RANDOM THOUGHT

Some days life can seem pointless. We collect dust like the creatures living under our beds and remain stagnant. All we need is to get sucked in by the vacuum of the devil ‘s lies. We could, on the other hand, be blown by the breath of God and scatter like the seeds of a dandelion. Which way do you choose?

ALL IN GOD’S TIMING

th

An empty cradle sat collecting dust in the quiet home of an elderly couple.  Carved many years ago, by anxious hands – filled with soft blankets of lambs wool.  Time passed and still the cradle remained empty.

A sad scenario for many couples today.  There are those who have no qualms about ending a pregnancy, while others long to have children.  It was the same for this pair.  Their home remained childless for years.  Only the sound of children laughing and playing outside would lighten their hearts and make them hopeful again.

They were God fearing people – followed the commandments – served the Lord in every way, but for some reason their prayers for a child went unanswered.

In this scenario, as with many in God’s book, we see how God determines the right time and place for prayers to be answered and how He uses those circumstances to do amazing things.

One day, as her husband fulfilled his priestly duties in the temple, an angel  appeared to him and said his wife would have a son, and that this boy would fulfill God’s ancient promise to His people.  Zachariah doubted and because of this, his own voice was silenced until the birth of his child.

The joy in Elizabeth’s heart had to have been overwhelming as she prepared for the birth of her first born child.  She must have wondered why God waited so long, but even though she was well beyond child bearing years, here she was old and pregnant.  The thought of having a child at my age would be terrifying, but she accepted God’s will with joy.

Things were being set in motion.   John, would grow into the man who prepared the way for the promised Messiah, fulfilling the prophesy of Isaiah.  All in God’s timing.

Isaiah 41:3  A voice cries:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
    make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”

GET READY! THE KING COMETH!

th

They waited for generations.  Not since the days of King David and his wise son, Solomon, had there been such anticipation.  They would wait for a long, long time.  They would be persecuted, live in slavery, become a nomadic nation moving from place to place without one they could actually call home.  They would know defeat, pain, agony.  They suffered undo punishment.  They were submitted to torture, death and near extinction.  The days go on even today as many continue to wait for the Messiah.

There were those who followed John, the Baptist.  Some later followed Jesus, the young rabbi from Nazareth.  Some became followers of the followers.

Time was ripe for a Savior – just like it is today.  The politics of the time weren’t much different than today.  The morality of that era were as bad and maybe even worse than it is now.  The disrespect for life – for marriage – for civil obedience – the intolerance for the poor, sick and mentally ill are not  much different than they are today.

We wait in anticipation for the second coming of our King.  Those of us who follow Christ, know that the signs are looking more and more real every day for His return.  The prophesy revealed in the Bible talks much about the end of days.  We believe that when He does come back, it will be a day of judgment for all of us.

We wait, but are we ready?  We need to be prepared for that day, by cleaning up our own act and not looking at what others should be doing.  We must come to God with repentant hearts and ask for forgiveness.  We then should share His loving absolution, given through His Son, with others  – so that they will be ready too.

When he does return in all His glory and majesty, will we be ready?

MAKE WAY FOR THE KING

3074450109_778baf109e_z

This is the first Sunday in Advent – the time of preparation for the coming of the Savior of the world – the King of glory – the Prince of peace!  It’s also a special time for all of us to reflect on the truth of God’s Word and how it so beautifully reflects on God’s covenant with man in the Old Testament and the fulfillment of that promise, through Jesus, in the New Testament.

In Isaiah 40:3-5 we first hear of the preparation for Jesus’ coming as a voice in the wilderness crying out – Make way for the King.  It’s so clearly revealed in the story of John the Baptist as he preaches repentance to the people prior to Jesus’ entrance into His ministry.

During this Advent Season, it’s the perfect time to take a look at those prophesies of old and see how clearly they have been revealed and fulfilled in the birth, life and death of our King, Jesus.

The Advent wreath is a good way to share the story of hope, love, peace and joy through the lighting of the candles with your family.  The center white candle is representative of Jesus and is surrounded by the other candles.  The tradition of the Advent calendar leading up to the celebration of Christmas is another way to share the blessings of this special season.  Start some of your own traditions with your children as you approach the world changing day of celebration of Jesus’ birth.

As we prepare for the coming of our King, let’s always remember how He left His throne of Glory to come and live among us.  He lived the life of a human being so that He could completely take our place upon the cross.  There has never been a king like Jesus.  He gave up everything because He loved us so much.

MAKE WAY FOR THE KING OF GLORY – MAKE ROOM FOR JESUS IN YOUR HEART!

MY GUARDIAN ANGEL

aef4b19852f1026fa19e851460b5e2a5

I have a pretty good picture of what my guardian angel looks like.  He probably started out as naïve and innocent as I appeared to be when I first appeared in this world.  Over the years, he’s become scarred, bumped, bruised, tossed around, subjected to bullying – physical and emotional pain – grey hair and tons of wrinkles – and the courage of a saint.  That’s my vision.  God undoubtedly has a different opinion.

He places His angels as protection for us.  It’s not that He can’t take care of us by Himself, or that He isn’t in all places at the same time, but  His angels are like his soldiers – standing as a barrier against the slings and arrows that life throws at us.

My guardian angel has seen me through times of near poverty, disease, weakness,  anger, fear, restlessness, impatience and so much more.

On more than one occasion, he’s taken the wheel of my car and set it straight.  For example there was the time my tie rod broke and I was able to continue driving to a safe place to park.  Another time as I was shifting gears to make a turn and the stick slipped out of lace and clung to my hand.  There was the time I broke down and was assisted by a man selling meat out of the back of his car.  There was the time I went into shock after surgery and felt myself floating above the nurses and doctors who were bringing me back to life.  I could go on and on about this, but I’m sue you get the picture.

This battle worn soldier has served as my body guard for 73 years.  I’m certain his Commander in Chief would say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”  Who knows, maybe his job is just beginning.

QUIET TIME

My husband and son have a yearly ritual of going hunting for whitetail in Wisconsin during Thanksgiving week.  It started when our son would tag along at the age of three to sit in the woods with his dad.  That tradition has gone on now for 44 years.  It’s a wonderful time for both of them to share each other’s company.

I know how important this time is for them.  In the past I’d dig into some monumental project while they were gone.  I’d redecorate a room – sand and refinish wood floors – bag up the remaining leaves before the snow fell – string the Christmas lights outside, but now I use the time to think of what I should be doing.

Sometimes I feel guilty for not being able to do the things I used to, but then I remember that I’m 73 years old and I should have some quiet time too.  It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but I’m learning.
It’s the time of the year when men go and hunt deer,

When they bond and have fun from the dawn of the sun.

As I sit here at home, by myself all alone,

I bask in the peace as my thoughts now increase,

Looking inward and seeing the core of my being,

Alone in my thoughts as time now allots,

There’s solace in small things – the joy that a voice brings,

The siren that wails or the screeching of wheels,

Amplified sounds grab my inner attention,

And the peace now gives way to creative invention,

In days long gone by, when youth still had a hold,

I could fill all those moments, but now I’ve grown old,

I sit quietly thinking of  the things I could do,

But I never seem ready to quite follow through,

Instead I will wait with my thoughts full of him,

Thoughts tempered with silence without and within.

EVER HAVE ONE OF THOSE DAYS?

even-in-australia

Have you ever had one of those days when everything you planned turns out wrong?  Maybe you start by getting out of bed and stubbing your toe on the bed, followed by stepping on a Lego on your way to the bathroom.  You look in the mirror and see the image of your mother staring back at you and wonder how that ever happened.

You proceed to put a load of laundry in the washer and begin folding the load from the dryer.  Why is there  an abundance of mismatched socks?  You’re glad someone thought of wearing two different kinds to set a new fashion trend.

You make a perfect breakfast for your family and each of them darts out the door before they’ve had a chance to eat it. You finish up your chores, sit at the computer and try to come up with an idea for your daily blog – nothing!  Your mind goes blank. In the meantime the dog has left a surprise on the carpeting.  After cleaning it up, you remember you have a doctor’s appointment in ten minutes.

You get in the car not realizing that you’re wearing two different shoes.  You’re two minutes late for your appointment and are told you have to wait.  In the meantime, a hysterical patient is running out of the examination room, screaming obscenities at the nurse.

The cake you baked for your daughter’s birthday stuck to the pan.  You realize that the kids have forgotten their lunches and think you will be known as the worse mother in the world.

The dog has eaten your to-do list.  The smoke alarm has sounded for the fifth time.  You look like a zombie.  The kids will arrive home any minute.  The warm cookies and milk that should be waiting (as every perfect mom knows) never did get made.  You broke a tooth when you stepped and fell on another Lego.  You have fallen short again.

This has been a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day!  We all have them, but tomorrow is another day.

REST IN HIS ARMS

bible_verse_tile_jesus_has_overcome_the_world-rf53720b9a7c245c4af5b48e21093b83a_agtk1_8byvr_324

In less than a week, the Paris government has made several air attacks on ISIS and eliminated the mastermind of the tragedy which occurred last Friday. In the meantime, our president calls for calm and not reacting on emotion. Would he say the same if it were a terrorist attack on our own country?

I have mixed feelings about the Syrian refugees. My heart goes out to those who truly were trying to escape the grip of fear and oppression, but I also wonder how many of them are coming to our country with evil intentions. I’m concerned that many are already here and could easily launch an attack.

My city is in a state of turmoil about the death of a young man shot by police – rightly so, if indeed it was a shooting based on bias. Details are still under investigation, but the media is all over it, inciting a community which already believes it has been discriminated against.

Climate change, politics, the judicial system, finding a job, care for our veterans and the homeless among us are all things that cause us to want to just crawl back in bed and never get up. We would rather bury our heads in the sand than to face all the ugliness in this world of ours – ugliness which has been perpetrated by the father of lies. He desires that we doubt the power of God. He’s been doing that since the creation of humanity.

The victory has already been won by Jesus, Christ. When He died on the cross, He took the burden of sin from all shoulders. He has overcome the world. Sin still exists and will until we reach heaven, but we can be assured that we will get there someday because of what He did.

THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

flat,800x800,070,f_u1

This morning, the sky was filled with dark, ominous clouds as the sun patiently tried to push its way through them. A luminous glow danced across the tree tops, illuminating the frost that clung to their branches. Against that blackened sky, stood a fortress of glistening trees. Streams of sunlight came upon them like rays reflecting off of diamonds. What a glorious reminder that God is in His heaven and all is well with the world.

HANG IN THERE

25da4b9f51fc16fe747f43dc9802309a

Each day we hear of horrible acts of violence in other parts of the world and on our own city streets.  I often wonder what’s going on – what’s happening to our morality – respect for life and for those who protect us.  It’s all so ugly and depressing, we could easily get swallowed up by it.

In the movie, “THE PATRIOT” one phrase stood as a reminder to hang in there when things get tough.  ‘Stay the course.’  Those  words aren’t used much anymore.  Now we think more in terms of the here and now without looking to the future God has planned for us.  We have become used to instant gratification.

God made a covenant with His people when He spoke the words in Jeremiah 31:33-34.

“Know the Lord, because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, for I will forgive their wickedness and remember their sins no more.”

Now more than ever, we need to return to Him.  He will always be there.  Just stay the course.

JUST A THOUGHT

Just because you are a child of God doesn’t mean you’ll have everything your heart desires.  Sometimes things will be taken away so you appreciate the things you have.

UNITED WE STAND?

25796_orig

The memories  of what happened in Paris, smolder like dying embers. waiting to be reignited.  Words have been spoken- fear of future attacks stand as festering wounds in the hearts of many – anger rages as some leaders continue to disregard the real enemy.

When things like this happen, our natural tendency is to go into a state of denial. We don’t want to believe that our security has or will be breached. By so doing, we can become lackadaisical about a very real threat.

After 9/11, I recall being encouraged to be vigilant. Today our world has changed. Within my hometown of Minneapolis, the protectors of our city are under attack by a group of folks who feel they have been discriminated against by the police. Respect for our safety net is under attack at a time when we need them more than ever. Certainly there is bound to be corruption in those who have been called on to protect and defend, but if we no longer trust them, we’re opening ourselves to all kinds of danger.

It seems that all the good accomplished by Dr. Martin Luther King have once more come under attack. All under the administration of a man who promised to bridge the gap between black and white.

We’ve become a nation of skeptics. We no longer trust our government officials. We’ve little respect for law enforcement. We live in a society of entitlements which wind up costing someone something. We need to get back to our basic beliefs as a nation. We were once a nation united, under God. Our Pledge of Allegiance still states that very fact.  Thank God that hasn’t been altered to be more politically correct.

GOD IS THE ANSWER

Bible-Verses-in-Psalm

Terrorism strikes fear into all hearts and minds.  Our human nature tells us to fight back – to stand up for what we believe – to give in to our feelings.  By doing so, we have already lost the battle.  The underlying motive in any act of terrorism is to create doubt, rage, a feeling that at any time something could occur.  Each one of us felt a little more unsafe two days ago when Paris was subjected to such acts.  Our country felt the same on 9/11.

Now as then, we as Christians should be united in our prayers for calm and comfort.  We should be reminded that God is still in control of this sin sick world.  It may seem that the devil is winning when we see the horrible acts surrounding us, but God still remains the victor.

Today, pray for those who have been effected by this horrible event.  Ask God to bring them the peace that He will never leave those who remain faithful to Him. Help us also to remain vigilant.  The enemy is on the loose and he will stop at nothing to bring us down.  Continue to pray for God’s intervention.

TERROR

We are living in terrifying times.  Fear grasps at our throats and many succumb to it.  We are slowly and cleverly being devoured by evil.  It’s a problem as old as time.

In my lifetime alone, I’ve experienced the fear of invasion from foreign governments with Pearl Harbor.  Again, as I attended grade school, I remember practice air raid drills where we’d be ushered to the basement and told to sit and cover our heads.  As time went by, there was the Korean War, Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cold War, Viet Nam, Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, many intermittent terrorist raids, 9/11, Syria and now Paris.

We will never escape the fear of evil on this planet.  It’s a fact of life.  However, if we let that fear rule our hearts, the terrorists have already achieved their goal.  They want us to fear them.

Unfortunately, their zeal is laced with the love of a false God.  As Christians, we are assured of the True God’s protection from our enemies.we need to come together – leaving doctrinal differences behind and pray for God’s intervention.

In the words of King David in Psalm 139:17-24

Oh that you would slay the wicked, O God!

O men of blood, depart from me!

They speak against you with malicious intent;

your enemies take your name in vain.

Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?

 And do I not loathe those who rise up against you?

I hate them with complete hatred;

I count them my enemies.

Search me, O God, and know my heart!

Try me and know my thoughts![c

And see if there be any grievous way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting!

A HERO DOESN’T KNOW HE IS ONE

As we celebrate another Veterans Day, we take time to look up to those who have given a portion of their lives to serve their country.  We’ll hear inspiring words concerning their unselfish and heroic deeds.  Many of them will bow their heads in humility, because they don’t consider themselves to be heroes.

A man or woman who serves his fellow man becomes a real hero, only when he puts them first.  Heroes are everywhere.  We see them on the streets of our cities, breaking up an act of violence.  They’re in the classrooms of schools and universities across the country, standing as guardians and protectors of our children.  They are born out of poverty and necessity.  They rise out of pain and adversity.

Heroes come in all sizes, shapes, colors, creeds and can become brave just by living life. The fellow, standing in line at the grocery store, as a young mother counts out the last of her change to pay for her purchase, becomes her hero when he offers to pay what she can’t. A woman who tirelessly cares for her aging mother, by putting her own life on hold, is a hero.  The person who willingly gives up a kidney to save a life is a hero.  Most of these ordinary folks don’t consider themselves any more heroic than the next guy.  Many do these things because they’ve learned from the greatest hero ever to walk the earth.

Today, as we honor those who serve in our military, let’s not forget the everyday heroes – those who put others first – those who humble themselves and serve – those who do things without concern for their own safety or lives – and thank God for them.

EARLY THANKSGIVING

thanksgiving-turkey-dinner

Yesterday we celebrated Thanksgiving at our house.  I know we’re early, but it has become a tradition for us, since my husband and son are Wisconsin hunters and hunting opens the week of Thanksgiving.  In a way I feel blessed to be able to celebrate ahead of the fray, because there is no pressure from the world.  We don’t have to think about Black Friday.  We aren’t inundated with football games.  We are simply together enjoying each other’s company – which is what I imagine the first Thanksgiving was.

Tradition is good.  Finding times to be with those you love is even better.  As time goes by, families become busier.  They are sometimes split by having to share time with the in-laws.  It’s really great to just have a lovely dinner together, enjoy stories of old times and actually talk to one another without the busyness of outside influences.

Our small family of five has been added to, over the years with two son-in-laws and three grandchildren.  Our table used to be overflowing with people, but daughter number one is now living in So. Carolina with her family, so we turned to FACE TIME this year to share some electronic time with them.  The internet is something to be thankful for at times like this.

It doesn’t matter what day you celebrate this special time of gratitude and family.  The joy we receive from God’s bounty is something that should be noticed every day of our lives.  God blesses us in so many ways.  If we think about those blessings rather than our problems, there’s no doubt they will outnumber the problems.  So from my house to yours, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

PEOPLE NEED PEOPLE

My yearly physical has turned into a twice a year exam.  I understand that they need to keep closer tabs on us when we get older and I appreciate that.  It gives me a sense of security that I’m still in pretty good working order.  I’m also lucky to have a very great doctor.  Seeing her twice a year, gives me the opportunity to look into the face of a kind and caring individual who spends a half an hour making sure I’m doing all the right things to keep me going for a while.  I definitely have much more confidence in her than my new mechanic.

Our relationships on this planet play a huge part in the people we ultimately become.  We meet all kinds during our short earthly walk.  I truly believe that God places all these folks in our lives for a reason – even the ones that irritate us the most.  In fact, He’s tuning us up for the rest of our lives here and in eternity.

With those we trust, we have gained solid friendships and people we can depend on.  With those who get on our nerves, we’re learning patience.  We flourish with those that encourage us.  All of those relationships have an impact on who we become.  As with all the problems and challenges in life, God has placed people there to temper and refine us for heaven.

“For you, O God, have tested us, you have tried us as silver is tried. You brought us into the net; you laid a crushing burden on our backs; you let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance.” Psalm 66:10-12 ESV

A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD

A-mighy-fortress-is-our-God1

The castles of old were built to keep out the enemy.  The walls were high and enforced by even higher stone gates surrounding them – a bulwark that never failed.  We fight a battle every day against the world, our flesh and the devil himself.  We need a mighty fortress to protect us.  God has promised to be our solid defense against these enemies.  Only He can fend off the darkness we face each day and bring light to our lives.  The old evil foe is doomed.  We can count on it.

A mighty fortress is our God, a trusty shield and weapon;
He helps us free from every need that hath us now overtaken.
The old evil foe now means deadly woe; deep guile and great might
Are his dread arms in fight; on Earth is not his equal.

With might of ours can naught be done, soon were our loss effected;
But for us fights the Valiant One, whom God Himself elected.
Ask ye, who is this? Jesus Christ it is.
Of Sabbath Lord, and there’s none other God;
He holds the field forever.

Though devils all the world should fill, all eager to devour us.
We tremble not, we fear no ill, they shall not overpower us.
This world’s prince may still scowl fierce as he will,
He can harm us none, he’s judged; the deed is done;
One little word can fell him.

The Word they still shall let remain nor any thanks have for it;
He’s by our side upon the plain with His good gifts and Spirit.
And take they our life, goods, fame, child and wife,
Let these all be gone, they yet have nothing won;
The Kingdom ours remaineth.

IS IT TIME FOR ANOTHER REFORMATION?

Throughout history the world has managed to corrupt everything that comes from God’s Word, the Bible.  This distortion continues today when we hear how many churches have eliminated using the Law of God, because most folks don’t like being told they’re wrong.  Some church bodies have become entertainment centers to make you feel good about yourself.  Still others no longer believe that the Bible is completely true – they pick and choose what connects with them.  Some have become social gathering places only.
During the Renessiance, the leaders of countries and churches were doing much the same thing.  The Church of England was partially formed to fit the lifestyle of a king who wanted to divorce his wife.  The power of the church had tremendous influence.  So much so that they could bring in revenue simply by selling forgiveness of sins through indulgences.  Out of that time came the Protestant Reformation
Are we there today?  Do our churches still preach the Word of God?  Do we have a right to stand up for the truth or do we simply accept a watered down version of Law and Gospel?

Many are fed up with the corruption in our government.  Maybe we should put as much energy into testing our spiritual guides too.  If the truth is not being taught with Biblical purity, call them on it or find a church that does.

Dear, Jesus, you are the head of the church.  Your Bible is how you communicate with us and I know your words are true.  Keep our churches pure.  Don’t allow the devil and the world to corrupt them.  You alone are the Way, the Truth and the Life.  Keep us steadfast in that truth.  Amen!

DATELINE, OCTOBER 30, 1517

Originally posted on atimetoshare.me 10-30-14

The man lay motionless in his bed, wondering if what he was about to do was even remotely logical.  His mind had been plagued for years on thoughts of obtaining a place in heaven.  He had pursued every possible way known to insure that possibility.  The greater part of his life so far was consumed with the Roman Catholic church and studying its doctrine.

It was a different time – a different place – a similar world.  The church had become corrupt as had the leaders of state.  Satan had wormed his way into this rock of Christian teaching and manipulated it to his own advantage.  He seems to find great joy in getting into God’s house and messing things up.

This man had dedicated his life to the church, because he loved God and wanted to do His will.  He was convinced that Jesus, Christ was the only mediator between God and man and he talked about it fervently.

After obtaining his Master of Arts degree his plans to become a lawyer changed when he began to delve deeper into scripture.  He became a Catholic monk – gave up his worldly pursuits – felt motivated to work hard to obtain freedom from his sins.  It took a while for him to realize that it simply wasn’t in his power.  While studying the Latin Bible he found several verses proving that it was by the grace of God; faith in what God had already done; and the truth found in the Word of God that salvation had already been won for all of mankind.

Martin Luther struggled for sleep – his clothing drenched in sweat.  He knew that his words were not only going to stir things up, but they would change the course of history.  As he ran through his thoughts, rest finally came when he realized that it wasn’t his doing that would change things.  God would do the work through Martin, to achieve His goals.

Ephesians 2:8-9  “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
