BECOMING YOUR PARENT’S PARENT

take-care-of-your-parents-15-728

The parenting role never changes. Once you become one, you are one for life. As your children grow and start new lives, they may be gone, but not forgotten. Their safety, their freedom from problems and worry, their joys and sorrows still remain a part of you. Sometimes, as we age, we become more of a part of them than they wish us to be.

Both my husband’s mother and mine needed a place to live for a while in their aging years.  Each was alone – somewhat helpless – unable to care for themselves.  They weren’t ready for a nursing home, but each had their own special issues to deal with and they were not to be dealt with alone.

It’s not easy to become your parent’s parent. For one thing, it’s like raising another child and the parent you remembered when you were a child is not the same. Now you’re doing the reprimanding; the encouraging; the guiding. When the time comes, I know that my family will handle our aging with some frustration as well as joy.

My husband’s mother lost her husband at the age of 56 and she was left with the care of her mother in law, along with dissolving a funeral business her husband and brother had established many years before.  The entire process was extremely stressful, and this sweet lady, who had always exhibited some unusual behavior, now became entangled in her mental disease.  She was diagnosed as psychotic schizophrenic and began a heavy dosage of medication to control it.  We moved her into our home when our kids were teens.  It was difficult for everyone involved.  As I look back, I could almost feel myself going through a similar situation if I was in her place. She lived with us for a year and eventually moved to a nursing home, where she thrived until her death.

My mother was living in Florida – alone after losing her second husband to death.  She seemed to be doing well, but the fact was she was slowly becoming addicted to prescription drugs.  In doing so, this normally vibrant woman became a shadow of herself and spent most of her time in bed.  My sister packed up all mom’s belongings, sold her car, and paid all her expenses for moving to Minneapolis to live with us.  At that point, we were without any children in the nest and it was the perfect place for her to recover (go through withdrawal.) While going through this she told my husband he needed to move out.  She told me that I was an irresponsible daughter who was depriving her of her freedom.  Eventually, she overcame her dependence on opioids and started to live again – enjoying her great grandchildren, grandchildren and us.  One year later she was able to live independently again until she passed away.

Times change, but allegiance to our parents doesn’t. When things like this happen, we step up to the plate when we can and give back some of what was given to us as children.  Being your parent’s parent isn’t easy, but with God’s help, it can be done.

The older we get, the more we resist change, but I’m certain that will be the case until we die. One thing we can count on to always be the same is our God.  His consistency will get us through all things.

FLYING PENGUINS

38055891_1785678854879914_1918313916891398144_n

“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”
Leonardo da Vinci

I think man has always had an inner desire to fly – to catch the wind under our wings and soar to places unknown. Tonight, the Penguin Project for special needs children will have a chance to do just that. For months now, they’ve been working hard, alongside their mentors, to produce their rendition of “Annie, Jr.” The show contains the songs from the Broadway musical. They’ve practiced choreography to go along with the music. They’ve memorized lines. They’ve learned how to apply makeup. They’ve struggled through the difficulties of tech week – with something new being added each day – like lights, sound, microphones and costume changes. Putting the whole thing together will be realized tonight as they appear before an audience. For those who have gone through tech week, we know how frustrating and difficult that can be. We also know the magic that occurs when you’re face to face with an audience.

All of these kids have been more than amazing during this process. The mentors have given up their summer activities to share their time and talent with those who have never been on stage before. The Penguins are stretching heights they never thought possible to reach. This totally new experience has been great for both mentor and Penguin as they’ve grown together as friends and bonded as co-workers.

Putting on a play requires more than a garage, a few sheets and a lemonade stand. “Let’s put on a show,” is one of those things kids do when they’re growing up. It’s one of the purest forms of expression. It gives the actor a chance to shine, show what they’ve learned, build their self confidence and step outside their boxes. They’re called Penguins for a reason. Penguins, like all of us, can’t fly, but when they’re shown how, they can certainly reach heights unknown.

Good luck and God’s blessings on these kids as they set foot on the stage tonight. It’s been a wonderful journey watching them succeed.

BREATH OF GOD

269267_2852134400794_1188172701_n

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

Fourth in a series of plein aire paintings, painted on window shades.  This one depicts wind.

Life is but a whisper in the scheme of things,

We take our first inhalation of air and begin a journey,

So far we’ve been safely enshrouded within our mother’s womb –

Protected from the elements, encased in a familiar space all our own.

We go through the motions of living day by day – learning, trying,

Building, creating,

Thinking, working,

Striving, winning, losing, dreaming,

Each day passes slowly at first as we wait endlessly,

To pass through those early years,

When we finally get there,

The days begin to proceed at a much faster pace.

Still we push forward,

Sometimes gasping for air,

Sometimes choking on it,

And rarely taking time to enjoy the moment,

When we reach the final act, time has no bearing at all,

It speeds by like the wind and carries us to our final destination,

We rest in the safety of our Savior’s arms,

Secure in the knowledge that we are loved,

Feeling the glory of His loving touch.

Come, Lord, Jesus – come quickly!

FILLED WITH GOLD

515159917fbff7e6c817cbb95d079f12

When we mend something with gold, we’re not only solidifying the base, we’re holding true to the importance of the damaged item.  Such is as it is when you grow old.

I’m in a point in my life where six month checkups are the norm.  I used to think it was so the medical profession could reach into your pockets for one more appointment charge, but I now realize that us elderly survivors need to be examined more often.  The process of aging makes things fall apart at a faster rate.  Within six months, your mind can play all sorts of tricks on you.  You start thinking that a particular pain indicates cancer.  You see your friends dying around you and you believe you’re next.  You really need reassurance that you’re going to make it for the next six months.

I think we live in a society that looks at aging as the final act of life.  Once you’ve achieved success in whatever you chose to do with your life, it’s time to sit back and enjoy yourself.  Most folks are living well into their 80s and 90s and still have it all together, but things happen to us.

We don’t look the same.  Our bodies are sagging in all the wrong places.  Our hair is turning colorless and thin.  Our teeth are not our own.  What we have grown to expect as high energy has deflated into forcing yourself to move.  We watch commercials that promise to take away under eye bags and suck the fat out of bodies and realize we’d need more than a truckload of those things to cover every imperfection.

We’re not as quick on the draw as we once were.  We need a little more time to formulate our ideas, come up with solutions or put a plan into action, but we’re still capable of doing so.  When we’re in the growing up stage of life, we look at every advancement as a success.  When we’re in the aging stage, we don’t garner much applause for our accomplishments.  Were often taken for granted or deemed useless.

As long as these six month check ups reveal that I’m still within the normal range on all my blood work – my blood pressure is right where it should be – my asthma is under control – I should be good for another six months.  By then I will have either thought of many more things that are bothering me or I will be filled with gold.  Knowing what God has in store, makes me confident of the latter.

TUPPERWARE LADY

P1260050

I was a Tupperware lady.  In fact I became a manager of my own unit of salespeople, which gave me use of a company car.  I became one of these “party” girls early in our marriage. Our children still needed daddy time at night and it was a source of extra income for us.  It also gave me a reason to party several times a week.

In those days, Tupperware was sold on the party plan.  Salespeople would take their wares into people’s homes and show them how to use it correctly, getting the most out of the product.  I sold a lot of plastic.  I’d talk about the necessity of storing food in airtight containers, preventing bug infestation and organizing cupboards.  After talking about how many spices should be thrown out shortly after opening, I knew I had them.  I know I must have sold at least 5 sets of seasoning containers at each party.

There was one time, as I was traveling to one of these events, that my old Monte Carlo broke down.  I was in the middle of a bridge when it happened.  Smoke spewed from under the hood and my only choice was to pull over.  This was before cell phones, texting or any of that technology stuff.  I had no way of calling for help.

A kind man eventually stopped and pushed my car to a safer spot. He then offered to take me to where I was going – which was only a few miles away.  Without hesitation, I agreed.  I stuffed my huge Tupperware bag into the back seat of his car and we proceeded to the party.  On the way, he offered to sell me some frozen meat, which he had in his trunk.  Of course, I wasn’t in a position to buy anything at that moment, so I suggested some containers which might work well for keeping the meat fresh.

Every time I think of that truthful story, I wonder how I could’ve been so trusting of a complete stranger.  Was I so naïve to think he was just a good Samaritan?  Didn’t I know about serial killers?  Was I in such a hurry to make a buck, I threw all caution to the wind?  I would answer yes to all of these questions.  As usual, my guardian angel was watching over me all the way.

I made it safely to my site – completed my demonstration – received several orders for seasoning containers – called my husband to come to my aid and a tow truck to pick up my car.  I’m not sure how much money I made that night, but it left me with a story I’ll never forget.

IMAGINE

540959_2852131960733_1504202273_n

Second in the series of plein aire paintings on window shades. This one was to depict “sky.”

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

When I was just a little girl, I’d find great consolation,

Watching clouds drift from space to space, guiding imagination,

I’d see things in those puffy shapes, like elephants or giraffe,

A distant flock of geese would soar, God’s hand would choreograph,

The sky is filled with wondrous things, if we take the time to see,

Lean back and find enjoyment there, where finally you’ll feel free.

COOL, CLEAR, WATER

548852_2852147561123_1746962754_n

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

The paintings I’ll be posting over the next days are the result of a plein aire retreat a few years ago.  The artists were given the task of painting four works of art pertaining to elements of nature, on window shades.

Refreshing,

Clear,

Pure and clean,

Liquid melting,

Falling over rocks,

Tumbling through God’s creation,

Filling all in it’s path,

With contentment,

Sometimes raging,

Other times, gently trickling,

Always on a road to somewhere,

Carved out by the Creator of all things,

Like our lives,

It twists and turns,

Sometimes unstoppable,

Unhinged,

Out of control,

Yet always on a path,

Laid out by God,

Trust His direction,

He will lead you in His way.

I VANT TO BE ALONE

marlena

In the thirties, there was movie actress named Marlene Dietrich whose one most remembered quote was, “I vant to be alone.” I’m not sure if it was a movie quote or something she told the press to get rid of them. It can’t be easy being in the public eye, constantly being photographed and followed.

Miss Dietrich was born in Germany and maintained her German citizenship along with becoming a citizen of the United States.  She was a great humanitarian.  She housed German and French exiles during the War, providing financial support and even advocating their US citizenship.  She came to America after doing silent films in Berlin and became one of the most popular figures of her time.

Even your private moments are not your own when you’re a public figure. Especially now when the media has assumed an in-your-face attitude with anyone of note.  I feel sorry for those who decide to go into politics or any job that puts them under public scrutiny.

We all like our space and our quiet times, even if it’s only a short time in the morning before all the daily activity begins. Those little moments of reflection and peace can make all the difference in how our day goes. Using those occasions of contemplation can refresh us.

Maybe your quiet time is reading a book, or enjoying a walk in God’s creation. Maybe you’re like me and find solace digging in the dirt. Whatever it is, cherish those alone times and take advantage of them.

Help me, Lord, to use the quiet instances in my life to thank and praise you for all the blessings you’ve given me. You are the one who gives complete and perfect peace. Amen!

FEAR NOT!

fear-notWe often tell our children not to be afraid.  We say the same to our spouses, friends, relatives, even those we barely know.  There are so may times we’re told to reach out to someone when we’re troubled or when things get tough.   If only it was that easy.. We face all kinds or trouble from the moment we enter this world.  We come out kicking and screaming and often leave in the same way.  We often need someone other than ourselves to get us through those difficult times.

Within our own little circles, we see friends going through difficulties of all sorts.  Within the confines of our own homes, we may be faced with as much turmoil as we see on the news each day.   Let’s face it.  Things in this world aren’t going to get better, but we can get through them a lot easier if we let go of our fears and trust in the only One who will catch us if we fall.

We might think that the world has gone to hell in a hand basket, but still God tells us not to be afraid.  We will never see perfection in this world, but we can get a glimpse of it by reading about God’s eternal love for His people in His Word to us.

When we trust in those words, we’re going to be able to remain silent in times of distress and turn everything over to God.  This isn’t the act of coward – as the world would tell us.  In fact, depending on the Creator of the Universe makes perfect sense.  He designed it all.  He knows what He’s doing.  He can fix the smallest detail with in a second.  He loves us with an unconditional love that we cannot begin to fathom.  He isn’t going to let us go.

Don’t give up – don’t lose faith – don’t be afraid.  God’s angels spoke those words to the shepherds, to Mary and Joseph and God Himself tells us to do so as well.  We should relax – let go – trust – give in to Him.  He is the only One we can rely on for completeness.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

NO DOUBT

IMG_1672

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

What we see, may not be what we think it is,

A change in color,

The temperature,

The sounds,

The smells,

The tastes,

All things need minute examination,

Before we can decided what is truth,

The beauty of nature can turn sour in an instant,

The glory of a cloudless sky can fill with rage in a second,

What once appeared perfect,

Can become tainted with the darkness of the world,

Spattered with the blood of hatred and indignation,

Our first impressions don’t always tell the truth,

So we must look beyond,

Look forward,

And look back to the past,

Within those things we can determine our future,

With the Creator of all things, we can be sure of it.

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!

white-noise-online

Our house has been pretty free of the morning, noon and evening news for the past month or two.  It’s been a refreshing change.  There’s something about the news that puts us into a bad mood.  There’s so much of it lately, a person could easily be swallowed up by the maddening sounds.

Living near a large metropolitan area, means daily crimes – which have escalated into serious injury and many times death.  Gang activities flourish in this environment.  Corruption is on every level – from government, to business and personal.

I try to tell myself that turning off the white noise is going to make it go away, but it doesn’t.  In fact, I thought moving to a small town outside the city limits would change all that.  I soon discovered that the ugliness of evil isn’t limited to a particular neighborhood.

We can try to run from it – tune it out – ignore it and even believe it doesn’t exist, but it creeps into every facet of life.  The devil is like that.  He sneaks around like a hungry animal, waiting for the kill.  He doesn’t care how long it takes, as long as he wins.  He will use every tool at his disposal to make it happen and is devious enough to make us believe we aren’t doing anything wrong.

Our current world is not much different than it’s been before.  From the day mankind decided to go his own way, through the encouragement of the devil, it’s been a downhill slide.

God still loves his children – in spite of their disobedience, turning backs on Him, thinking themselves to be above God.  In fact He provided the answer to bring them back to His arms. He knew about this plan at the beginning and it was the greatest act of love ever.  He sent His Son to take on the sins of the world.  Through His death, sin would be crushed forever for those who returned to God and asked for forgiveness.

White noise is going to be amazingly loud on judgment day.  The trumpets of heaven will blare.  The King of Glory will return and take an accounting of every life that ever lived.  Will you be ready for His final judgment?  It’s really so simple.  Just tune into His Words to us through the Bible.  Within those pages, lay the promises of an eternity in a new paradise.

SUMMER STROLL

IMG_1669

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

A peaceful walk within the woods, can stir imagination,

The crunch of twigs and unknown things, all adds to this sensation,

A regiment of trees stand tall, and line a peaceful lake,

Enduring every element, the brunt of it they take,

A quiet breeze soon captivates and gives you some relief,

It trembles through each giant tree and tickles every leaf,

When life is filled with hope unknown, when all seems lost and over,

The breath of God is living truth that all our sins He’ll cover,

He fills our lives with confidence, He’ll never let us wander,

He carries us through all our trials, His love He does not squander.

OBSTACLES

IMG_1670

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

When I grow weary from the weight of life,

When every step becomes a heavy strife,

There’s no relief, no respite for my load,

The path is filled with obstacles untold,

Each pothole, crag and deep embedded crack,

Becomes too much for this old, weary back,

But God is there at every twist and turn,

To raise me up when troubles start to churn,

To  take the weight and soften every sting,

To wash away my tears and make me sing,

He’s with me every step that I will go,

Since Jesus loves me, this I surely know!

THOSE DOGGONE WEEDS!

SI Exif

When we lived in our old house, I managed to create a garden of pretty epic proportions on a hill.  It wasn’t just a mound, but a real hill, that almost required mountain boots to climb.  That didn’t deter me.  You see, when we first moved into that house, my husband would cut the grass each week and almost ran the power mower into the street on more than one occasion.  I love my husband and wanted him to hang around for a while, so on Mother’s Day, some 22 years ago, I began my quest.

I started small, with little gardens at the top of the hill.  With my little spade, I worked my way slowly down.  My intention was to fill that space with perennials which would need little care.  The soil was good, but there was a certain amount of clay intermixed, so my spade had to often be replaced by a shovel.  By then I’d carved out a few areas where I could actually stand.

In the process, I encountered some very interesting invasive weeds.  Since I was doing this slowly, I often had to go back and remove the same weeds time after time.  The roots were so long, it was almost impossible to dig them out completely.  Eventually the hill was “finished,” but not without constant attention.  My husband helped me to place boulders and some retaining brick to keep the soil from eroding, but the weeds were a never ending task.

I was about 26 years younger when we bought that house.  I could still maneuver the hill with a fair amount of agility and grace, but often found myself being the neighborhood floor show – as people anticipated my rolling down the hill at one point or another – which I did a few times.

As the years rolled on, my acrobatics weren’t as evident.  I was lucky to get out once a week to pull weeds.  Those persistent little critters just wouldn’t go away by themselves.  Beautiful flowers now existed, but the weeds just wouldn’t give up.  Roots often forked out in different directions and I found myself almost re-digging that hill to get rid of them.

I imagine the devil must be the king of weeds.  After all the Garden of Eden didn’t include any invasive species – except for him.  He weaseled his way into human hearts and separated them from God.  He continues to do so as we see the world becoming more and more corrupt and hateful.

Like weeds, the devil knows how to use the things that get us to doubt God’s power. He makes us feel we’re superior to God.  He goads us into sin and evil.  We can ask God for forgiveness and know that we receive it through His Son, Jesus, but that old evil weed builder keeps on burrowing into our hearts.  That’s why daily repentance is necessary.

Until Jesus returns to earth again, this will be a daily battle, but think of what lies ahead – a paradise where the devil no longer is free to roam – an eternal garden with no weeds – no sin.

MONDAY PRAYER

thKRZIY4OU

Lord, I ask that you become the center of my life. You give me a reason to get up every day. You motivate me in all my comings and goings. You lift and encourage me when I feel I can’t go on. You strengthen my soul with your Holy Spirit and I am washed clean of all my sins through your Son, Jesus. My days on this earth are numbered. If there is one thing that gives meaning to those days it’s you. Stay with me as I trudge along to the end and may my final legacy describe me as your loved child.  Amen!

STRANGE ROCK

Home-share

I sat through one of a series of National Geographic, “One Strange Rock,” last night, in spite of its references to millions and billions of years of evolution theory.  I love the photography of National Geographic and there was nothing else worthwhile on the tube last night.  So I watched.

Sometimes it’s good to have faulty hearing.  I got to enjoy this show without hearing much of the narrative – which I knew would be filled with conjecture and evolution.  As I looked at the magnificent microphotography of each of the life forms, I couldn’t help but see the hand of God and His magnificent design.  Take a look at the picture above and notice all the geometric patterns – the outstanding colors and forms.

Anything that beautiful and useful couldn’t have evolved from a big bang or explosion.  Someone had to be in control of the making of it – someone with the intellect of the universe – one who still holds the earth, moon, stars and all the planets in the palm of His hand.  God is the Creator.  He is the One who formed the seas and all that fill it.  All the magnificence, still to be discovered, was placed there for a reason.  We haven’t even begun to uncover the many different life forms within our world.

When Job was suffering through his many losses, his friends told him it was because of something he’d done to displease God.  In Chapters 38-41 of the book of Job – God talks directly to Job through a whirlwind – describing His connection with every form of life.  Not only did He create it all, He knows everything about it.

Every scientist will tell you that every cause has an effect.  One thing leads to another and I suppose that’s there reasoning when they talk about things evolving. However, the design of every living thing is not by chance.  It had to be created by someone with perfect knowledge of all life functions – how things fit perfectly into geometric, mathematical shapes – engineered by a master – with parts which cannot be duplicated by human minds – One who controls the weather, the changes in our environment, the seeds forming into life within the ground – the gigantic population of different species.  The Creator, God rules His creation with grace and love.

(God speaking to Job, Job 38:4-7)”

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk,
    or who laid its cornerstone,
when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”

RENEW ME, LORD!

10455446_10201072960584488_8060323908523455700_n

ORIGINAL ART & INSPIRATION FROM PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

On the days when I feel useless, when I simply cannot move,

When my heart is full of energy, but I can’t get in the groove,

That’s the time I need my Savior, The King of heaven and earth,

His constant care He gives me and grants to me new birth,

He is the Lion of Judah, the great and mighty one,

He makes my life worth living, each day under the sun,

He arms me with protection, He lifts my heart and soul,

And though I may be weary, my life He does control,

Each day that passes from me, is like the setting sun,

I know that it will rise again, God cannot be outdone.

BRANDING

'So, Bob, we've decided to do some rebranding!'

Branding – it’s a word used a lot these days in the advertising trade. A brand tells people about your company and what it represents.  It can have a positive effect and turn people to buy product or it can be negatively used against you, if it’s not the image you want to convey.

Brands are still used on cattle to identify where they came from and that they carry a stamp of approval. A logo or brand can tell a lot about the product and help to sell it.

People will get tattoos to set themselves apart from others. Even inking can change your identity.  I still wonder what happens to folks that get tattooed once they grow old.  Do they wind up around your waist or ankles along with all the other crepey skin?  Seriously though, when I was young, people with tattoos were often considered unsavory, but today everyone seems to have at least one.

Jesus was also branded. Luke 23:38 says, “There was a written notice above Him which read, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” It was placed there to add to the mockery.  His humiliation wasn’t enough.  He was battered, scorned and nailed to that tree, along with the sin of the world – branded for our sake.

Jesus was King of the Jews but that was just part of His tittle.  He is King of Creation, King of Kings, King of grace, mercy and love. As Christians, we wear that brand and should be letting the fact be known to everyone, who we are. He died so we could live.  He conquered death so that we will live forever in paradise.  In a time when Christianity is getting a bum rap in many parts of the world – it’s time to stand tall and let others know why we’re proud to wear His name. May His brand be placed on our hearts as a constant reminder of what He did for me and identify me as His child.

On my heart imprint Thine image,
Blessed Jesus, King of Grace,
That life’s riches, cares, and pleasures
Have no power Thee to efface.
This the superscription be:
Jesus, crucified for me,
Is my life, my hope’s Foundation,
And my Glory and Salvation.
