BRIGHT MORNING STAR

lucifer

He was one of the most dazzling of God’s creation. He was called, Lucifer,  the son of the morning; the day star.  He was there at the beginning – he’s been around through history and still exists today.  He has charisma – he’s flashy and intriguing – he has knowledge, power, good looks, but he made one huge mistake – He thought he was better than God.  Because of his disobedience, he was thrown out of heaven and condemned to hell for eternity.  His one goal in life is to get back at God – to take God down at all costs. He also wants to bring us with Lucifer into the fiery furnace of eternal death.

I wonder what was going through his mind during that first Christmas.  He knew Jesus would come someday.  It was all part of God’s promise.  He may have been recalling the words, “He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”  He was then sentenced to a life outside of heaven where he would roam aimlessly.

God didn’t make it easy for him, but the devil still had his groupies – the ones who followed him. They’d become so conditioned to the lies, the disobedience, the battle for souls, that it was a common goal amongst them.  However, they were doomed to the same fate; HELL!  So, because they had no hope, they wanted everyone to suffer along with them. Misery loves company, I guess.

So on that first Christmas, when God’s promise was being fulfilled, can you imagine how Satan and his minions felt.  It was like the good guy coming to wipe out the bad guys.  His first thought must’ve been to get out of town.  He was totally aware of God’s power.

We are a lot like him when it comes to facing up to God.  We often run away and hide from Him.  We don’t want to take responsibility for our actions so we blame someone else.  We think we know better.  It’s a daily battle, isn’t it?

At that simple manger, we see the innocence of the lamb that would someday die for the sins of the world – but we can also be assured that He gained the victory over the devil when He conquered death on Easter morning.  Death and hell have no dominion over us anymore. We need not fear death because we know that God has won the victory.  Because of that victory, we have eternal life through Jesus.  He died so we could live!

OOMPA LOOMPAS

Oompa-Loompa.jpg

I’ve been on a Willy Wonka adventure for the last couple months, which culminated in a marathon of seven performances by two separate casts this past weekend.  They will do the same next week.  Their resilience and buoyancy amazes me.  As I move set pieces, round up children, try to keep them quiet while still having a fun, I realize how out of condition I am.  However, being backstage, in the thick of it, is also exhilarating.

Each one of these young performers has put in hours of rehearsal, learning songs and dances, along with lines and being responsible for scene and costume changes.  Some of them are only six years old.  So what’s an old seventy five year old woman doing in the middle of all this?  What am I – some kind of masochist?

After a short retirement, of about eight months, I found myself floundering and eager to return to one of the things that makes me who I am.  I became involved with a new children’s theater, very close to home as a member of the board of directors.  Now I’m stage managing this delightful rendition of the Willy Wonka story.

I believe our Oompa Loompas are much cuter than those pictured above, but each of ours has their own personality and most of them have great leadership qualities – which can lead to chaos.  In spite of the apparent skirmish to be first, they are slowly learning the importance of teamwork.  There were too many chiefs at first.  By the time the show closes, they will all be friends and anxious to start another project.

The beauty of theater is that it’s the perfect outlet for expression.  You can put on a “mask” for a while, become someone else, build your confidence, increase communication skills and learn how to work on a team to solve problems.  In this world full of instant information and little personal interaction, it also gives them the opportunity to interact with others and make lifelong friends .

I’d really missed that for those eight months of retirement. I guess God gave me those months to regroup – to rethink – to come up with a plan that would fit my current age and passion for doing what I love.  It’s funny how He places opportunities within our reach – how he leads us in the right direction – gives us the free will to make the right choices.

I’ve been singing the Oompa Loompa songs and those critters have made a few appearances in my dreams.  I’ll probably continue to sing these songs for another month, but like those kids – I’ll soon be ready for another project.

Thank you, Lord, for leading me to this new adventure at this point in my life.  You always know where to put me and how to use me.  Im so grateful to have this opportunity. Continue to bless the children as they go on to finish another hard weekend.   Keep them safe and healthy so they can enjoy their moments of bringing joy to others.  Amen!

YOU CAN TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS!

A rerun from 12/10/14 about yet another Christmas Pageant.

I’m one of those old dogs who is constantly learning.  I’ve spent much of my time on earth learning to be patient, but I never seem to get it.

I had another lesson yesterday as my  group of 12 children, all third grade and younger worked on a shortened version of the Christmas story.  Before  rehearsing we talked a little about our  need for a Savior – we talked about sin – they jiggled and fidgeted into their fluffy sheep costumes – they giggled at how they looked- we talked again about how long everyone had waited for Jesus and how they almost gave up – they played with their head coverings and twisted uncomfortably – we talked about patience and how hard it is to wait for Christmas.  One shepherd complained he didn’t have the right costume while another completely dismantled his costume and by the time our talk was over he no longer was wearing it.

My old mind was trying to keep it together, but I was wondering to myself why they don’t close down school for the month of December.  Kids’ minds certainly aren’t focused on learning.

Then it hit me.  My impatience wasn’t allowing me to enjoy the beauty in this.  We all need a Savior no matter what age we are – we have all sinned and don’t deserve to be forgiven, but we have a gracious God who loves us anyway – we are all impatient for Christmas in more ways than one.

So as the angels spoke about getting ready for the Savior with their halos tilted off to one side – and the sheep talked about how much better David’s singing was then their current caretakers – and the shepherds stirred all over the stage instead of pretending to sleep – I had to stop for just a moment and think about how imperfect we all are and how much we really do need Jesus.

Lord, please give me patience – right now!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!

a046c28f256bf2f50b7ca852d1d2a13b

The beautiful woman in the photograph is my mom.  She would’ve been 96 this year, but is now celebrating with the angels in heaven.  She was my hero – a woman who loved to laugh – one who would do anything for you – was a loyal wife, mother and a wonderful hugger.

I wonder what she would think about all that’s going on in the world today.  My mom taught me how to hug – how to love – how to encourage others – how to be a friend.  Today we have to be so careful about showing affection or simple hugs or pats on the back.  Terminology for this kind of thing has turned into sexual harassment in many cases.

I don’t feel bad that I’ve carried on mom’s traditions of laughing and hugging.  Those things can make us happy, loved and encouraged – but I pray they are never done away with because of our definition sexual harassment.  I know my mother would never have understood what’s happened to our world today.  It hasn’t’ been that long since her death, but times have changed so drastically in just a few short years.  We need to put clear definitions to all kinds of behavior now.

Mom was a child of the greatest generation.  She saw the ravages of the Great Depression.   Lived an average life, worked hard and set a great example. She walked to a country school, even in the dead of winter with the wind in her face.  She worked reluctantly on their farm, but when she went to high school she took on a job as a nanny in exchange for her room and board.  She was a city girl at heart, but grew up in the country.  She married the love of her life when she was merely eighteen, had two daughters and was a model wife – even through a near divorce.

She gave me the gift of a tender heart.  She taught me how to persevere and how to live with dignity.  She was beautiful both inside and out and I can’t wait to hug her again!

Happy birthday, Mom!

WINTER HAS ARRIVED

32a8ac44561b1acafcdc2920fc8af91a

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

The sun sprinkles a handful of fairy dust upon forming icicles. Each one hangs on for dear life hoping that tomorrow the thermometer allows them to dwindle a bit, but in reality, each day only adds to their girth. That solar disk will return to full strength and eliminate them altogether. Still we accept our circumstances, knowing that every season will present itself at just the right time

Icy winds push glistening remnants of this week’s snow across roads and fields.  The mercury in the thermometer longs to rise. Time passes slowly as the skeletal branches of trees have given up the memory of the tender touch of rain and the warm sun.  Now it is replaced with thoughts of shriveling up and dying.

Thus it is in the winter of life, but for those who have not yet given up the battle, the war wages on. Soon it will be replaced with green pastures, fields of gold and perfect temperatures. What shall we complain about then?

WINTER’S GLORY

31d4219238ed0075470b6fd687bf601b.jpg

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

A clump of stately birch trees,

Caressing the frigid landscape,

Creating a barrier from the elements,

A hiding place for those who need shelter,

A place to bask in winter’s glory,

Reaching to heaven,

As hands praying,

These wondrous trees,

Have seen much,

Have heard many things,

Yet their voices remain silent,

Unlike the Creator who placed them there,

Who speaks to us through nature,

And His Holy Word.

BEAUTY IN MONOTONY

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

Reflections of a monochromatic scene,

Dipped in a wash of azure blue,

A magical fantasy,

Enriched with mystical elements,

Still some semblance of reality,

Life can be the same some days,

Boring, without color or substance,

We try to embrace it, but it slips away,

Seems empty,

Without ambition,

No purpose, no goals,

Only a monotonous wash of sameness,

Waiting for the coming explosion of color.

FUNNY MEMORIES

crambone

As I unpacked those treasured ornaments from the past 53 years of marriage, memories began to pour into my head.  There were the handmade pieces; the delicate globes decorated with the names of each in our family; the store bought ones which have seen better days; the bright and shiny newer ones.  Each one of them has a special meaning.  One survivor is a hillbillie, white bearded, red nosed, guitar playing fellow referred to as “Crambone”.  The name bestowed when he entered our home.

All the time consumed on the handmade ones, reminded me of a story which unfolded when our youngest daughter was about 8.  She’d brought home an art project to finish for the next day. It was made of bread dough and when it dried completely, she was able to paint it. She was very proud of her work. She put extra effort into making it just perfect. Everyone turned in for the night and the little sculpture sat unconcerned on the kitchen counter.

It was one of those nights when I semi-woke up and wandered aimlessly into the kitchen. I wasn’t fully conscious. This wasn’t unusual since I was often found sleep walking. The house was dark. There wasn’t a sound to be heard except the growling coming from my stomach. Even though I was in a dream state, I felt the pangs of hunger.

My hands reached out in the darkness and landed on the dog art. Slowly I lifted the innocent victim to my lips. I opened my mouth and my eyes. It looked like dark chocolate, but it didn’t smell like it. It didn’t smell like anything. My pearly whites wrapped themselves around the morsel and bit down.

It was one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever tasted. I immediately woke up, spit the tidbit into the garbage, rinsed my mouth out with water and went back to bed.

The next morning I was sharply awakened by screams coming from my youngest child. I ran to see what happened and there she was with the decapitated dog in her hand.  I had a hard time explaining the truth to my family and to her teacher that I had eaten her homework, but looking back, it was one of those funny things I was talking about.

This event took place about 35 years ago. But we still laugh about it. Finding humor in unlikely situations can make you look like a real idiot or it can help you keep your sanity.

WINTER WONDERLAND

th81PRIX9T

Last night as I went to rehearsal for an upcoming performance of “Willie Wonka,” the temperature was around 53 degrees.  A little rain fell during the day so the roads were wet, but it felt almost tropical for Minnesota.  During the short few hours, snow started falling and the rain turned to ice.  Brisk winds picked up.   On the ride home, I could see the precipitation falling.  It covered the remnants of autumn and cloaked the mulch with a starry like fantasy glow.  Snow has a way of covering up the ugliness of life – even when it’s only temporary.

As a child, I remember running outside after the first snowfall and laying down in it.  Arms and legs flailed up and down as I made fantastic snow angels.  Then we’d pack the snow and roll it across the expanse of what used to be our lawn, and made a snowman.  Snowball fights would follow and then creating a snow fort.

When you’re a child, the memories of past snowfalls are filled with fun and excitement.  When you’re an adult and your body is basically falling apart, snow is anything but fun. It means getting out the shovel or snow blower – letting that brisk air freeze-dry your already wrinkled skin – feeling every bone in your body aching and screaming for relief.  Not to mention driving icy roads and praying you’ll make it safely to your destination.

Somewhere between adolescence and adulthood, we lose the joy that involves snow.  It’s really sad, but unfortunately we must face the responsibility of growing up.  Still wouldn’t it be fun to run outside and make snow angels again?  So what if I’m 75.  I might just do it!  Well, I could do it if I wanted to, but what happens if I can’t get up.  I’d be stuck in the icy mass for six months – frozen in time – a giant ice block with eyes.  Maybe I’ll just put that on my bucket list.

LESSONS LEARNED?

5538d278e49a43438283b22a0a821682

ART & POETRY BY PAUL T.  & KATHY BOECHER©

The tempestuous waters pushed up from the earth and gushed forth,

The skies opened at the direction of God’s voice and poured upon a once rainless earth,

Cutting a path of destruction – severing trees – washing clean all the ugliness –

Only the faithful remained – a family of eight survived along with two of every species,

The rage of God could be tested no more,

But even in His anger, He created beauty from destruction,

The sound of His voice carved canyons out of granite,

Waters laid to rest in  lakes and rivers,

Mountains laid low as valleys rose up to meet them,

When the deluge subsided, the Master Architect had once again created a new world,

His work could not be destroyed,

His love endures forever,

Man’s disobedience continues to corrupt the world today,

Did we learn nothing from the past?

AN UNEXPECTED PREGNANCY

maryBabyJesus

POETRY BY KATHY BOECHER©

You came to a world filled with darkness and sin,

You loved us devoutly without and within,

His love conquered all through a child meek and small,

Dear, God, Your Son came and He died for us all.

You took away sadness and filled us with peace,

You give us a hope that defies life’s surcease.

You gave Your life for us so we could be free.

Sweet Jesus, Your blood you did shed on the tree.

Your body lay lifeless, on that dreadful day,

To conquer the devil – our ransom to pay,

So now we look forward to that special time,

When we will live with You in heaven sublime,

Come quickly Lord, Jesus, and carry us home,

Remove all the darkness, bring light where we roam,

Be with us forever and love us each day,

Sweet Jesus, I love you, what more can I say?
