BE QUIET

This has been whirlwind of a week. A couple of things I had planned on doing were accomplished, but I was also faced with some things I had absolutely no control over. It got me thinking that no matter how much we want or how carefully we plan to fulfill our desires – everything that happens to us is in God hands.

I wonder if He gets impatient with us, like most human parents do when their children follow their own path rather than taking their parent’s advice. How frustrating it is for us. We don’t want our children to fail or to go through the same discouragements we may have endured.

I rather imagine that God is not like us in that way. His patience is beyond our comprehension. His love is all encompassing. His power and wisdom are inconceivable. His forgiveness is enduring. He has put up with us and our foolishness and still sees us as His children.

He knows what we need before we do. He has our life all mapped out for us. He has our best interests in mind. He wants us to succeed, but on His timeline. He will never give us more than we can endure. Our God is beyond awesome.

When we feel cheated, or let down; when we think we aren’t getting what we deserve; when life seems to be like too many lemons; we can count on God’s presence in our lives. He will never leave us.

So what does God say when we want things done our way? He says “Be still and know that I am God!” Good advice!

WEEDS

thBZZ74WPZ

We have a huge hill in our front yard.  When we first moved into our house 24 years ago, we still possessed the vigor of youth.  Each week my husband would get out the lawn mower and tackle that hill.  There were many times when he would sail through the job with ease, and others when I thought he’d end up in the street and get run over by a car.  The hill became a nightmare, so I took it upon myself to begin a gardening project to replace the lawn

Slowly I descended the hill with my spade in hand.  Defining spaces with perennials and rocks, bricks and stone, being careful to allow for proper drainage and erosion.

Fast forward to 2016.  The hill is now covered with flowers, succulents, Hostas, daylilies, various shrubs and ground cover.  Sweet smelling Myrtle, with it’s little purple flowers, spreading phlox of pink, white and lavender and herbs that sprout fragrance beyond compare, are all part of this giant garden. Huge thistles, dandelions and an invasive ground cover called Crown Vetch have since moved in, requiring vigilant caretaking.  It’s really quite interesting watching a 74 year old woman traversing across a hill.

Life is kind of like that garden.  We start out with goals in mind, but soon take a different path. We aren’t always sure which way to go or how to make our work easier.  The weeds of dissention, disappointment, and disheartening invade and soon we are overtaken by them.  They tug at our souls and lead us away from God.  Many of us succumb  and give up.  Some of us need more tender care and intervention.  In any event, we need someone to come in and pull out the weeds.

Jesus did that for all humanity when He shed His blood on the cross.  Every sin, every past and future wrong, every evil desire, was paid for by the Son of God.  The work has been done for us. He died so we could live and thrive in His eternal garden.  He rose from death and returned to His heavenly throne so we would know that we would never die.

WEATHERED

575058_2134983591212_118998301_n

ORIGINAL ART BY PAUL T. BOECHER & POETRY BY KATHY BOECHER©

Scuffed by the constant thrashing of the elements,

Exterior somewhat battered by overuse,

Sitting quietly in the peace of the harbor,,

Waiting for another chance,

Like us, clothed in dignity and strength on the outside,

Yet falling apart internally,

Pushing hard to survive, struggling to stay afloat,

Our bones cry out for relief, our minds turn to the end of the journey,

Where will it take us?  What lies ahead?

When your anchor is embedded in Jesus, the destination is sure,

Cast your burdens on Him.  He gives all a reprieve – another chance,

Trust in the pilot to take you home.

HEAVY LOAD

burdens

Have you ever had days when you feel you just can’t carry another load?  Do you feel overwhelmed by the burdens you’ve laid upon yourself?  When Jesus invites us to come to Him for rest, He isn’t just talking about our aching muscles or aging joints.  He’s inviting us to lay every load on Him – not only our physical needs. but our emotional and spiritual concerns.

We try to muddle through our lives, thinking we can handle everything – thinking that we have it all under own control – and then the bottom falls out and we realize we aren’t in charge at all.  It’s difficult for us to let go and let God take the reins.  Human nature tells us we should be able to handle things.  We are fed words and thoughts that tell us we create our own destiny.  God has given us a brain to help us figure things out, but ultimately He is the one who has our future in His hands.

Dear, Lord, you have given me a special invitation – to come to you for the peace I need in every area of my life.  It’s hard for me to let you do it all.  I feel I should be involved in some way.  Help me to realize that life is going to be full of trials, struggles, tough choices and fears.  Encourage me through these times and keep me strong both physically and spiritually.  When the baggage becomes unbearable, take away the weight and hold me tight.  I need your unfailing love and strength.  I rest in the security of your unwavering arms.

THE SHADOW OF DEATH

1622018_10200090411060104_3424162133157332746_n

ORIGINAL ART BY PAUL T. BOECHER©

Our lives on earth are temporal – a whisper hushed and still,

We’re placed here by the Father’s hand and through His mighty will,

He guides us through the depths of pain, He takes our hand and leads,

He washed our every sin away and cares for all our needs,

When faced with darkness, fear and loss, He lifts us in His arms,

Protecting us from Satan’s wiles, his misery and charms,

When life becomes to hard to bear, He takes our cares away,

He gives us hope, He shelters us, to see another day,

So turn to Him upon this day, when all seems lost and gone,

Rejoice in His unending love, replenished every dawn.

OVERLOAD

garage_sale_graphics

This has been quite a week.  We’re in the midst of a garage sale, downsizing our living space, getting rid of a lot of unnecessary clutter in our life and looking forward to more organization in our lives.  Add to that the fact that my husband broke one of his front teeth and the outlook of a couple thousand dollars in dental work, along with bad news about a friend’s health, a blog site that’s giving me fits at the moment and normal every day living has set my mind (what’s left of it) spinning.

There are times when we just can’t fit one more thing onto our plates, but God happens to know what our limits.  He has promised that we will not have to endure anything more than we can handle and He’s also provided a way out from under the weight of it.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

What a great consolation that is when it seems like there is no end to the problems we face on a daily basis.  To top it off, those troubles are common to all of us as a result of original sin, but God is so in love with us, that He took the burden of sin upon Himself and promises us eternal, perfect life in heaven.

So next time you feel overwhelmed or overloaded, remember how special you are to the Creator of all things.  Them you will realize that the concerns of this world are miniscule in comparison.

ORIGINAL ART BY PAUL T. BOECHER©

Leathered face, lined with a roadmap of living and experience,

Personal treasures – measures of accomplishment and survival,

Years of experience, emotions, decisions, disappointment and rejoicing,

Life shapes us into who we become,

God builds us into who we will be for etenity.

Character is a combination of those things.

OMNIPRESENT GOD

ecd1ab3811ed52513325e5883eb59e07

The idea that someone can be in all  places at the same time, defies reason  but then again, so does a virgin birth, resurrection from death, the triune God and just about everything having to do with Christianity.  There is no explaining it.  We simply accept these things as truth through faith and the Holy Spirit working in us.

Psalm 139 is one of my all time favorites, because David is showing through his words, exactly the kind of relationship he has with God. He shows great respect for God’s existence in every area of his life.  There’s no hiding from Him.  He’s everywhere.  He is omnipresent.

For most of us, the thought of having someone looking over our shoulder every minute is daunting.  We like our privacy – we enjoy solving our own life issues – we want our independence.  On the other hand, to know that the Creator of all things is right with you every day, in an instant, whenever you need comfort, encouragement, protection from all danger and a forever friend to get you through anything, is pretty awesome.

God was there before our conception.  He saw to it that our body was intricately woven together before it was born.  He continues to be with us throughout our lives – patching the bruises of life – guiding us through dark times – fending off those who would harm us – pushing us on when we think we can go no further.  He even took on human flesh, so He could free us from the burden of sin.

Don’t be afraid of that – embrace and hold tight to it.  Our omnipresent God cares so much about us that He  wants to spend eternity with us.

SSSHHHHH!

th35ZSL42V

Sure, the Bible says, “be still and know that I am God.”  I know that, but the world is spinning out of control.  The main focus of the news today has to do with which bathrooms are acceptable to use, by whom, and who we have become.  I’ve heard of parents changing the sex of their child at the age of 8 years, because they were showing tendencies for the opposite sex.  We are asked to accept and tolerate everything under the sun.  We make concessions for every practice because if we don’t, we are seen as politically incorrect.  How can I be still??

You’re a mother of small children.  The day is running amok.  Chaos reigns in what should be a quiet, comfortable place to nurture them.  You look like a mess, there are dishes in the sink, laundry to be folded and unmade beds.  Be still!  Ha!!!

You just got news that your parent has to be admitted to a nursing facility.  All these years this person has been a rock in your sight.  Now they need everyday attention to do the things they took for granted yesterday.  Relax!

Your spouse lost his job, the kids need braces, the car needs repair, there’s no extra money for anything.  Where is God in all this?

It s taken me a lifetime to realize that He’s right there with us during the good times and the bad.  He never lets go of us unless we refuse to acknowledge Him.  The easiest way to get through the garbage of life is to be quiet – let go –  breathe – let God do what He does best.  Through those silent moments of submission you are giving God the reins.  He will lead, comfort, protect and straighten out all the bumps in the road.

Sssshhhh.  GOD HAS THIS!

MY PRAYER LIST

th883OV5A9

My prayers list seems to grow longer each day.  As we age that happens I guess.  Many of our friends are reaching that time in life where intercession is needed.  Their health is failing, their eyes and ears aren’t working the way they should.  They are making big life changes.  They struggle.

Of course God doesn’t need my help when it comes to those who are hurting, depressed, anxious or just plain worn out.  He’s in charge of the stars, the moon and the universe.  He covers the earth with His ever watchful eye.  He knows the comings and goings of all things.  He knows everything.  He hears each and every prayer and that’s why it’s important for us to pray.

By carrying each other’s burdens, we’re joining our hearts and voices to God as a corporation of believers.  Our prayers have power, not of themselves, but by the intervention of the Holy Spirit.  Besides, we are commanded by Christ to do so.

I have heard many friends say that they could feel the power of the prayers of their fellow Christians.  Prayer can move mountains.  It can heal broken hearts, broken spirits and broken bodies.  Prayer is placing all of our earthly needs into the hands of the One who knows each and every one of them.

When you don’t know the right words to pray, leave it to the Holy Spirit.  He will translate your groans into words that only the Father can understand.

Dear, God, hear the cries of your people.  Listen to their pleas for help and protection.  As sinners we come before you, knowing that we’re forgiven and are now the sons and daughters of the most high.  You alone have the answers for all our problems and needs.  I ask that your will be done for those who call upon your name.  Amen!

WHITEWASHED

photo 3 - Copy

ORIGINAL ART BY PAUL T. BOECHER©
The white picket fence has seen better days, a bucket of whitewash will do,

To cover the shadows and darkness of life, to make it look better and new,

But time once again will take over its days, the task will once more be done,

‘Til over and over the fence is renewed, for a time the battle is won,

We, like that old fence, can also be cleansed, with God’s forgiveness and love,

But His washing is pure and eternally given from His right hand above,

All our sins are forgiven, not a one will remain, He paid for each single one,

Our souls have been washed in the blood of the lamb, God’s own dear, precious Son,

Death no more holds a sting, we have freedom at last,

So hold tight to that truth.  Don’t hang on to the past.

Come to Jesus and thank Him for His sacrifice,

Your forgiveness is won, you will see paradise.

KATHY RANT

540704_10151419334472945_1139317471_n

There are times when Maxine has wisdom beyond her years.  Good heavens, did I really say that?  I must be about the same age so I guess I’m allowed to express my opinion occasionally.  Lately I’ve found myself sitting down after a long day to enjoy something on the tube, only to realize there isn’t anything worth the time and effort to stay awake.  That, coupled with the fact that I’m losing my hearing, leads to an early bedtime or often sawing a cord of wood while curled up on the couch.

We pay an exorbitant amount of money for a large list of channels, and  we can’t find one that has anything to offer.  It’s gotten worse as we’re exposed to all this political garbage every day.  The news channels are filled with rhetoric, slander, judging legal cases before they come to trial and inciting racism, fear and general disgust with humanity.

Our community of law enforcement has been placed under ridicule, blame, and hatred.  Our teachers are being bullied and physically assaulted.  Our political leaders sit quietly in congress while the people struggle to maintain jobs so they can simply survive.  There are times when I think this world is totally upside down. Those we once looked up to are now seen as the enemy.  Those we respected are revealing dark sides.  All of this is sent to us at a fierce rate of speed through the world wide web and decisions are being made based on the sensational.

So, we sit back in the comfort of our homes and absorb by osmosis tons of garbage each day without even realizing what it’s doing to us.  Our everyday living is cluttered with a form of brainwashing that’s solidifying within our brains.

Today, don’t turn on the TV.  Don’t listen to talk radio.  Avoid reading news updates on the internet or social media.  Spend that time reading your Bible, studying it, inwardly digesting it, scouring it for answers.  Listen for the quiet.  I’m certain you’ll find peace and have a better day.

BUMPS IN THE ROAD

bumps

So, you’ve got it all figured out, do you?  You’ve made a blueprint for your life and expect everything to fall into place.  You begin to put things into action and suddenly reality sets in.

Your child needs braces – the doctor says you have cancer – you lose your job, your income, your pride suffers.  Then come the little bumps – your car won’t start and you really don’t want to max out your credit car getting it repaired.  You break a tooth.  Your back goes out and you’re in the middle of getting your house ready to market.  Your hair won’t cooperate and you have a big interview for that job you need so much.  Someone reacts negatively to one of your posts.  Your spouse has misinterpreted something you’ve said.  Your washing machine breaks down.

When we try to run things. we can anticipate those nasty bumps that happe when we least expect them.  We’re human beings.  We think we can manage our lives.  We need structure and goals to get motivated.  God designed us that way to separate us from the animals.  He gave us intellect, a free will and the ability to make smart decisions. Still when we forget to include Him in the equation, we can expect a roller coaster ride through life.

1 Corinthians 15:58 tells us, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”

God doesn’t  promise to make us rich, or famous, or anything that gain success in this world, but He has promised, those who  believe in Him, that they will inherit eternal life. Let His plan work for you.  You’ll find the directions in His Holy manual for life – The Bible.

OBSERVE – BELIEVE

photo 3 - Copy (3)

ORIGINAL ART BY PAUL T. BOECHER©

A seed falls from a tree.

It burrows and nestles in rich soil,

It springs forth with new life,

Fragile branches at first,

Growing strong with each passing day,

Expanding, stretching, embracing the sky,

Reaching for the face of its Creator,

It bends and twists in the storms of life,

It blossoms and thrives in good times,

It grows stronger in bad times,

It withers, it shrivels, it dies,

But it doesn’t end there,

The circle of life continues,

Watch, observe, delight in God’s hand in it.

The ability to observe is inherent in all of us unless our eyes have been blinded from birth, but even then God gives us four other senses to allow us to breathe in everything in our existence.  We may not be able to see the brilliant colors, the majestic mass of a tree, the vastness of the heavens or the beauty of a sea or landscape, but He blesses us with other ways to “see”.

Every artist, whether a writer, painter, sculptor, musician or dancer must observe everything in life in order to portray it in a believable and convincing way.  Studying every idiosyncrasy, examining each detail, with all the senses God has given us, allows our interpretation to be expressed in unique and wonderful ways.

Praise the Lord for the special attention He has paid to every detail of this life.  He calms the storms, He makes things grow and develop, He provides for every living thing, He gives life to all things, He provides for eternity.  With Him, our salvation has been assured and life everlasting waits for those who believe in Him.

DAY BY DAY

There are days when we simply wonder if we will be able to make it through.  This hymn gives strength in those moments.

1 Day by day and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best–
Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.

2 Ev’ry day the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour;
All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
He whose name is Counselor and Pow’r.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made.

3 Help me then in eve’ry tribulation
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
Offered me within Thy holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.

God is our refuge in all tribulation.  May He walk with us through every trial and temptation and bring us safely into the comfort of His loving arms.

HE IS EVERYWHERE

bounty

Original art by Paul T. Boecher©

The sky declares the glory of the Lord,

His power is made evident in the turmoil of a storm,

He stirs the clouds with His little finger and they obey,

Gathering into multitudinous troops, they bow before Him,

They join together to fill the heavens with insurmountable energy,

They retreat at the sound of His voice,

He calms them after the tirade is unleashed,

and tranquilizes the sea below,

He directs all to dissipate and be still,

He erases the clouds at His will,

He mutes the trembling thunder and hushes the wind,

His strong arms turn a terrorizing tempest into peaceful bliss,

God is in the heavens and all is well with the world.

CITY SCAPE

switchORIGINAL PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY PAUL T. BOECHER©

A string of box cars clatter across the tracks – chugging, clanking, rattling,

Slowly creeping through the city, on a mission to somewhere,

What lies within those cars?

Is it something perishable, something necessary for life, life itself?

Surrounded by traversing wires in the sky,

Shrouded and dwarfed by the silos prepared to greet them,

Greeting other cars along the way,

A range of sizes and shapes, dotted and covered with graffiti,

The language of a transient, a poet, an artist, a soul,

Switching back and forth through the web the city weaves,

A tapestry filled with threads of life, if you look for them.

The city can be a lonely place, but when you let yourself,

You will see that life abounds in every square inch,

Open your eyes,

Look for the beauty,

Don’t let the outer appearance fool you.

SCURVY DOGS

13102681_10201489378513416_8888054960113344264_n

Yesterday ended an eight week after school program of drama enrichment.  Nine kids ranging from 2nd to 4th grade showed off their acting skills to their classmates and parents.  Working with children has always been a blessing for me, but there are times when I wonder if anything is getting through to these little ones.

There’s the arguing amongst themselves – forgotten lines and cues – missed entrances, total disconnection from the task at hand and did I mention missed lines?  I’ve learned in my years of doing this, you don’t always see immediate results.  Sometimes it takes many years.  Other times, they get it right away.

The joy of the entire process is not in the perfection, but in the growth.  When we look at our children, we often expect immediate results.  We expect good behavior without really setting good examples.  We expect them to clean their rooms without showing them how.  We want perfect little people, but forget that they aren’t perfect.  None of us is.

Parenting can be a most delightful experience, but most of the time you don’t realize it when you’re going through it.  For most parents, the process is a fly by the seat of your pants experience.  You take things as they come and deal with them in the best way you can.  In doing so, your children will eventually find a steady course and you’ll learn along with them.

The only manual on child rearing that has any real value is in God’s Word.

“Train a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it.”

You might think I’m weird to be such a glutton for punishment.  I like to think of it as enjoyment in watching children grow into responsible young adults.  Besides, just look at those faces!

SO, WHAT’S THE PLAN?

th0LDTIRG3

OK, I give up.  What’s the plan?  It’s so easy to get discouraged when looking at what lies ahead, because of the unknown.  If only everything was spelled out in simple language.  For centuries people have wanted to know what their future held.  Even in ancient days, they looked to the stars, soothsayers or prophets for answers.

When Jeremiah penned the words to those who had been exiled from Jerusalem to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar God was actually laying out the plan for them.  These folks were undoubtedly unsure about their future, but were told to accept their captivity and try to restore their numbers and bring prosperity to the land of their enemies.  By doing so, they would also prosper.   He wasn’t simply handing them an insurance policy for a good life – He was demonstrating how to accomplish it.

God wants us to plan for the future.  He wants us to be wise in our decision making.  He gives us tools whereby we can achieve our goals. He gives us instructions on how to live, cope, share, trust, and believe in Him and what He has planned for us.

When we look for answers in all the wrong places, we’re opening the door to failure.  The only place to find truth is in God’s Word, the Bible.  God knows what lies ahead, because He’s already got it mapped out.  He knows every obstacle  we’ll encounter.  He realizes every goal we’ll meet.  He’s our counselor in times of decision – our benefactor in time of need – our Redeemer in times of hopelessness – our Prophet, Priest and King.

Even into our old age, He is with us and is making His plans known to us.  Be confident that His plan is perfectly designed exclusively for you.

THE TANGLES OF EVERY DAY

composite icicle 7-22-06 39,40

We’ve been striving to downsize our life for the past few years, by weeding through a lifetime of things, memories and junk that continue to clutter and often get in the way of doing that. We continue to work at our jobs even though well past retirement age.  I’m in the midst of producing a full length play with 24 young actors.  There is the spring cleaning to be done and general sprucing up in the garden.  There are health issues to think about and a lack of 20 year old energy and physical strength to overcome any of it.

Life becomes so cluttered with unnecessary baggage and junk that gets in the way of living.  Simple day to day consists of countless things to do, places to be,  time consumed and getting no further than we were the day before.

When things  get that way, we need someone to rescue us.  We need not only a Savior, but a Comforter.  God provides both through His Son Jesus and His Holy Spirit, but still some days you wonder if there ever will be true peace.  We want to have a handle on things, but the truth is we can’t do anything without His help.

Dear God, I need your presence in my life every day.  You’ve paid the price for my salvation and given me the best possible gift ever.  Help me sort out the problems and challenges of every day and put them in order of importance.  Assist me as life changing decisions are made.  Be with me as I resist change or hang on too tightly to things of this world.  Only you can give me comfort and courage at the same time.  Amen!
