high esteem. Eventually she was able to express her feelings at a Bible study with other moms who had the same issues. It opened the door to conversation which was beneficial to all.

On the other hand, I also recently heard a pastor talk about opening up to his men’s Bible study about a past sin that truly troubled him. Even though he had walked away from that sin and turned his life to focus on Jesus, the guilt he carried was a heavy burden. Hoping to spur others to discuss some of their own issues proved fruitless and the experiment went nowhere. Was it because of the differences in men and women? Was it because the men didn’t feel any guilt? Were the women over-reacting? Any number of reasons could contribute to the outcome of these situations, but maybe talking with someone else about a feeling of guilt or shame carries weakness with it.

When we talk directly to the Creator who already knows our every sinful deed, we’re actually confronting the One who we’ve sinned against. He is the One we’re accountable to but confessing a wrongdoing to another human being seems much more difficult for us. Maybe that’s why so many therapists are needed today. With all the guilt being laid upon us – the shaming that goes on in our world, the bullying, the feelings of inadequacy, we are bound to feel overwhelmed.

There is healing in confession. Knowing that God has already forgiven us is a great reminder of our relationship with Him and the gift He has so bountifully blessed us with. Guilt will remain. We take that guilt to Him along with our confession. He knows our hearts better than any other being and He still loves us. When He looks at those hearts, He only sees His Son and the “paid in full sticker” He has purchased for our sins.

We will never have picture-perfect lives while we live here, but we do have an eternity of perfection waiting for us in Paradise. At the start of a new week, remember that you are loved by God more than any human being can love you. Walk with Him every day and you will receive hope for the future.

GET OVER IT!

Do you ever feel like you’re drowning – not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually? There are days when I wonder if I’ll ever be able to accomplish a given task.  I fear I’ll never have the strength or energy I did even ten years ago.  There are days when I can get a lot done and other days when I feel totally useless.

I come from a long line of strong women.  They all possessed a pioneer spirit – were willing to work hard and make sacrifices.  They lived long lives, filled with trials and adversities, but always came out like tempered steel.  I often feel more like a wimpy piece of aluminum foil.

So where did those women derive their strength – their persistence – their fortitude?  My own mother was a God-fearing woman who suffered through betrayal, chronic persistent pain, struggled to make ends meet, loved her husband until her death and never gave up.  I would hope that some of that stuff has rubbed off on me.

When I feel that way, I know it’s just another of the devil’s tricks to get me in his clutches.  He can turn any situation to his purpose.  We therefore have to be on guard at every moment.

Jesus told His followers that worry gets you nowhere.  When he talked of the lilies of the field in all their glory, He was demonstrating how God cares for every part of His creation.  If He clothes those flowers with delicate beauty and nourishes them, how much more will He care for us.

So, on those days when I need to be rescued from the rushing water of anxiety, restlessness and trouble, I must turn to the rock of my salvation and just shut up.

GROUNDHOG DAY ALL OVER AGAIN

Punxsutawney Phil did it again.  He saw his shadow and therefore there will be six more weeks of winter.  This year has been brutal for most of the nation as far as winter is concerned.  Even in Florida temperatures are in the 50s rather than the usual humidly, hot 90s.  For us in Minnesota, six more weeks of winter is a given. We all know that February is just an extension of January, and we won’t see green grass again until May.  We’ve grown accustomed to the cold temperatures in my state.

It’s funny that our country relies on the weather prediction of a wooly mammal.  I guess it’s wishful thinking for most folks.  But many would much rather see one of those groundhogs mounted and hanging in some dingy pool hall. Poor little groundhog.  He really has no say in the matter.  Whether or not he comes out and sees his shadow is not going to determine the fate of the next six weeks any more than if I were to claim I was 20 years old.

When Bill Murray appeared in the movie, “Ground Hog Day,” we were all exposed to deja vous all over again and again.  The character he portrayed couldn’t get out of the rut he was in.  I guess we all have that kind of experience at one time or another.  We feel stuck in our daily existence.  We feel trapped by our circumstances.  We even feel that there is no hope for anything new under the sun.  Fortunately, we have a God that’s in charge of that very reality.  He knows the plans He’s already designed for each person living on this planet.  Because of that we can be assured that our future is in good hands.

Instead of putting our faith in a furry little fuzz ball, trust in the Creator of all things.  He will turn the frigid days of winter into spring and use the melting snow to nourish the thirsty ground.  He controls the weather, the environment, the climate and all things pertaining to His creation.

WHAT WILL HEAVEN BE LIKE?

Hope through a gate in heaven.

I often wonder what it will be like in heaven. Will we be floating around on clouds and playing harps, or will we be doing the things that we love the most? I can imagine writing spectacular plays with a cast of thousands and having Paul making wondrous sets with amazing paintings and special effects. The cool thing about that is that I won’t have to make the costumes. They’ll be right there. I won’t have to worry about people forgetting lines or staying in character because it will be perfect. What a blast that will be. Can’t wait!

POETRY BY KATHY BOECHER©

The world is changing every day and we just string along?

We follow like a herd of sheep who can’t tell right from wrong,

We listen to the experts, believing every word,

We think they know what’s best for us, but still our thoughts are blurred,

The well-known politicians do naught but rant and rave,

But they’re no better the rest, their words will never save,

We listen to the media, we listen to our boss.

We follow their direction, but still we will get lost,

We trust that all will tell the truth, our faith will quickly fade,

There will be broken promises, and none can make the grade,

Where do we turn when all seems lost, when things just don’t make sense,

There’s only One we can believe to give full recompense,

He has a perfect plan for us, designed by Him alone,

He gave His life and died for us – all evil to atone,

Our lives on earth will falter, we’ll stumble all the way,

But Jesus rose to give us life and see another day.

ARE YOU AT THE END OF YOUR ROPE?

The 1970’s were turbulent times for our country. We were still reeling from the Vietnam War; we had a President and Vice President who resigned from office rather than face impeachment.  there was a huge movement to get better salaries for women and more jobs in the workplace; and there was a continuation of the sexual revolution that started in the ‘60s.

The average salary was about $23,000 a year and the price of the average home was $26,000. Unemployment was at 3.5%, eggs were 62 cents a dozen and you could buy regular gas for 36 cents a gallon. Times, prices, politics and morals change over time.  Some people believe this is all part of our evolutionary process.  I wonder if you might instead call it a devolving of sorts.  As our time on planet earth pushes on, we have seen so many changes, reforms, reinventing, reversals, revisions and still we come to the same truth.  This world isn’t getting any better.  In fact, as King Solomon once said, “I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

Out of the nineteen seventies, there came some great music including lyrics written by Carole King in the song, “You’ve Got a Friend.”

“When you’re down and troubled and you need a helping hand and nothing, nothing is going right. Close your eyes and think of me and soon I will be there to brighten up even your darkest night. You just call out my name and you know wherever I am, I’ll come running to see you again. Winter, spring, summer or fall all you have to do is call and I’ll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah, you’ve got a friend.”

When we feel pain or sadness; when nothing is going the way we planned; when we feel totally lost or out of control; we have a friend. Our friend is Jesus and I know we can count on Him to bring light to a dark existence. Times change, but our God remains the same. Through the centuries of time, there will be innovation, but there really is nothing new.  It’s all been done and said before.  Still, God remains the same.  He is steadfast.  He won’t leave us when we’re in trouble. He is our protector and defender.  He loves us unconditionally and the truth of His heavenly home is waiting for us.  What a friend we have in Jesus.

HEALING IN LAUGHTER

A child’s laughter is one of the sweetest sounds in the world.  Laughter from an elderly person with no teeth can be just as gratifying.  Laughter can also indicate embarrassment, frustration or even panic.  Laughter can trigger all kinds of emotions, but one thing is for sure – it usually makes you feel good.

I grew up in a family where laughter was a necessity.  We didn’t have much of monetary value.  We moved often.  My dad was the only guy in the house and suffered with many of his own demons, but enjoyed a good belly laugh or two – usually after consuming several beers.  My mom suffered from many health issues.  I truly believe that had we not maintained a good sense of humor, we would all have succumbed to deep depression.

Joy and laughter actually create a feeling of well being and good health.  That might not mean much when your body is burning with pain. It’s not necessarily smart to joke with someone who is on their deathbed, but it has been known to help.

Some folks I know wear a permanent frown.  Some have become defeated by the ugliness of the world.  I’ve seen anxiety and worry place a mask of tragedy on a person’s countenance.  Even the seemingly happiest people in the world may be victims of a lack of true joy in their lives. Their spirit has become crushed and is destroying them internally.

I’m not suggesting we walk around with a fake smile on our face, but when we realize the gift we have received from God, our hearts are not only grateful, but our lives will take on new meaning as well.

Proverbs 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

THE HANDS OF MY SAVIOR

I often think about the hands that reached up to his mother from the manger. Those tiny, dimpled hands were perfectly formed by His Father before His birth. As He grew, those little boy hands undoubtedly got scuffed and bruised just like any other human boy. As He learned His earthly father’s trade, His hands would ache and become blistered after a day of shaping a piece of wood. When He later began His ministry, His hands touched people and they were healed. He placed His hands on them and evil spirits were drawn out of them. When He entered the temple and saw how corrupt it had become, those same strong hands turned over the tables of those who had distorted His teachings and turned it into a den of thieves.

In Gethsemane, I can imagine His hands clasped tightly in prayer, pleading for mercy. His knuckles turned white as He prayed for His people – praying that this cup of death would pass from His lips.  When the vigilante crowd appeared, under the direction of one of His own trusted disciples, Judas, He used His powerful hands to heal Malchus who had lost his ear by Peter’s sword.  They then bound those healing hands and led Him to a court of frightened men who felt their church was in jeopardy because of this man.

His was led to the cross. His blood-spattered hands carried His own instrument of death to Golgotha.  The soldiers cut through His hands with long, iron spikes, pinning Him to the cross. His hands lifted up to God that day and He died there for you and me, but that wasn’t the end for my Savior. He rose again three days later and proved that He is God, but even then, He had to prove to His disciple, Thomas, that He indeed bore the scars of His bitter death.

Help us, Lord to lift our hands up to you in thanksgiving and prayer and be reminded of all that you did to lift us up to heaven with yours.  Amen!

CAN THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH?

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER

Traffic sounds rumble early on a frosty morning.  The crash of box cars echoes from the tracks.  People running here and there with so much to accomplish and so little time.  You become invisible in a sea of bodies rushing – only to scream through the day – tear through traffic to get home again and do it all over tomorrow.

The news is filled with hatred between races, murders, theft, horrendous crimes that only a demented, twisted or broken mind could concoct.  There are stories of sexual deviation, infidelity, promiscuousness.   We hear of hit men being ordered to assassinate – bodies dismembered and left to rot – lack of respect for life at every avenue.

WHERE IS THE PEACE?

Children go to school with thoughts in their minds of being bullied, teased or humiliated.  They struggle to maintain grades so they can go on to college and succeed in the future.  They grow up believing that the only way to get ahead is to put yourself first.  They also enter those school doors wondering if they will be faced with a lockdown or worse.

WHERE IS THE PEACE?

Young men and women are faced with possible sexual harassment, unwanted pregnancies, abortion, depression and anxiety.  The incidence of drug and alcohol use  has become part of their daily existence.  They are constantly pushing to do their best, with no time to enjoy the ride.

WHERE IS THE PEACE?

Wars rage, weather disasters continue, political leaders dictate, government grows, the average man is lost in it all.  Our rulers buy into the games of politics.  Instant news has caused all sense of honesty to take a back burner to hot scoops with no research.  People lose their reputations and lives because of it.

WHERE IS THE PEACE?

Churches offer entertainment today, to increase their membership.   Scandal and abuse has entered the holy walls of Rome and right here at home. The word “sin” has become offensive to most people.  Finding a church that’s a place of healing, consoling, growth and the truth of God’s Word is becoming more and more difficult.  We all like to hear positive things about ourselves, right.  This world, after all, is all about me.

WHERE IS THE PEACE?

When Jesus came as a tiny baby in a smelly barn, surrounded by dirty animals and nothing but a mud floor, He didn’t use His Godly powers.  He came as a human being so He could experience the things we do.  The difference was, He had no sin. His mission was to live, learn, teach, die and save the world from the sting of sin and death through all of it.  His death led to His resurrection and the promise that we too will be raised from death and live eternally with Him in heaven.

He came to live a life of poverty in a insignificant little town from which nothing good ever came.  He worked hard alongside His stepfather as a carpenter.  He knew about agriculture, animals, planting and often used that knowledge to teach others about His Father’s kingdom.  He also knew the scriptures, because He wrote them.  He could do miracles, but they weren’t His primary purpose.  He came to carry the sin of the world upon His shoulders – to suffer extreme torture – die the death of a criminal and be humiliated before men.

WHERE IS THE PEACE?

The peace lay in that makeshift crib on the night of His birth. The heavenly hosts announced it to the shepherds who came to see Him. This was the promised Messiah they had waited for so long.  The peace is that little, helpless babe, nursing at His mother’s breast.  As many mothers will tell you, there is nothing like looking into the eyes of a newborn.  That baby would bring peace to the world.  All of His life is an example of how we should live and serve others.

He’s coming again to take all believers to heaven and condemn those who don’t.  I think we’re all ready for peace on earth.

THERE IS THE PEACE!

A QUIET, YET POWERFUL, SUPER HERO

With the Super Bowl right around the corner and the Winter Olympics taking up time on the other channels, we are being inundated with superheroes of all kinds.  We put our hopes and sometimes our treasure into counting on their strength and vigor to win the prize. Soon that prize will be forgotten, and the medals and trophies and rings will take a backseat to reality.  Those we place on pedestals are often set up for an eventual fall.

Our true Hero is less ostentatious.  He can’t be seen, except in the creation around us.  He can only be heard in the wind as His breath rustles through the trees.  We cannot touch Him, but we can be sure of His presence in every aspect of our lives.  He’s with us during the difficulties we face – the disappointments – the trials – the sickness – the good times as well as the bad.  He is kind and gentle, yet the power of His Word is invincible.  He is not a blue genie who will grant our every wish, but He does hear our prayers and answers them according to what He thinks is for our best.  We have Him available at a moment’s notice.  He loves us more than we love ourselves.  He never changes and He gave the ultimate gift to us for our place in heaven.  His name is Jesus, my Savior and King.  That’s what I call a real Superhero.

Do we place upon a pedestal the heroes of our time?
We sometimes make them idols. Do we think they are divine?
When they show that they are human, they quickly tumble down.
They lose that place of honor. They no more wear a crown.

They thought they were invincible – that they could do no wrong.
They took the road most travelled – they sang their own sweet song.
The accolades enticed them. Their greed did overcome.
They tested all the limits. To their pride they would succumb.

The only superhero that fills our every need,
Is Jesus, Christ our Savior. For our souls His wounds did bleed.
He gave His life to save us – from sin to set us free.
He conquered death to give us life for all eternity.

The superstars and champions may give us all a thrill,
But the Son of God won’t let us down. Our every need he’ll fill.
So look to Him for lasting peace. The victory he has won.
He is our true redeemer- role model – Number One!

READY, GET SET . . .

My eyes open to the first morning light.

My mind fills with many thoughts, yet the chaos within is a driving force,

Pulling me to give up before I even start..

A new day, filled with obstacles, detours, roadblocks.

A new week, with new beginnings, old worries, empty wishes.

If only I could cast off the worries of yesterday – the reminders of past mistakes –

The desires for the future and the wandering into unknown territory.

Looking at things beyond my control is not an easy task.

Only God can see the future and what’s in store for me.

With that assurance I can look forward rather than back,

Because I know He is in control.

I’M SORRY – AGAIN

Almost every human being who has had children will look at this picture and melt. I recall many situations when one of my children felt sincere remorse for a wrongdoing and came to ask for forgiveness.  How can you turn away from that?  How can you not be forgiving?  Unfortunately, we are not all forgiving.  Only God can do that perfectly.  Only He knows the cost of redemption. Still, we are His children – His creation – He loves us unconditionally.  This is a love we neither deserve nor can we earn by anything we do.

Grace and forgiveness go hand in hand.  They are the gifts God doles out to those who place their trust in Him – those who come with true sadness in their hearts and minds for the wrongs they’ve done – those who truly repent and ask for God’s cleansing.

I’m sorry, God.  How many times I’ve said that during my life.  I often wonder if He gets tired of hearing those words.  After a while you’d think He’d give up on us, but He doesn’t.  Like a loving parent, He is always available.  Our forgiveness is guaranteed.  It was won for us at the cross of Calvary, where His only Son took the weight of every sin and gave His life as payment for our redemption.  He then overcame the grave to prove to us that we need have no fear of death, because we will also rise to heaven.

As each year passes, I can’t help but be amazed by this grace – this perfect reaction from my Father, God. Even during difficult times, I am confident that He’s in control. There are days when I pray for heaven to come quickly, but I know that God isn’t finished with me yet.  I pray that he will use me to show others what a gracious God He is.

The world is not the place for me.  I long to be in heaven.
When thoughts like that invade my mind, I need to be forgiven.
God didn’t make me to want death.  He chose me as His own.
He crafted me and knew me before my life was sewn.
Each intricate piece he whittled.  Each vessel put in place.
He had a plan set just for me.  He knew the dreams I’d chase.
And even as my days grow short, and time is running out,
I feel His presence in my life.  Of this I have no doubt.
To live for me is Jesus, no matter where I roam.
I will rejoice to meet Him when He comes to take me home.

HOW STRONG ARE YOU?

ISAIAH 41:10 ESV  “fear not, for I am with you;
    be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

The Winter Olympics are officially underway.  As usual strength is the common denominator for all the athletes.  Will they be able to stand up to the competition?  Will they fall victim to fatigue, mental anxiety, fear?  Or will they triumph over their fellow athletes and excel by winning a coveted piece of metal?

As we go through life our strength is being tested by the minute.  How much more of this COVID virus can we endure?  How will we face the illness if we get it? How can we withstand the isolation and see hope in an unknown future?  Will we ever pass the tests placed before us?  Can we overcome the fear and anger that daily fills our world? Can we overcome grief when it comes?  How can we make it through another day without fearing death?

Those questions are real and raw.  They touch each one of us at some time or another.  They cause us to lose hope and put fear into our hearts.  So where is our hope?  Where can we go to find comfort and strength to carry on?  In the Bible verse above, God clearly tells us that He isn’t going to give us more than we can bear.  He will give us the strength to withstand anything, because He is God.  He is omnipotent and He has already determined our destiny.

You are strong, because God is.

He is your power source.

He will never lead you into a situation that you can’t handle.

Even your death isn’t the end of life.

Trust in Him.  Put your faith and hope in Him.

He created you to be unique and different than anyone else on this planet.

He knows the path you will take.

He loves you unconditionally and with Him you are more than a winner.

His plans are always for your good.

He will provide answers when you need them.

He is your God, your Brother, your Redeemer, your Friend!

MAKING WAVES

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

In life we have a quiet voice, that whispers more than screams,

We open up our mouths to speak, our thoughts, our hopes, our dreams,

We take the easy path it seems, when push turns into shove,

We’re stifled by the maddening crowd, when we exhibit love.

The trail we leave behind in death, will fade like ripples do,

Eventually our memory, will be forgotten too,

But while we walk upon this orb we still have time to give,

To open up our arms and hearts, to love, be loved and live.

Like waves our lives will come and go, they rise and then they fall,

They only last for a brief time, but we can fill them all,

With never ending promises which always are fulfilled.

God’s truth and understanding, His blood for us was spilled.

Our lasting heritage will be, not what we did in life,

But how God lived within our hearts and carried us through strife,

How He alone has shown the way, to heaven’s brilliant light,

And gave to us a legacy, to share from dawn to night.

RESTING IN GOD’S WARMTH

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER

The glory of God’s majesty spilled through my window this morning,
Is it a foreshadowing of good things to come?
Alone I sit in its warmth
Wrapped in its glistening light,
Soaking in the rays of heaven,
Feeling God’s presence,
Delighting in His perfection,
There is nothing like looking beyond the snow,
The ice,
The crystallized frost which coats the windows,
Into the depth of God’s warmth,
His comfort,
His strong yet gentle arms,
I rest in the knowledge that even though the thermometer registers below zero,
My heart is warmed by the heat of God’s sun drops,
