ALL THAT YOU CAN BE

Religious_wallpapers_233

Soon seasoned athletes will compete in another World Olympics.  They’ve been training for this moment for years and are ready.  They’ve prepared in advance for what lies ahead.  They are motivated, driven, competitive, anxious, hopeful and even a little scared.

As Christians we need to prepare ourselves as well.  We could conform to this world of ours and become tolerant of everything, lose our identity and trash our entire belief system because of it, cave to the maddening crowds and just give up, but this isn’t what God wants from us.

God demands perfection from His children.  He wants us to be set apart from the evil of this world and make ourselves spiritually ready to meet Him face to face one day.  Will we be prepared?  We will if we allow our maker to train us for the road ahead.

Our diet should consist a steady flow of the spiritual milk of the Bible.  Our activities and exercise should be dedicated to service rather than being pampered by others.  Our minds need the constant reminder that Jesus has taken away our guilt and given us the victory over death.  There will be bumps along the way.  We will struggle, be in pain, face difficult decisions, but in the end we will win the race.

Do not be fooled by the lure of the world.   It gives no prize to those who don’t deserve it, but in God’s world, even the greatest of sinners will receive the adoption into God’s royal kingdom.  What a victory.  What a prize and it’s a free gift.

POKIE WHO?

pikachu-pokemon-starter-pokemon-go

I guess diversion is good once in a while.  We all need a little change from the fast pace of life.  We often become so involved in the rat race that we forget why we’re in it.  We run around like ants going back and forth from nest- to the world- to provision and back again – often missing out on the path along the way.

A few weeks ago I noticed a small group of people standing in one area with their cell phones at the ready.  I assumed they were there to meet someone or were a group of runners who had stopped to catch their breath and fuel up on their emails.  As the days went by, the group began to grow.  As I passed the spot a few days ago, I was amazed to see a crowd of about 50 with noses in phones, lawn chairs, silly hats, picnic baskets, and water bottles.   No – they weren’t all kids or millennials.  There were also those in their 50s and up.

Apparently a new craze has developed over a long gone Nintendo character who is making a strong comeback with those who are into it.  It’s also caused some problems.  In a time when protests over controversial issues are becoming the norm, it’s easy to assume this might be a group of radicals or free speechers.  Some issues have arisen regarding the sites they meet at – because they are special parks honoring veterans.

I don’t have a problem with this phenomena per se, but I’m curious as to why so many are looking for this silly little character.  Sure it’s a game.  Maybe people are just looking for some different kind of physical exercise to go along with their smart phone activities, or chance encounters or opportunities to meet others like themselves. Maybe their lives need something to fill an empty spot within them.

I wonder what would happen if I stood in the middle of a parkway with a Bible app on my phone and began reading out loud.  Would I attract a crowd?  Would people listen to the words?  Would the Word make a difference?  Of course we know that the Word will never return void.  Maybe we should think about doing that.

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

Stretching into the azure blue sky, piercing through the clouds,

A mighty pine reaches to touch the face of its Creator,

How often we try to obtain such freedom,

We daily attempt to accomplish our goals,

We fall and try again,

Eventually we wear out,

Our spirit dies within us,

We collapse under the strain,

We give up in defeat,

But in that very moment God rescues us,

He takes even our darkest moments and brings them into the light,

His wings cover us and protect us from further pain,

He lifts us up and cuddles us in His abiding love.

A TIME FOR EVERYTHING

Ecclesiastes-31

God’s timing is certainly not the same as ours.  Our every day is pigeon holed into to-do lists, work, appointments, vacation time, workouts, meals and other activities.   We  like things to be organized and well planned – but we often forget that God is in control of the master plan He’s already laid it out for us.

As King Solomon clearly stated, there is a time for everything under heaven, but in the end we all face the same destination.  We will die.  Our bodies will be returned to dust.  We will be no different than any other living thing when it comes to that time of passing.  Death is as inevitable as taxes.  No matter how long we try to extend life, we know we won’t live much longer than the average life expectancy.

Why are we allowed to roam around this planet for a span of 70-90 years?  Some say that we make an impression during our lifetime.  We leave an indelible mark on those we leave behind.  We serve a purpose.   So what exactly is that purpose?

We have been set apart from the animals in that we’ve been blessed with the ability to reason – to think – to plan, but we also have been blessed with God’s unconditional love in spite of our stupid mistakes.  He wants only what’s best for us.  We must learn to place Him in the highest esteem – trust Him  – depend on Him – believe that He will use us for His purpose.

These are not easy things for us as human, sinful beings to do.  We like the feeling of independence.  We thrive on our own accomplishments.  We enjoy being praised for what we’ve done.  To turn that all around and become totally reliant on someone else is a difficult concept, but once that happens., you have the freedom to do God’s work efficiently.  Because of Him, we are no longer slaves to sin, but brothers and servants of the Almighty God. That’s what I call purpose!

We go through many changes in our short existence.  When we’re born, we struggle from the safety of our mom’s womb into an unknown and difficult world.  We take our first steps as a leap of faith.  We grow into our teens thinking we are prepared for everything life has to give us and take chances that we maybe shouldn’t.  We make amendments to our lives when we get married and soon learn that we are no longer one person anymore.  We learn to pledge to put our mate first in our lives.  As years pass, we become involved in careers and that opens new doors and new opportunities for alteration to our future.  We grow old and think that there is nothing more to change – NOT TRUE!

It seems that God has taken you through all these deviations in life to prepare you for your final and complete change.  Old age is the portal to that place – but it doesn’t mean the end of your metamorphosis.  He still has a purpose for us, even though we think things should finally be settling down.

At this point in life, changes are still being made – some of them with the influence of those who love you – some because change is required for your benefit – some due to financial burden – others because of our changing, tired and worn out bodies.  Whatever the change – whatever the struggle – whatever new thing that comes along and drastically amends our lives – we still have the faithfulness of a God who will remain with us through all of it.  He will never leave us.  He will provide for all our needs – physical, emotional and spiritual.  He will give us the strength and courage to move into uncharted areas – even in our old age.

Lord, I praise you for all you have done for me.  You have offered me your consistency in an ever changing world.  Whatever has happened in the past – no matter how difficult – you have sustained me.  You continue to lead me in the paths of righteousness and provide all that I need for my life.  You teach me daily to lean on you and promise to be with me throughout eternity.  I pray that you will continue to hold my hand through the remainder of my years and finally lead me to paradise with you – where there will be no more changes.  In Jesus name I pray.

WALKING IN THE SHOES OF A TWEEN

It’s been over sixty years since I donned my first pair of saddle shoes and poodle skirt. Years have melted away, but a few days with my thirteen year old granddaughter,  have caused me to realize that we have a lot in common.

Tween years are like awakening the caccoon and releasing the butterfly. It’s a life filled with extremes – playing with Barbies or wanting to snag a date. Going from carefree to making the right choices –  thinking you know more than those who care for you – feeling invincible and having no fear except for spiders and strange sounds in the night –  laughing your head off one minute and crying like a baby the next – watching your body go through changes on a daily basis.

To top it all off, you’re living in a world where anything goes. Morality means taking birth control pills so you don’t have to endure an unplanned pregnancy. Going to church is outdated. Parents are spread too thin to spend time talking or doing things with their children.  It’s a fearful time in an uncertain world.

Come to think of it, I’m beginning a new chapter in my life too. It’s called old age and many of the symptoms are like those of my granddaughter. For example, I often feel caccooned. Some days I suffer with being too warm, while others require more  layers. I love doing silly things that my contemporaries find childish, but I’m not yet ready to kick the bucket. I think I know more than those younger than me, but I still have a lot to learn. I look in the mirror expecting to see my radiant smile, only to be greeted by my mom’s reflection.  I go to bed wondering how I got through the day and rise with renewed zeal most of the time.

Life is a roller coaster, particularly during pivotal stages, but we get through it pretty much unscathed.  The human spirit – created by God Himself – is an amazing equalizer. We are fearfully and wonderfully made, even when our lives change.

BACK FROM LUNCH

ac2010da2f6c34e4ae8247bee1fbf0e7

Well a week ago, I was trying to sneak in a quick post to indicate that I would be offline for a while, because I was running a 9 AM to 3:30 PM musical theater camp.  Needless to say, I never completed the post, but I did get a few good comments on it and quite a few likes.

We’re also in the process of selling our house, which means “perfection” for showings 24/7.  Add to that the possibility of adding a new roof, a building inspector that found a million things wrong, two hot offers immediately after listing, no internet, having to get new phone service, internet service and direct television service and did I mention internet.  I’m truly amazed at how much I’ve grown dependent on this tool of the devil.

Fortunately, I had the distraction of working with 13 delightful children for most of last week, while my husband bore the brunt of all these other issues.

In the midst of this, I read Chuck Swindoll’s biography of Joseph from the Old Testament just to fill the void of not blogging.  What a lovely book.  If you have the opportunity, take time to read it.  God used Joseph, the favored son of his father and turned this young shepherd into the prime minister of Egypt – pharaoh’s number one guy.  In spite of the suffering he went through in his young life, God found a way to turn the betrayal of his brothers, the false accusations hurled by a seductive married woman and time in prison – He used all of this to better Joseph’s life.

The ugliness of a brutal world surrounded him, but because Joseph remained faithful to the God of his father, his misfortunes turned into wealth and power beyond his comprehension, but he never once took credit for any of it.  He only honored God.

When we go through difficulties in this life, when we run into roadblocks on a daily basis, when we think there is no end to pain or heartache, we often come to the end of the rope.  We wonder why all this calamity is coming our way.  We sometimes give up.

Joseph may have flaunted his status with his brothers, along with his colorful robe and even though his dreams made them seethe, but God used this scalawag to bring the people of Israel to the land of Goshen, where they’d thrive for many years.

God works in us in the same way. He pushes us around sometimes like a lump of clay, or tosses us into the fire to refine us, but we must remember this – if we place our trust in Him and His holy will – He can do amazing things for us.

I know he’s planning great things for us, but even so, I wilt into fear – give way to doubt and angst – I think I’m trusting and letting go, but then I begin to worry or fret once more.

Dear, Holy Father, there are those with much greater problems than mine.  Many of my friends are suffering with difficult illnesses, family breakdowns, broken marriages, loss of faith, mental and even physical abuse.  Sin has caused all of this to occur, but you sent your Son to take away our sin, so we can rest assured that you’ll be with us through all of it and you are preparing a mansion for us in heaven.  Only you can make something good out of something hopeless.  Help me to reaffirm that thought in my heart and mind.  Amen!

LORD, HEAR MY PRAYER

th

We live in a time of extensive strife – everlasting discontent – endless wars – devastation caused by them – mindless acts of man – meaningless destruction which harms innocent victims .  It sometimes feels overwhelming.

The headlines and top stories of the day consist of violence, hatred, anger, tragedy and the ugly side of life.  A day doesn’t go by when we don’t hear about man’s inhumanity to man.  Is there any hope for this world wracked with sin?

We often become so wrapped up in our own little realm of sorrow, we forget to pray for those outside of it.  We forget that God is still in control and try to mend things ourselves.

Today, remember to pray for the world we live in.  There is always going to be trouble in it, but we can be confident that God has it in the palm of His hands.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”John 14.27

Lord, You tell us that you will not only provide peace for our souls and minds, but eternal peace.  As this world spins more and more out of control, remind us that you have a plan for everything.  Give us the comfort of knowing that our real peace comes from you. Amen!

LION OF JUDAH

thNXILQGJB

Originally posted by atimetoshare.me on 7/19/14

Daniel was thrown into a pit filled with lions and was able to survive with the protection of God. David killed a lion with his bare hands to save a lost sheep from destruction.  There are other examples of this amazing creature in both the Old and New Testaments.

Lions are referred to as stealthy, vicious, eager to devour and strong. Lions are the second largest cats in the world and when they kill they usually use their sharp canine teeth to tear at the throat and eventually strangle their prey.  When they are hungry they show no mercy.

God also references the devil as a lion in 1 Peter 5:8 with a vivid picture of a lion lying in wait for its prey.

Lions work in teams to surround, confuse and attack. They finally gain control and asphyxiate their victim. This is a really good example of what the devil does to us each day as we struggle through problems, personal relationships, even when we’re involved in the work of the church. Sometimes it.  Sometimes it seems that Satan works even harder God’s house, because that’s where he’s threatened the most.  .

We must constantly be on guard against his malicious grip on us.  We never know when he will strike or how he will do it.  He sneaks his way into our thinking, our relationships, our government, every aspect of our lives.  He even gets in the way of our worship. He is eager to sap us of our strength – to suffocate us.

God help me each day, each hour, each minute to arm myself with your Word. May it be my defense against the evil one who is waiting at every turn to destroy my faith in you.  Remind me that you are not only my protector, but that you have brought Satan down, through your death on the cross and your resurrection.  Amen

MY WORLD

th

My week so far has hidden me from the outside world.  First day of musical theater camp is complete and within that six hour time period, I could escape for a while from all the hub bub and bad news of the things that have surrounded us.  Halleluiah!

Though physically exhausting for an old bag like me, working with children is like a breath of fresh air.  When things on the outside take on a carnival appearance – with sideshows of political activity and stories of violence and hatred – it’s a wonderful thing to be able to walk away from it for a while.

Unfortunately, reality sets in when you leave that sweet world.  We can’t run away from the ugliness that inhabits planet earth.  It always rears its ugly head and makes itself known on a daily basis.  It kind of makes me think about the future and what it holds for all of us.

We can go through life trying to hide, but our sin always catches up with us.  We’re going to have to deal with it on a daily basis, whether we like it or not,  However, God has made it easy for us to face some of the trials and adversities of life with hope.

Hebrews 10:23 says, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope, without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”

We have that blessed hope, that God will never let us down, even when the world does.

WHY, WHY, WHY

WhyNot

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON ATIMETOSHARE.ME 7/13/14

My grandmother had a great way of dealing with frustration. When it became too hard to cope with the memory of losing five children to untimely death; managing a farm; nursing a husband who survived 2 massive stokes – she went to the woods.  She’d sit there for a while and look at the beauty of God’s creation, focus on it for a while, cry a little  and then return to her life with a new outlook. I might add, she had her one cigarette a year as well.

Frustration is described as a feeling of disappointment, exasperation, or weariness caused by goals being thwarted or desires unsatisfied, according to the dictionary,  We all go through times like this.  There isn’t a person on the planet that hasn’t been frustrated at some point in their lives.  It can be a very debilitating emotion or it can be used as a tool to get out of that negative frame of mind.  We can let it get the best of us or we can look to God and His omnipotence and get refreshed by that.

The situations that caused our frustration isn’t going to change, but the way we deal with them will.  Some folks ask God why He’s doing this to them.  Others try put on a happy face, but still  harbor negative feelings within.

Positive and negative energy have one thing in common.  They’re both forms of energy.  Choosing the negative is only going to lead  to a defeatist attitude, self-reliance and never getting anywhere.  If we decide to go the other route, we can become energized, push forward and never give up.  Turning our attention to the only power source, will allow us to become fully recharged.  Our Creator knows what’s best for us. After all, He has promised us that He has a plan for our lives.

Jeremiah 29:11  “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE

untitled

Life around is has become engulfed with anger, hatred and rage. Riots, protests, demands, wars, terrorism, Jihad, ISIS, bombings have all become commonplace in our language.  We could easily become depressed if we continually look at the dark side of life.

Captain Jack Sparrow is hardly an expert on evading trouble and undoubtedly numbed himself with rum, but this statement rings so true.  “The problem is not the problem.  The problem is your attitude about the problem.  Do you understand?

All of us are exposed to the same news every day.  We have become numbed by much of it.  In fact, we even tune out from time to time so we can imagine that it isn’t really happening.  Many turn to the bottle to hide from reality.  Some take it a step further by becoming addicted to something that will shield them from the pain of daily living.  Often those options lead to more problems than the one worried about in the first place.

When things around us get hard to handle, that’s the time to start looking for ways to fix them rather than running from them.  Even when life seems out of control, there is a way to cope.

There are those who tell you to simply think happy thoughts, or put the best construction on things and you will release positive endorphins – or something crazy like that. The simple truth is that there really is only one way to peace, happiness, contentment and positive thinking.  Through the One who bought those things to pass.

God, became flesh.  He walked with men, taught them, cared about them, wept when they died, provided for them, comforted and encouraged them.  He demonstrated how our Heavenly Father takes care of us.

“God is our refuge and strength.  A very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not be afraid.”  Psalm 46:1-2

Today, when things continue to create anxiety in your life, remember that God is the only One who can change things.  Pray for His intervention in this world of ugliness and sin.  He’s the only POSITIVE in a world of negativity and ultimately in control of all of it.

SAINT SWITHIN’S DAY

200px-Stavanger_Domkirke_-_StSvithun

‘St. Swithin’s day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St. Swithin’s day if thou be fair
For forty days ’twill rain nae mair.’

I like checking out unusual holidays and celebrations each day.  You never know what you’ll learn.  For example, today is St.Swithin’s Day.  I’d never heard of the Sainted bishop of Westminster who lived during the 800s.  His time on earth apparently didn’t merit a great deal of attention, but once he passed away, several miracles were attributed to him prior to and after his death.

He requested that he be buried  in the church yard so that people passing by would walk over his grave and the falling rain from the eaves of the church would wash over him. Rather a weird request, but I guess his wishes were acknowledged.

On the 15th of July, it was decided to move his body to a more suitable place and it is said that it rained for 40 days after the move.  Tradition holds that if it rains on July 15 it will continue for 40 days. If the weather is fair, it will continue for the same amount of time.  I think it may have had something to do with the depth of the grave and other impending developments.

I guess you could call St. Swithin one of the first meteorologists.

Today is also National Gummy Worm day – Cow Appreciation Day and Tapioca Pudding Day.  So if the spirit moves you, meander out to the country and hug a cow.  Then if it’s not raining, plan on having a picnic of tapioca pudding and gummy worms.  Don’t worry about rain falling, because it wont for another 40 days.

REST IN THE LORD

a2bd8e24e3f74a2f1b5430504454fe66

Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

These words of Jesus have often prompted me to turn everything over to Him, but it seems like I should be doing something too.  Why can’t I simply let go and let God handle things?

It seems too easy to just say, “OK, Lord, I know I can’t change my circumstances. I need you to give me peace in this situation.” Our sinful nature tells us that we are in charge of our own destiny, but God is really the one in control. It’s difficult for us to let go and let God do what is best for us, even if it means going through trials and struggles.

Please, Lord, give me the rest you promise. When things get tough in life, please lift me up and hold me tight. Let me rest in the security of your love. Amen!

BEAUTY OR BEAST?

528656_2032195661578_1558816415_n (1)

Weeds begins quite small, but quickly grow into a thing of beauty or take advantage of other living things to sustain itself.

Beneath the surface it worms its way through fertile soil and takes hold of each and everything in its path. Slowly it saps the life out of the gems of the garden – choking, squeezing, cutting off all defense,

The garden – the farmer’s field – the soul of man. We all fall victim to the evil that lies below. It may come when we least expect it. We may not even see it coming. It can deceive us with it’s enticing appearance, but we can’t ignore it.

Our minds, our bodies, our hearts are all susceptible. The trap has been set. Our foolishness pulls us in, but something hangs tightly – with a fervency and strength our minds can’t comprehend. Some call it instinct, some see it as their positive aura or conscience. I believe that grip belongs to our precious Savior. He won’t let go – surrender.

AMERICA IS BROKEN

untitled

I’d decided not to write a politically based post today, but I happened on this one from a year ago today.  It struck me that things haven’t changed much in that time, so maybe it’s important for me to add my two cents again.

It seems to me that if something is broken, you fix it, unless it’s so far gone that you discard it. I have strong feelings about my country and I think she’s worth saving, but that isn’t going to happen unless the people that inhabit this land stop thinking about themselves and get to work.

Here’s my post from 7/14/15:

Acts of civil violence, leadership that has taken away the voice of the people, city streets full of anger and hatred, an anything goes society, loss of spiritual involvement by the citizens, a people that has lost sight of God, a nation of sexual perversion – a society that condones the death of the unborn.  It sounds like the days before the fall of Rome.  As most of you know, this is America today.

I love this country.  I grew up placing my hand over my heart to pledge allegiance to her.  I stood up in honor of her flag.  I remember a time when everyone loved her but things have changed so much in just one lifetime.

I’ve seen many fall away from the practice of worshipping in God’s house.  I’ve seen that even in the church there is division and tension.  I’ve experienced the hatred of black against white – white against black, bubbling to the point of eruption and the race riots of the 60s.  I’ve watched as 13 presidents since 1942 have done their best to get things back on track, yet none could control the insurgence of evil which has descended on this God blessed country.

We need to get back to the business of a democracy.  We’re supposed to be a self-governing country.  We’re the boss.  Our elected officials are OUR employees.  They work for US.  Somehow that’s been forgotten along with the absence of God as the ultimate leader.  If we allow our country to be taken over by people that are only out for themselves, we need to fire them.

There has to be a stop to the upside down approach to morality as well.  Even though our nation is diverse and getting more so all the time, it’s time to work together to build a great America again.

Dear, Almighty, God, only you can change hearts.  You have shown throughout history, that there is redemption and restoration in your name.  I call on you to heal our nation.  You are our only answer.  Amen!

GOLDEN MAJESTY

549256_2088268343360_1921955870_n

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

Clouds ripple across brilliant orange skies,

Gigantic cumulus tower over the others with majesty and power,

Below them lie clouds  resembling a flock of reluctant sheep,

They gather together in as if knowing this is what expected of them,

Following the leader, the shepherd,

Light filters through the mass of white,

Wrapping its warmth and radiant healing upon them,

The sky shows God’s love and compassion for these wandering creatures,

It radiates down to His wayward sheep and leads them,

Beside still waters,

Into lush pastures,

Where danger lurks, but cannot penetrate,

The protection of the Shepherd

PRAISE THE LORD!

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

This planet Earth was set apart from all other constellations in the sky,

God divided the waters and made the creatures that walk on land and sea,

His finger is in every part of creation,

When He gently placed the trees and vegetation, it was for the pleasure of all,

Man and beast, birds and fish,

To  the One who so graciously set a banquet for all living things,

To the Creator of the Universe,

Give honor,

And glory,

And praise,

For without Him, none of this would be.

How great you are, oh God,

You hear our prayers,

You answer in your wisdom,

You provide for all our needs,

You alone are the answer.

PRAISE THE LORD!
