HOLD TIGHT

I love old Christmas movies. They stir up all kinds of wonderful feelings and memories. One special one that comes to mind is “A Christmas Story.”

I think it really hits home because it takes place in the town where I grew up and I can relate to a lot of the situations; for example having our holiday meal in a Chinese restaurant; going to see Santa at the mall and getting rushed through before you can itemize your wish list; having the turkey fall to the floor before it can be served; getting just the right tree and trying to decorate it to dad’s perfecting eye.

There was one thing that happened to a little boy when he was double dog dared to put his tongue on a cold metal pole. Well, apparently that kid didn’t know that he would stick fast to that pole for a very long time.

When God invites us to stick to Him, we know that it will be a good thing. We may still have struggles in our lives and there certainly will be pain and sorrow, but we can be sure that He won’t let us go.

What a comfort that is for those of us who can’t make it through life alone. Stick tight to Him and He will cling to us with a strength we can’t begin to understand.

SAVING LIGHT

A light streams through resistant clouds. It brings a glimpse of heaven,
As once in darkness bathed in shrouds, it’s filled with hope once given.

The light came forth in darkness, so many years ago.

And shone upon the Son of God, in humble manger low.

He could have come in glory, with angels at His side,
Humility He chose instead,  when with us He’d abide.

Oh, sweet and loving Jesus. You came to give us life.
You promised to be with us in all our earthly strife.
You walked alone to Calvary and hung upon a tree –
You suffered pain and shed your blood. You did it all for me.
You rose from death to give me life, the ransom you did pay

No longer in the grip of sin, I now with sureness pray.

How can I thank you, Jesus, for bringing me Your light?
Use me and let me praise you, through all Your Holy might!

TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY

I love tradition but it doesn’t carry the same punch it used to. Maybe it’s because we want to make new traditions that fit our lifestyle and some of the old ways are nothing more than old-fashioned.
Did you know that the practice of having a Christmas tree was first started in the 16th century? The beautiful fir trees that lined the forests of Germany looked like God had sprinkled glitter all over them. The people often often hung apples on them as a reminder of the Tree of Life. They also added lit candles to depict the Light of the World.

I have memories of going to the woods to cut down a tree. We’d bundle the kids up so they could barely move. We trudged through deep snow and since my husband has an eye for perfection, we had to find just the right tree. He then would take out his axe and begin chopping. This is where the fun began. The kids loved the idea of cutting down a tree each year, but the tradition died after a while. Like many traditions, they simply don’t fit our lifestyle anymore.

I also remember making fresh egg nog for my family during the holidays. It was made from fresh, raw eggs – cream, sugar and nutmeg. Occasionally the adults would add a bit of brandy to spice it up. That doesn’t happen now, because of the danger of salmonella poisoning.

Traditions come and go, but the message of the season should never be clouded by a change in our lifestyle. Jesus came to us at Christmas. He was born of a virgin – conceived by God Himself – became our brother. That isn’t tradition. It’s a fact and one that will never change.

As we prepare for the advent season, let’s take time to look at some of the old-fashioned traditions, but not forget the One that never goes out of style – JESUS!

CHRISTMAS ANGELS

Isn’t it great to know that God has sent His own angels to protect us each day? I have spoken about my angels and the shape they must be in by now. I have given all of them a run for their money. God knows that I need legions of them to help me.
In the movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” we are introduced to George Bailey’s guardian angel, Clarence Odbody who is in the process of earning his wings. This lovely, tear jerking movie explores what life would have been without George in it.

Have you ever wondered if the world would be a better place without you? I think at some point each one of us may have asked ourselves that question. God has the answer. He created each one of us for a purpose. He talks about this in Jeremiah 29:11 –

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

As we approach the holiday season, I think we need to revisit that very thought. Why were we born – what does God have in store for our future – where does our hope lie? Isn’t it a great comfort to know that He is in charge. He has our entire existence planned out for us. He formed us in our mother’s womb and knew us before we were born.

Maybe we need to think more in terms of this. What would life be without Jesus in it?

Thank you, Lord, for your gift of life. Thank you for watching over me in times of great difficulty as well as times of joy. Thank you for Your Son, Jesus, who came to carry my sins to the cross and forgive me, even though I don’t deserve it. Amen!

A LITTLE THANKSGIVING HUMOR

JUDGMENT IS COMING

Judgment Day is coming! It will be a day when every skeleton falls out of our proverbial closet; a day when all our secrets sins will be revealed; a day of fear and trembling – if we are not in tune with our Judge.

When I was a kid, I had this vision of God, the Father as one with fiery eyes, a fierce scowl on His face, pointing His accusing finger directly at me; ready to sentence me to the fiery pit of hell.

We should be afraid of His judgment. If it was up to us, we wouldn’t have a chance. All sin is equal in His sight and all of it deserves eternal punishment – from the evil thoughts we have to the murderous, slanderous, selfish, immoral, malicious deeds we perform in our lifetimes. God doesn’t measure our disobedience.

All sin is the same to Him and sin deserves death. That horrific judge, sitting on His throne of justice, demands perfection. Because He knows we can’t do this alone, He provides a way out of our eternal prison.

He sent His only Son to take our place. His precious blood was shed for the washing of our filthy souls.

Now we can stand clean of all sin, before the throne of God and know that we have his everlasting forgiveness. “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The good news in a nutshell.

CITY OF LIGHT

14523140_10202051934296959_477288935128394360_n-2

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER© City of Babylon painted as part of a set for the musical play “SUCH A TIME AS THIS”, the story of Esther

A mysterious land offset by magnificent domed buildings,

Coursing through a land of unbelief and lasciviousness,

God’s people again in captivity,

Torn from their homeland,

Servants in an unknown land,

A star rises,

Hadassah her name,

A child of Israel,

The one who would bring freedom to her people,

Her influence and beauty would put her in a powerful position,

Yet, she remained patient, faithful to her people yet bold,

An example of Godliness without His name once spoken.

HISTORY LESSONS

history_channel_logo__140523153130

I’ve been spending a lot of time watching the history channel lately, mainly because most of what is on the tube is disgusting, immoral, disturbing and far from entertaining. I kind of wonder why I didn’t like history in school, because there is so much to learn from our past.

For example, a series on the men who built America focused on the richest men of that time. Without the resources of these men and their ability to look outside the box, America would be just another third world nation. Today, men like these are often looked upon as greedy, selfish and tyrannical, but there is no denying the contribution they made to our own history.

Railroads spread across our country, allowing for transportation of goods. Bridges were built with steel forged by laborers who were paid by those same models of industry. Tunnels were carved through mountains, allowing for ease of transit.

Inventions, which would change the course of life as it was known, were produced at rapid speed. A lot has changed over the course of history. Many a man has “evolved” from a self-sufficient creature into one who is entirely dependent on others or things to make his life easier; but is it really for the better?

There are tons of examples in God’s holy word of men, women and children who changed the course of history. These were average guys, kings and queens, and the very poor. Using this wonderful book as a guide can keep history moving in the right direction and us on the path to heaven. Let us never forget where we came from, because it is sure to lead us to where we will end up.

ARE WE WHAT WE DO?

84275d1f13bbf5d09595ef4ba9a8e24b

“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.” Benjamin Franklin

achievement – noun – something that has been done or achieved through effort : a result of hard work

Are we shortchanging our children, by giving them participation awards?  Sure it’s nice to have something in hand to show you’ve achieved something, but isn’t it also nice to know that you have gone over and above the average?  If we have nothing to work towards, chances are we won’t work.  Eventually, we will become like everyone else, classified as non-achievers.
Sometimes it just feels comfortable to go along with the flow -to conform – to fit in.  We become complacent about working hard, because the reward will be the same as if we didn’t.  Has our society become this way?
How many have actually done something extraordinary to set themselves apart from others.  Certainly participation is important – for without it, how will you know you can accomplish great things through it  For example, a dancer can participate in a competition, but if she doesn’t train for it, or work hard to be better than her competitor, she hasn’t achieved anything.  An athlete can participate in an event, but if his desire to win isn’t there, chances are he won’t.
I think it’s important to give our young people someone to look up to – those who have achieved exceptional results because they worked hard for them.  Our current entertainers are often a flash in the pan, but they stretch the limit when it comes to behavior.  Our athletes have instant fame and fortune, but their careers often tank because they are captivated by success and forget how they got there.  Our leaders are often full of pompous promises which they never will keep.  Where do we turn to find good role models?
It’s never a good idea to trust in our fellow human beings in this quest.  Everyone falls short of true success. There is only One.  He left all His glory behind to do the necessary work to accomplish the goal of salvation for the world.  In gratitude for this, we need to set Him up as our only hero – our example of how to live.

TEN REASONS TO BE THANKFUL

thl9nyt0ot

Americans will soon sit down to a sumptuous dinner and feast on foods served only on special occasions.  As we fill our tummies with goodies, let’s try to focus on those who don’t have such bounty.

Maybe you are faced with an empty table – there is no extra money for special treats – the cupboard is bare.  You may have been outcast or don’t fit in.  You might be a victim of abuse  and every dinner table is another opportunity for vile words to be vaulted in your direction.  You may be wondering if you will have a job tomorrow – if your spouse will ever return – if you’ll ever see your children again.  You might have just received news that you have a terminal disease.

God tells us to be so in all circumstances.  He expects and deserves our thanks.  God’s love for us is more than abundant.  You cannot measure it – you can’t always see it – it is beyond human comprehension.

Here are a few examples of His love:

  • He created us in His image.
  • He doesn’t make junk.
  • He loves us as a perfect Father.
  • He provides for all our physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
  • He helps us through every problem in life.
  • He loves us even though we don’t always return His love.
  • He provided an end to our sinful condition.
  • He sent His own flesh and blood to take our place and carry the burden of our sin to the cross.
  • He is always available to hear our prayers.
  • He overcame death – as will we when we join Him in eternity.

As we prepare for this special day, share this good news with just one person.  By doing so, we are thanking Him for all He has done for us.

THE HUNT BEGINS

559555_1990784906335_1849938983_n

ORIGINAL ART & INSPIRATION FROM PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

Within the glorious display of autumn,

Brilliant yet dusky colors of gold and mauve,

The untouched country side filled with still green valleys,

Amidst the waters blue they lay,

The grand antlered beasts, docile yet free to roam at will,

Filling their bellies with forage, carefree and searching for a mate,

Their fate is sealed,

The days have come,

When emboldened hunters trek through swamps, muck and cat tails,

When the stillness of nature is broken with the sound of a gun,

Death comes quickly,

Or maybe not,

The adrenaline pumps,

Telling the brain that this is the hunt,

A time of extreme excitement,

Maybe a deer will die today,

Or maybe not,

The hunt isn’t all about death,

It’s a time for hunters to bond in the glorious abundance of God’s creation,

A time of escape from the every day,

A time to renew old friendships,

A time for life.

AGING

img_0288

ART & INSPIRATION FROM PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

The shadows of time have crept slowly and insidiously into this old vessel,

Sometimes in dreams I see mansions filled with treasures and beauty beyond belief,

Streets lined with gold and abundance everywhere,

No sorrow, no pain, no loss,

My eyes dim, my body grows weak,

It seems I should be coming close to the end of my days,

In those moments of weakness,

I see that God isn’t finished with me yet,

I wonder what He has planned for me today.

WHAT WILL I BE TODAY?

d45e6dc707c493052c3e910bb36d84f8

“You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream,” C.S. Lewis

Life carries us through ups and downs and turns us inside out sometimes.  We think we have it all figured out and suddenly realize we don’t have a clue.  Our path becomes cluttered with the task of living, giving, receiving and doing.  So often the road is snowed over and we can’t begin to understand where it might take us.  I guess I’m at that stage in my life today.

Looking back has never really been my bag. I’ve always preferred moving ahead to the next phase, but now I’m faced with actual retirement and I wonder what my life will become.  I imagine sitting on a rocking chair, falling asleep with a book in my hands and not waking up.  Is that what I’ll be today?

I imagine being able to travel, to explore new hobbies, to do things that time has not allowed me to do.  I see new horizons – new vistas – new dreams fulfilled.  Is that what I will be today

At the beginning of our journey on this planet, God provides caregivers to love and nurture us along the way.  He guides us through life with relationships, teachers, friends and people who bring out the best in us.  He gives us someone to love.  He sees to it that we find a job and career that means something to you and fulfills others’ needs as well. Suddenly, it comes to a crashing halt.  It’s over.  Is that what I will be today?

I know that God isn’t finished with me yet.  Many of my friends are sick and dying.  Many have lost all hope of seeing the dawn of a new day.  Some have given up and some fight with all their might to stay the course.  Is that what I will be today?

I could dwell on the negative and think that life has come to an end, but I believe a new beginning waits

right around the corner.  I’ve been blessed with an amazing husband.  I still have a few creative ideas in my head.  Maybe I can finish that novel I’ve been working on for the past few years.  Perhaps I can experiment with paint on canvas.  I might even find that I will have more energy, less aches and pains and more to give.

Life doesn’t end when you retire, unless you allow it to.  I’ve been given another chance to live, to care, to share God’s Word with others, and that’s what I will be today.

EARLY THANKSGIVING

funny-thanksgiving-turkey-cartoon2

Psalm 34:1  I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

I’m from the state of Wisconsin and so is my husband.  When we arranged our wedding, it was originally planned for the weekend bow season for deer hunting.  Because my husband would not be able to attend the ceremony on the chosen day, it was rescheduled for the week prior to hunting season.  I should have known then that deer hunting would cause us to celebrate Thanksgiving with each of us in different locations every year.

When I googled the timing of this season, I discovered that hunting the great white-tail deer goes all the way back to the beginnings of the state’s history.  It was an opportunity to gather as families and spend quality time together.  Since Thanksgiving was also such a time, it apparently seemed logical to make them coincide. A very nice sentiment for those with family members that also hunted and wanted to share some of that quality time.

In my husband’s and my history, I learned early that I wouldn’t mess with his hunting traditions. We were on our honeymoon and I promised him that he could go bow hunting for one day.  I tagged along and sat in the car reading a book.  After what seemed an eternity, I grew bored and a little concerned that he hadn’t yet returned. My wild imagination began creating possible scenarios.  Perhaps he had fallen into a pit of quicksand and was clinging to a stray vine.  Perhaps a bear had attacked him and he was lying helpless in the woods.  Maybe he had bagged his deer and was now trying to carry it out by himself. My boredom turned into panic and my first impulse was to sound the horn on the car.

It wasn’t long before he emerged from the forest – without a deer, free of quicksand and unharmed by the piercing claws of said bear. I was soooo relieved to see him in one piece.  He, on the other hand was not happy.  As it happened, he had just pulled back his bow on a 20 or 30 point buck when the horn sounded and the deer escaped to see another day.  That event could’ve resulted in an early divorce, but 52 years later we’re still together.

Traditionally, we now celebrate Thanksgiving a week before the actual holiday, so that dad and son can bond and spend quality time with their buddies in a cold, smelly, hunting shack for a week. This year I’ll spend the actual holiday with my daughter and family in their new home in South Carolina.

The cold, smelly, hunting shack has since been built into quite the place, with indoor/outdoor plumbing (don’t ask,) a beautiful stone fireplace, built in bunks, a nice sized kitchen and lots of room for playing cards and spreading out after a tough day in the forest.

Yesterday our family gathered, minus our South Carolina kids, for a day of feasting in our new/old house.  The food was great, the company incredible, and the time together was quality time well spent.  It was a good day.  A day to give thanks – which should really be devoted to every day.

HAPPY EARLY THANKSGIVING!

YOUNG HEROES

15027510_10202219564767616_6633117790586195110_n.jpg

This week has been focused on a controversial election, protests, transfer of power and other things that annoy and agitate many.  Some can’t accept the results.  Some say, let it go.  Some are angry, some violent, some are being paid to encourage these vigilante events.  It’s enough to make one want to scream and crawl in a hole until the world comes to its senses.

On the other hand, this week we also celebrated Veterans Day.  Every once in a while we dedicate a day to the real heroes of our country – the ones who have answered Jesus’ call to show the greater love He demands – to lay down his life for his friends.  In the midst of all this celebration and the great speeches, there is was again.  More riots, protests and infantile behavior.

Yesterday, I took my team of middle school public speakers to a forensics competition.  These kids vary in abilities and personalities, but they’ve spent the last couple months preparing for something they were dedicated to.  It’s always nice to be at the top of the heap, and our team has placed first for several years now.  I was confident in my kids, but I was a little worried that they might not be able to handle a loss if it occurred.  Here was another set of heroes, in my estimation.  I never would’ve displayed such courage at that age.  I encouraged them to realize that they were winners already.

This whole week has me thinking about a few things.  We all have the right to protest and assemble peacefully according to the constitution.  We have the right to speak words that we believe in without fear of harmful results.  We have the right to worship as we please.  We were given those rights because of the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice to uphold it.

In a way, it all came together this morning in church as the pastor talked about our freedoms as Americans and followers of Christ.  Our children must grow to believe in those rights and stand tall when it comes to defending them. Even the youngest of our people have a voice and many times we underestimate the power of their words.

I pray that the smoke will soon settle and we can come together as a nation putting our differences aside.  If we don’t we will never regain our place as a powerful country.  In the end, our true freedom has been won and we’ve been given the victory if we trust in the King of Kings.

By the way, my team won first place … AGAIN!

DIVERSION

528656_2032195661578_1558816415_n.jpg

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

A day free of anger and hostile aspersion,

The peaceful relief comes in simple diversion,

Turn back to the simple the sweet and the kind,

Release all the wrath that is filling your mind,

Give in to the beauty of all that surrounds,

Enjoy God’s creation where true love abounds,

We can’t change the world, even though we might try,

We can’t stop the bitterness creeping on by,

We can’t make it right, we just don’t how,

The remedy lies in our hearts, don’t you see,

God wants us to love so we can be set free,

He wants us to soar with the eagles on high,

He wants us to live life and not simply die,

He wants what is best for the ones who love Him,

We can’t temper hate if we keep it within,

We need a diversion, a comforting place,

A place of sweet silence to end this rat race.

DESTRUCTION FROM WITHIN

thufhlzt09

“Have no fear of robbers or murderers. They are external dangers, petty dangers. We should fear ourselves. Prejudices are the real robbers; vices the real murderers. The great dangers are within us. Why worry about what threatens our heads or our purses? Let us think instead of what threatens our souls.”
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

As anger rages across our nation and talk of revolution rises, is there any hope for us?  Let us never forget that the internal battle for our souls is ongoing until we die.

Satan lives in the ashes.  His spirit is incendiary.  His thoughts are only of obtaining those who have even the slightest doubt of God’s power over the world. He delights in parched lips and burning flesh. One of the weapons in his tool box is revolution.  By inciting those who disagree and stoking the fires, he can set the world on fire.

Lest we forget, God has dominion over Satan, but his power is real and still alive even within the staunchest of believers.  He uses discord.  He dispenses thoughts of hatred, fear and selfishness.  He is the world’s greatest narcissist, because he has convinced himself that he’s greater than his Creator.

The thought of losing a soul doesn’t seem to carry much clout today.  Many don’t even know what the word “sin” means nor the consequences connected with it.

I grew up in a church that scared the bejeebers out of me by preaching heavily on the law.  It took me a long time to realize the hope of the Gospel, but now I know that God’s law is a necessary element when it comes to our salvation.  Without knowing our sin, we have no need for a Savior.

Today, it’s time to put away our sinful natures and begin to rebuild a dying country.  We need to look within and see what needs to be rectified.  We must stand tall against those who would break her laws and not be afraid to do so.  If we don’t, the devil has won this skirmish and destruction from within has begun.

Our hope remains.  We know that God has already won the victory!

EVERY DAY HEROES

hoh-pic
As we celebrate another Veterans Day, we take time to look up to those who have given a portion of their lives to serve their country.  We’ll hear inspiring words concerning their unselfish and heroic deeds.  Many of them will bow their heads in humility, because they don’t consider themselves to be heroes.

A man or woman who serves his fellow man becomes a real hero, only when he puts them first.  Heroes are everywhere.  We see them on the streets of our cities, breaking up an act of violence.  They’re in the classrooms of schools and universities across the country, standing as guardians and protectors of our children.  They are born out of poverty and necessity.  They rise out of pain and adversity.

Heroes come in all sizes, shapes, colors, creeds and can become brave just by living life.  The fellow, standing in line at the grocery store, as a young mother counts out the last of her change to pay for her purchase, becomes her hero when he offers to pay what she can’t.  A woman who tirelessly cares for her aging mother, by putting her own life on hold, is a hero.  The person who willingly gives up a kidney to save a life is a hero.  Most of these ordinary folks don’t consider themselves any more heroic than the next guy.  Many do these things because they’ve learned from the greatest hero ever to walk the earth.

Today, as we honor those who serve in our military, let’s not forget the everyday heroes – those who put others first – those who humble themselves and serve – those who do things without concern for their own safety or lives – and thank God for them.

THE END!

is

OK it wasn’t the best movie ever, but the title was catchy.  The funniest part about “The End,” was when Burt Reynolds tried to make a deal with God – promising to give Him a certain percentage of his income if God would save his life and then when things began to look better, he lessened the bargain.  I wonder how many folks were praying that way yesterday.

We live in a country where a woman can run for the highest office in the land – where an African American, with little experience in government can hold that same office for eight years – and a billionaire, with no political baggage, can become President of the United States.  Who would’ve thought?

It’s over at last.  All the back biting, rhetoric and name calling can now be put to bed.  We have experienced an exciting and often nerve racking campaign and now the results are in.  The people of America have spoken. What a privilege to know that we still have that right.  It may not always turn out the way we want it to, but we still have a voice.

I sat through the discussions as the polling came in last night.  At last I couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer so I went to bed.  I know there are some broken hearts this morning, but I also know that God still has His hand on America.  No matter who would have won, He is the true victor.

Now it’s time to get back to work and see how much clout our new president really has. Will he deliver on his promises?  Will we see America become a great nation once more?  Will we finally be able to get a good night’s sleep and renew the friendships that have suffered because of this?

Dear, God, thank you for constantly being with the people of America.  We’ve strayed so far from your teachings, just as the children of Israel did in ancient days.  Help us return to you and trust that you have control over this already great nation and that you indeed win in the end.  In Jesus name, I pray. Amen!
