FRIENDS ARE FRIENDS FOREVER WHEN THE LORD IS LORD OF THEM

01bca6b56daef80352b4465458b3008e

Many of the members from our first church we joined, when moving to Minnesota, are now pillars of our current church. It’s funny how we can pick up with people from our past and become immediately reattached. Two years ago, we lost three of those original church members to cancer. It’s so bittersweet for the Christian when someone in our church family dies. We know full well, that their suffering has ended and that they have inherited eternal life, but it’s very hard to say goodbye when a fellow Christian passes.

This friend was enjoying his retirement. He was very interested in trying his hand at art. Paul hoped he would have had the opportunity to give him a few tips. He always asked if I was going to be in another play soon and wondered what I was going to be writing about today. He showed genuine interest in other people. He was a quiet, dignified man, yet you could tell immediately that his heart was devoted to Christ. A true soldier of the cross, he worked hard alongside other Christian brothers and sisters to build our first church and school.

Last week he was diagnosed with untreatable cancer of the pancreas and liver. Within one week, his life was snuffed out. A blessing because he did not have to suffer through the illness for long, but difficult for those who love him and will feel empty in their hearts for a long time.

Since we all travel different avenues in our lives, we establish new friendships and cling to the old. It is indeed good to know that we will all be reunited again on that day when Christ returns to earth once more. It will be the greatest reunion ever.

We miss you already, dear friend, but we know that we’ll meet again and our friendship will be rekindled on that day.

Mountainous clouds enshroud a sky of black,
Filled with tears from the Lord of all.
He sees and He knows our tribulation.
The depth of our sorrow is in His hands.
There is nothing we can do to take away our sadness.
We cannot change the course of our lives,
But He has turned His own tears to cleansing waters
Through the death of His beloved Son.
Washed – forgiven from sin’s deadly pain,
We can dance in His refreshing rain.

RIVER CITY BOAT HOUSE

e91d573bad5aa44fde8f872573bd98b8

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

When you live in a city built on a river which stretches through the middle of the entire country, you grow to expect delays.  Commerce and industry have invaded this town of mine and created roads, highways and bridges throughout.  It is a bustling city, filled with those wanting to reach their destination quickly.

Thinking back to another time – a long ago time – when people didn’t rush so much or need to get somewhere in a hurry – That same river was here. The landscape has changed over the years, but the river remains the same.  Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn floated on a log raft on the lazy days of summer.  A row boat with a couple fishermen found little spots that yielded an abundance of fish.  Logs floated down the mighty Mississippi to be cut into lumber.  French Canadians and Native Americans journeyed in voyageur canoes to find new places to live or sell their furs. It has always been a means of getting from one place to another and to transport goods.

Some folks use the banks of that river to set up a temporary camp as they travel homeless across country in search of a new life.  Some set their canoes in the river for a romantic cruise.  Others actually set up their homes on that same waterway.

Imagine living in a house atop the water.  Imagine the waves lapping up against the bow, gently waking you each morning.  Try to think of being rocked to sleep by the current below.  The smells of rich soil – the sounds of birds singing – the touch of cool, refreshment – the sight of clouds billowing overhead and the sun pushing its way through the leaves – the taste of a gnat who forced his way into your mouth.

Life on the river can carry you off to places you have never seen,

It winds through great cities and into small towns, with areas filled with green,

This great waterway has traveled so long, remaining the same yet it’s changed,

It still keeps on rolling and says not a word, though years have much rearranged,

Still when we let go of our mundane lives, when we want to follow our dreams,

Step out of the box and into a boat, make your house the river and streams.

THE BEGINNING OF LIFE ETERNAL

Eternal Life

I’ve reached a point in my life where many of my friends are being released from their pain here on earth and have passed into heaven.  It’s tough to see those we care about leaving this life.  It not only reminds us of our own mortality, but we selfishly want to hang onto them for as long as possible.

Our lives matter.  We’re born with little wrinkled bodies, kicking and screaming and we often leave in much the same way.  God gives us this time on earth as a period of grace where can experience just an inkling of what lies ahead.  We also experience emotional and physical suffering during our lives.  We feel the pain of a scraped knee, a broken heart, betrayal, fear and anger.  We also learn what love is and how sharing yourself with another can make your heart soar.  We live through trials every day, but we reach successes as well.

When most of us reach the end of life,  we may become anxious for it to end the pain we suffer or the natural decaying of our bodies, but we all have a purpose for being here.  God has a plan for each one of us and when that plan has been fulfilled, He has an even greater outcome for those who put their trust in Him.  Life here on earth is just the beginning.  What a glorious place we have waiting for us.

Thank you, Lord, for giving me this life to share your great news with others and for your promise of eternity in eternity.  Death no longer has dominion over me.  Amen!

MY WALK, HIS WAY

proverbs 9

When I began writing this blog, almost five years ago, I had no idea what I was doing.  I enjoyed reading others’ posts.  I made some new good friends – some disappeared along the way – some even went to heaven.  I was concerned about running into doctrinal theology and I’m not an expert in even the smallest way.  Still, I began writing things that had a bearing on my life and eventually my sharing started to catch on.  I began to realize I wasn’t the only one experiencing difficulties.  I wasn’t alone in my journey.  I had a whole group of friends, I’d never met and probably won’t, but I became part of an exceptional community of believers.

We may not always agree, but our words are often helpful and that was my original intent with this blog.  When we try to accomplish things, the best way to do so successfully is to ask for God’s guidance.  We go to the place where His truth is made clear to us .  We read and study the Bible.  We go to church.  We participate in worship and praise.  We share the Word with our family and use it as a manual for our lives.  It all comes back to our relationship with the one who created us.

We will never walk alone if we put our confidence in Him.  As I’ve grown older, I become more aware of His presence in my life. I can look back at difficulties endured and realize He was there all the time.  We have His promise to never leave us – to guide us – enrich us – encourage and inspire us to do things we thought we never could.

God has designed a perfect plan for our lives.  It will be filled with obstacles and successes.   He will lift us out of depression and anxiety.  He can soothe a breaking heart.  He will give rest to those who grieve and comfort to those who weep.  He will support us every step of the way and when we reach our final destination, He will welcome us into His perfect kingdom, where life goes on forever.

We are experiencing the walk, but He has mapped the entire journey out for us and is with us all the way.

CABIN FEVER AGAIN!

10978482_728006103963521_7175452482801379795_n

Last week our city closed down because of the weather.  My car wouldn’t start, our pipes were frozen inside the house and we had no recourse but to stay inside and be warm.  As usually happens in Minnesota, if you have enough patience, things will generally return to normal – whatever that is.

This week,as soon as the temperatures rose to almost 40 degrees, my car started right up. So things sort of returned to semi-normal.  Our trash can couldn’t be taken out for collection, because the short thaw caused it to refreeze and become immovable when it was time to place it at the curb.  The pipes unfroze without bursting – another blessing.  I was still confined to the walls of our new, old house because Paul was teaching art classes and tending the gallery that houses his one man show.  We had warmth inside, hot water and enough food for at least a week – yet another blessing.  We also made it to church on Sunday to hear God’s Word and encourage one another.  Who’s counting my blessings?

Monday brought an ice storm, so my weekly coffee klatch with some women from church was cancelled.  Most of us have osteoporosis and the slightest fall could send us to the ER.  So homebound again!  The next few days were filled with snow and trying to clear it from the driveway and automobiles.  A neighbor plowed our sidewalk and part of our driveway.  My car is now covered with twenty inches of snow and it’s not going anywhere.  My dear husband has been flexing his muscles and doing the remaining shoveling.  He had to shovel a path for the dog, because he refuses to answer nature’s call in a foot of snow.  I mean, imagine trying to crouch in icy snow and frigid temperatures.  Therefore he hasn’t eaten much in the last couple days.

Even with all this junk going on daily, I was able to write the first chapter of my novel.  If you recall, I lost the original draft from my computer and foolishly didn’t made a backup copy.  So I’m starting from scratch and I think it might be better than the original. Maybe it’s not so bad being isolated for a while.

As I look back on the events of the last couple weeks, I have to laugh a little, because all of these little struggles served a purpose in the scheme of things.  God always manages to turn the icky things into something for our good.

My prayer lists continue to grow for members of my family as well as our church community.  Life goes on.  Tragedies strike.  Sickness prevails and changes our course, we struggle with finances.  Our president gave  smashing speech this week, but the next day it was politics as usual.  We pray and pray and pray.  Sometimes it feels like those prayers are in vain, but with each challenge that comes our way, we’re getting closer to our heavenly Father and even closer to our eternal home.  In the meantime, we need to look for the many blessings we experience each and every day.  We will find them too, even amongst the winter weather and cabin fever.

CAN WE ERASE THE PAST?

184e8ff522f0ff0d685e4f24cc66f52d

Note to self:  We cannot totally eliminate our past mistakes, simply by deleting them from a social media page. They will come back to haunt us.  They may be used against us.  They may force us to dwell on them.  They can consume us or we can learn from them and pray confidently that God will forgive us.

If one is to enter any occupation that puts them under public scrutiny,  they must be prepared for criticism – questioning, the recollection of past mistakes – the foolishness of a childhood prank – or an innocent action which can be totally misinterpreted in todays politically correct world.

As a performer, I’ve played a variety of roles.  I’ve had to make myself up to look old – younger – a specific race, such as Asian or Spanish.  Each of those required changing the color of my skin, the shape of my eyes, the color of my hair and the voice that came out of my mouth.  During each of those portrayals, I was not making fun of, nor being condescending to anyone.  I was creating a character for a specific part in a play.

When I was in high school, I dressed as one of our professors. There’s a picture of me in the yearbook, dressed as a man.  I wonder if that photo could be used to accuse me of being homosexual or wanting to change my gender.  Who knows what a simple photograph in a year book can do to a person’s reputation.

Political correctness has its place.  We definitely should treat each other with dignity and respect.  We should care about all people.  We shouldn’t make judgments (someone else has that in His hands.)  We should reach out to those in need.  We should not make fun of one another or slander a good name with untruths or past mistakes.  When we as a people put ourselves in a place of superiority over others, we’re opening ourselves up for similar scrutiny.

When we’re young, we often make mistakes.  It’s part of the growing up process from which we will hopefully learn and alter our present and future accordingly.  Today, however, everything is out there in cyber space or in a cloud somewhere.  Everyone can pull a picture from your Facebook page or Instagram and use it against you in some way.  It makes me wonder if there are people out there who do nothing but look for these kind of photos and sell them to the highest bidder.

Where am I going with this?  Truthfully, we must be careful in everything we do.  We’re all human and we’re all sinful.  We fall victim to an embarrassment, a foolish act, something that we regret being involved in.  Usually we learn from those mistakes and move on.  Unfortunately, with all that’s available on the internet, everyone can become a victim.

How many people will think twice about entering public office.  In fact, do we have the cream of the crop in the House and Senate?  Of course not.  We all make mistakes.  Usually those mistakes lead to change and a lesson learned, but even that is no longer possible because of repercussions which could occur from one single photograph.

We are a nation of extremes.  We fight to save the whales and eagles, yet we condone the death of unborn human beings.  We strive to protect our environment, yet we use disposable everything, which continues to accumulate in the city dump,  We say we’re unified, but we find so much wrong with each other that there is no unity whatsoever.

We cannot become victims of the past.  The only way we will ever grow is to learn from our mistakes and move forward.

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.”

IS THERE ANY HOPE FOR UNITY IN A COUNTRY DIVIDED?

03_poems_wyeth

“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,  eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”  Ephesians 4:1-3

As I watched and listened to the words of our President last night, I saw a tapestry unroll, showing the vision of the United States from a time when faith in our elected officials did not falter, nor did we have any reason to believe it was being corrupted.  As guests of the President and the First Lady, we heard of brave men and women who have conquered great odds in service of their country.  We met those who have changed their lives while incarcerated for the better. We saw those who lost sons and daughters in war.  We were given a glimpse of what our country used to be, what it has become and a plea for unity in the future.

There are things we have no control over, when it comes to government.  When we place our ballot on election days, that is our voice.  The decisions made by the people, will determine new or past representatives.  Because we are a democracy, the government is still run by the people. When we see injustices, it’s our duty to reach our representatives and voice our opinion so they can go to work for us.

I do have a renewed optimism after hearing the State of the Union Address last night.  President Trump was confident, chose his words and spoke them with zeal and determination.  His call for a unified congress and senate is necessary so we can move forward as a nation.  We have two factions, who have let personal differences get in the way of proper governing and it’s become a joke in the eyes of the world and our own citizenship.

The United States has been divided before and it led to a civil war, which took the lives of 620,000 souls.  Was the price worth it?  It was a war that never should have taken place in a united country.   My prayer is that it never comes to that again.

We are a nation of diversity.  Each individual has an important role to play in its operation.  We’re all unique and that’s what unites us. We each have something to bring to the table.  We have a responsibility to do so.

The words spoken last night should give us hope for the future, but we know tongues will wag in contradiction today and beyond.  This stalemate within the walls of congress must be broken so our country can move forward.  We, as their employers – the ones who pay their salaries – must stand firm and united. It’s time for everyone to start acting like adults.

REFUGE

7a0e86c24c43c30178286897679faf5e

ART & POETRY BY PAUL  KATHY BOECHER©

(Another train yard is a great subject for light, texture and color. Paul captures all in this painting.)

Rusted, weary, old and broken, yet a refuge lies within,

Tank cars filled with precious liquids, held together by a pin,

Hoppers, flatcars and gondolas – heavy weights of girth and brawn,

Box cars, freight cars and cabooses, worn but ready at the dawn.

Graffiti painted on the walls, box cars groan their ghostly calls,

To a homeless man and woman, beckoning within its walls,

For a while this will mean safety, from the bitter cold outside,

Temporary sanctuary, for them safely to abide.

The train yards fill with lonely souls, waiting for just one free ride,

Long enough to get them through,  to a refuge where to hide,

As those transcients just passing through, longing for the fresh and new,

Settling for what they are given, wandering through a tempest true.

We are like those lonely people, pushing on through pain and woe,

Knowing not what comes tomorrow, what we’ll reap or what we’ll sow,

Still we have the true assurance that our God will lead the way,

Through our struggles He will guide us, safely through another day

PRAYER FOR HEALING

Dear, Lord of Life,

I come today to ask your intervention in the lives of those who are in the midst of pain – of hopelessness – of fear of what lies ahead – and to those whom we can only offer prayers.

God of all creation, you knew us before we were born.  You crafted each intricate body part while we were in the womb.  You knew what we would do in life – our successes and our failures.  You have always seen to our needs and we know that you have planned a great future for us in eternity.

Because of your omnipotence, your omnipresence, your omniscience you have our destiny in your hands.  We may not know what lies ahead, but we can be sure of what you have promised us.  Sickness, depression, fear, sadness, all cause us to turn inward and sometimes even feel sorry for ourselves.  Let us never forget that you are at the very core of our existence and because of who you are, we need not give in to worry.

For those experiencing health issues, we pray for healing and restoration, but also we pray for those who care for them – the medical team, the family and the friends who love them.  Wrap your comforting wings around them and clothe them in confidence.  In all things, we know that you are always in control.

In Jesus name, I humbly ask this for those in need of comfort today.

IT’S WEATHERMAN’S DAY

16450691575_40cc7bb06f_b

It’s National Weatherman’s Day.   Most of the best weather forecasters in my state are women.  I think they choose them to deliver the bad news as a way of softening the blow.  My state, is known to have two seasons – winter and road construction.

When there’s a lull in the weather, forecasters tend to make the most of the smallest weather events.  If the wind is blowing more than five miles an hour, you better take refuge in the root cellar.  You never know how things will change and it’s better to be safe than sorry.  You could call it fake weather news because of the raw emotion it instills

Years ago, temperatures would not determine a four day, unplanned break in the school year or closing the post office.  Why in my day, we traveled five miles, by foot, in a blizzard which allowed us to see only one inch in front of our faces.  It was an uphill trek both ways.  We wore Wonder Bread bags in our boots to keep our feet extra dry.  We carried our lunches in paper bags.  We placed our wet mittens on top of a wood stove to dry.  I could go on, but you know what I mean.

The weather has become a lesson in survival.  We have climate change (?) global warming (?) dressing in layers, packing a survival kit in your car along with lots of blankets and treats for the kids.   You’re forced to walk 20 steps from the house to the warm van your mom drives to your school and then 20 more steps from the van to the school door.  But I digress.

The weatherman is the cause for many jokes.  They’re bullied often.  They’re only the messenger after all.  They don’t make the weather.  These unsung heroes, get up every day and read their charts and the radar maps, formulating what will happen over the next 24 hours.  If they go beyond that, it’s all speculation, because in Minnesota you just wait a few hours and the weather will change.  There was one day we experienced extreme heat and humidity, snowfall, hail and tornado warnings. Then it rained like the Dickens.  Well there I go, digressing again.

So today, when you’re watching the weather report, remember to thank your weatherperson.  He/she are those who will determine how your dress, what you pack in your car, if you must shovel your way out of the driveway and scrape two inches of frost off your windshield.  They actually set the tone for the day.

By the way, it’s snowing in Minnesota.  We have a thick layer of ice right outside our door, from the short heat wave that melted everything and refroze it yesterday.  And the groundhog said it would be an early spring.  Maybe he better take a course in meteorology.

PUT ON A NEW FACE

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

Why do we long for what used to be,

Why do we wish for the past,

Why do we think the olden days,

Can give us peace that will last.

The memories we love and cherish,

Often seem more than they were,

We forget the things that perish,

And hang on to what was a blur.

The days of old were not perfect,

Though we would like them to be,

Our challenge is not to look back,

But forward in what all we see.

DOES GOING TO CHURCH MAKE YOU A CHRISTIAN?

136rjg

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON 6/26/16

thv7t5u0ie

Many think that they’re above reproach or no longer considered sinful if they simply attend church.  Many are also there because they feel safe from the world outside.  Some even use church as a place to compensate for the sins they commit every day.  Unfortunately, going to church isn’t going to make you perfect.  Only God can do that.

The church itself is full of sinners just like you and me.  It’s an imperfect body of soiled and ugly people – often dressed in their most beautiful clothes and looking like a million bucks.  Within this seemingly perfect refuge lies deceit, judgment, anger, adultery, homosexuals, bigotry, liars, thieves and every other kind of villain you can think of.  This is one of Satan’s most popular places to visit, because it’s filled with imperfect people who are subject to sin.

However, when you look at the ministry of Christ, it took place in the most unusual places. He went to the core of humanity – to the sinners of the world – to all those who needed His healing.  He still does.  Through His Word, the Bible, He comes to the broken hearted, the poor in spirit, the lost and condemned and those who need Him most.

When God looks at our wretched condition, He’s like the prodigal Father who longs for us to return to Him.  He loves when we ask for His help, because He’s always eager to give it.

Going to church isn’t going to guarantee our salvation, but if our church is preaching the truth of the Bible, we will be nourished each week – fed with the good news of the Gospel – that our sins are forgiven through Jesus.

The church body is filled with sinners and hypocrites and it’s the perfect place to find forgiveness.

A MANSION ON THE HILL

8b2656500a20defc2a7ddc62bf473c07

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

A solid base with bones still strong,

A place where love and peace belong,

A fortress from the outside gives,

A buttress where time still forgives,

The inner walls are cracked and dry,

Like aging skin they’re doomed to die,

The roof is in much disrepair,

The windows need some loving care,

In time those things will pass away,

But firmly planted it will stay,

If love resumes with owners new,

They’ll make all of their dreams come true,

A house is just a place you see,

But when God’s in it, you’re set free,

To do the things that must be done,

To make it shine and add some fun,

With God a house becomes a home,

He builds His love within each room,

If He’s the rock on which we build,

Those living there with love are filled,

Turn to Him, the firm foundation,

Who gives hope and restoration.

HAPPY GROUNDHOG DAY

ground

That furry little groundhog has predicted an early spring, but I’m not sure he lives in Minnesota.  Last year the furry little guy did the same and we had a blizzard in April.

I find it amusing that we put faith in an animal to determine our future. Of course America does so at this time of year.  It starts with a groundhog – carries over to Super Bowl Sunday and a pig skin.  Then we are subject to billions of dollars worth of advertising pertaining to monkeys and other assorted animals.  We say it’s all in fun, but is it?

Things that begin as “all in fun” , usually lead us down the path to trusting in things that simply have no merit.  In February we spend more millions on chocolate, flowers and Hallmark has it’s busiest time during that month, other than Mother’s Days.

In March we look at a little green leprechaun sitting next to a pot of gold and believe we might find a similar treasure ourselves.  In April the rain gods are worshiped and called upon to bring May flowers.  When June arrives, we begin to put our faith in the weather once more and plan summer vacations with the family, which usually turn into wild an unforgettable adventures.

July means it’s time to celebrate the birthday of our country.  Do kids still decorate their bikes and doll carriages with crepe paper and march alongside the high school band in parades?  I see a hint of patriotism in our little community, but even that doesn’t last.  The dog days of summer set in on August 1st.  By this time we’re weary of the hot, humid weather and long for autumn.  However August kind of skips over Autumn until late October and often we have our first snow in that month.  In September, the regimen of going back to school becomes the focus.  October, color start to turn and we are amazed by God’s handiwork, until the leaves fall to the ground and we have to stretch our backs picking them up.

October also brings Halloween, so watch out for black cats and witches.  November puts us in the beginning of winter and we sit down to eat a turkey or a ham and stuff ourselves to the brim. December out attentions turns to gift giving – spending too much – gorging our already bulging bodies with roast beef and mashed potatoes.  Then it’s back to January and promises are made which can’t be kept.

What it comes down to it, each month gives us a reason to elevate something other than the true God – the One who holds the wind in His fists and controls every aspect of our weather – the One who knows all, is all powerful and is always with us.  Our God is alive and consistent and answers prayers.  Maybe if we started to put Him back where He belongs in our lives, we wouldn’t have to look elsewhere for peace – comfort – or safety.

So, if you know a ground hog in Pennsylvania, remind him that winter is not over yet.  And you can tell him February 2 will turn into February 3 tomorrow.  Life goes on and with God, it goes on abundantly.

GET RID OF THAT BELLY FAT

f2eb68790207dccc4f772908fd7b5778

OK, so the after the holidays diet started out pretty good. I even lost a couple pounds.  Then Sunday came and my church is big on snacks so that got me started again.  It began with a small caramel and dark chocolate piece of candy and that was the end of it.

So here we are at the beginning of February and I’m still fat.  I don’t know really. I used to be able to blame my fat tummy on baby weight.  I had three of them, but the last time was 46 years ago, so that excuse is losing relevance. I can’t even see my stretch marks anymore and my belly button is long gone.

There are countless diets out there – each one requiring that you eat a certain way until the fat is gone.  Then you can eat again and gain back what you lost and add a few additional pounds.  Commercials on TV show before and after bodies, and you truly see a remarkable difference if you opt for diet A.  Then when you look at your own before and after pictures, you weep.

Then there’s the option of having the fat sucked out of you. I wonder what they do with all that sucked fat.  I mean, you’d think there would be a way to recycle it.  They’d need to store mine in a semi.

They have a special offer to do one area free.  Now that sounds interesting.  You go in and have one hip sucked out and one is left the way it was.  This could create some very unusual looking bodies.  How do you explain that to your friends?

Cool sculpting is also an option.  I wonder how that works.  Do you suppose they put you in a refrigerated meat locker alongside the pork chops and dead chickens?  Maybe they stuff you in one of those cryogenic machines and in twenty years you come out thin.  It all sounds very expensive.

So I try to convince myself that eliminating carbs and sugar are going to help.  Then I read that there are carbs in just about anything we eat.  Besides, I’m not giving up my daily scoop of ice cream before bed.  It helps me sleep!

So, I’m done making excuses.  I will begin again and again and again.  You’d think you wouldn’t have to worry about excess weight when you’re 76, but I’ve been doing it all my life.  Heaven help me!

It’s early in the morning, you’re up before the sun,

You don your gear for running, before your work is done,

You run through city landscapes, press on with heart of steel,

You pass the local golf course, your senses make you reel.

As you awake and realize it’s 45 below,  your brain freeze is a fact,

You’ll have to wait three months or so, to get your courage back,

You pull the covers way up high, and rest your sleepy head,

A three month nap will do the trick, so just go back to bed.
