GOT SPUNK?

ef34134ab2ca0e35cd8405b801b95c8b

After seeing “Gone With the Wind” as a young girl, my heart was set on moving south so I could talk like they do and live the life of serendipity.  I’d sit on veranda of my country mansion sipping mint juleps and saying things like “fiddle dee dee” all day long.  Then I discovered how hot it is down there and quickly changed my mind.

For Scarlet O’Hara, this was her land and she would do anything to retain it.  She always got her heart’s desire.  She was the true flower of the south, yet quite spoiled and used to getting her way.  When the Civil War tore her land apart, her true inner strength came forth and she became the heroine we all wanted to be. Her final line in the movie, “Tomorrow is another day,” has become the mantra of those who know how to face adversity with determination and spunk.

We all struggle with either physical, spiritual or emotional strain.  It’s something we have in common as the human race.  We may succeed only to fail.  We may gain happiness only to suffer loss.  We may be healthy one day and get a bad diagnosis the next.  Our lives are filled with ups and downs – sometimes more than others.

We can’t go through life beating ourselves up for not being perfect.  Our homes may not look something out of Pinterest.  Our clothes may be wrinkled from sitting in the dryer too long.  Our checkbook may show a negative balance.  Our jobs may have been cut.  Our lives may be undergoing extreme changes.  I could go on and on, but the fact is this isn’t a perfect world.

We struggle, but we move on.  God hasn’t promised that our lives would be easy, but he gives us the courage to face each and every day.  God has placed that spunk within each one of us.  Some are loaded with it, while others have to dig deep to find it, but we all possess this wonderful trait.  Waiting until the bottom falls out isn’t the time to test it.  Every day can become new when we trust in God’s promises.

As for Scarlet, I much preferred Carol Burnett’s interpretation of the heroine.

ART & INSPIRATION FROM PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

When you’re married to an artist, life is full of wonderful surprises.  I’ve forgotten the occasion, but many years ago, when income was meager and there was no room in the budget for gifts, my husband crafted the rock pictured above.  A simple rock, this gift of love sits on my kitchen window sill.

It’s the little things that fill my heart with love for this man.  He can take a smooth rock and turn it into beautiful thoughts from God’s Word, which continue to inspire me every day.  The letters have faded in the sunlight, but the message is a constant reminder of God’s love and that of the man I’ve given my heart to.

Little things can turn into the biggest treasures sometimes.

THE WORD NEVER GETS OLD

old-rugged-holy-bible-wood-texture-background-pair-glasses-against-textured-copy-space-deliberate-side-67503272

“Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face.”
Ronald Reagan

The older I get the more I realize how little I know. You would think with maturity and age, along would come wisdom. I still make foolish mistakes. I say things without always thinking of how my words might be interpreted. I try to do more than my body will allow me to do. I don’t depend on God as much as I should. My prayers are often filled more with requests than thanks.

In a world where there is so much injustice; so much fear; so much corruption and sinful behavior it often becomes difficult to stay positive. Once again, God tells us to get to know Him. Once we see His almighty hand in every area of our lives, understanding will be given to us. The Bible is an amazing source of information to guide us and keep us on the track to heaven where true wisdom will finally be achieved.

ANGER & MALICE & RAGE, OH MY!

9141152910_0c4c18f2f0_z

When we moved to Minneapolis in 1973, we were thrilled to be living in a “big” city that maintained good values – had an amazing art community – was a beautiful metropolis and still had a home town feel to it.  Something has happened in the past 44 years.  The ugliness of hatred, malice, violence, racism, sexual immorality, crime and fear has invaded this once lovely place.  It never fails to amaze me how insidious evil is. How it slowly infiltrates into our lives without our even seeing it.  The devil is on the prowl big time here, throughout the United States and the world.

He gnaws away at things like conscience, guilt, fear.  He wheedles into the recesses of the minds of children by offering things that please rather than prepare.  He digs holes for us to fall into with enticement and promises of satisfaction or self indulgence.  He sets traps for the elderly, who no longer hold high esteem in society.  His playground is in government, in our churches, in the workplace, in our schools.  He turns things upside down so that we eventually believe that right is wrong and wrong is right.

My state has become a haven for those seeking entitlements.  It is extremely liberal, tolerant of all kinds of behavior and a hotbed of anger – which grows daily.  Anger does nothing to advance peace.  It simply stirs more dissidence.

I believe we have lost many of our basic communication skills – partly because of the advance of technology – partly because of laziness.  It isn’t easy to listen to someone else when your primary concern is yourself.  Sometimes we don’t take the time to think before we speak.  Our words not only move and inspire, but they can incite and enrage. Anger doesn’t solve problems, it simply makes them worse. We have lost the ability to work together to come to a solution.

How could God possibly care about  people who constantly reject Him – – who will not defend the truth – won’t take responsibility for their actions – and have forgotten all His precepts?  Still He does love us – in spite of ourselves.  His love will never die.  His protection remains the same every day.  His demeanor is the same as it always has been, even though we face each day with more corruption and sin.  Though we change in an instant, He is slow to anger and boundless in mercy.  He is our only hope!

IN A FOG

thQ20HRPHX.jpg

There are days when things just don’t make any sense.  In fact every day seems to become enveloped with a thick fog that could eventually consume us and leave us hopeless.  We look for answers, we strive for contentment, we ask for peace but there isn’t any.  Another act of senseless violence – a loss of someone dear to us – the fear of losing a job – an act of terrorism – political folly – all of this can leave us in a murkiness that won’t clear up.

We may even ask where is God in any of this?  Our faith weakens.  Our hearts ache.  We feel helpless, depressed and alone.  At that low point, we think God has deserted us.  We fear that he doesn’t hear or listen to us.  We give up.

This is just the time that we need Him the most. He is the only One who can clear away the fog of life’s disappointments and hurts.  He will soothe our troubled hearts and give us hope once more, because He is the only consistent One who remains the same all the time.  We can count on Him.  He won’t let us down.

Put your trust in the eternal God, who created you – who loves you with unconditional love – who provides a way out for all your cares – who will never ever leave you

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

WOODSY GUY

Campfire_Tales

It started when he was a young lad, spending his summers at the lake.  He met an old native American who was building a log cabin from scratch.  Each log perfectly hewn. Paul pitched right in to help, but more so to learn all he could about outdoor life.  The Indian was quick to teach – how to whittle interesting creatures out of sticks – how to build a campfire, unlike the white man who builds a large fire and has to sit far from it – how to dig deep into the ground and build a natural refrigerator and many survival skills.

This along with his church’s version of the Boy Scouts taught him everything he needed to know about the wild.  It also gave him many opportunities to sit around a campfire with other boys and hear and tell stories that seemed to grow bigger with each telling.

Many of you’ve probably heard of snipe hunting, but for Paul it was an opportunity to take that simple story and build it into an epic.  The snipe of these fables is not to be confused with the actual shore bird snipe. When he became a leader of the group, they’d have snipe hunt on every campout.

For those of you who don’t know, the hunt took place under the darkness of night, when the boys were restless and unruly.  They would be led into the woods with a burlap sack and a stick in search of the mighty snipe, which actually didn’t exist.  However, Paul had a heavy stick marked with several notches for the number of snipe he had bagged over the years.  Quite impressive to an eight year old boy.

The story would have additions made to it on a daily basis.  When it finally reached its peak it included searching for the mating grounds of the snipe.  The way they’d determine if the location was true was this.  First it would be a stoned encircled spot.  The snipe is a very intelligent bird.  They know how to make circles out of stones.  Within the circle there would be remnants of smoked cigarettes with tobacco scattered about.  You see, the male snipe would use the tobacco to lure the female into his space.  He did this by placing the tobacco between his cheek and beak.  The mixture of his saliva and the tobacco was too much for the female to resist.

Before each of these evening hunts, some of the older boys would be planted in various parts of the woods to make noises that would send the younger boys on another wild snipe chase.  Prior to each hunt, the leaders would set out the clues. Every year, kids would begin to catch on, so the story had to be embellished to make it more believable.

They often camped at a local campsite in Crowhassan Park.  One of the roads was named Ghostly Drive.  This gave way to the dramatic addition of the Hassan Hag – a mythical witch-like creature that roamed the forest to frighten little boys; kind of like the boogie man I guess.  The story made it to one of the naturalists at the reserve and she agreed to portray the Hassan Hag.  She brought with her a small snake, which she tucked in her blouse.

That night, as they sat around the campfire talking about the Hassan Hag, some of the boys had their doubts, but then she appeared out of nowhere.  Her appearance scared the bejeebers out of most of them – especially when she pulled the snake from her clothes.  That addition to the story made believers out of them for another three years

Needless to say, this group of young boys, was highly disciplined, very well behaved, respectful and totally oblivious to all the pranks that were being played on them.

MORNING SWEETNESS

11742649_10202929204149417_777863669576081960_n

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

Just before the day is started, right before the rising sun,

He starts each early morning, with a cinnamon frosted bun,

And then he turns his attention, to the work which must be done,

He punches the rising bread dough, and sets it to rise one more time,

The scones are coated with sugar, the pies are displayed in a line,

The donuts are frosted and warm, they all will be gone before nine,

The life of a baker is sweet, when others around are asleep,

He has the whole place to himself, his passion for sweets is quite deep,

No one will suspect what he’s done, for under the rug he will sweep,

Evidence of his addiction, will undoubtedly go unknown.

Except for the obvious proof, of the way his belly has grown,

His profits will suffer for sure, but the bakery he does own.

ADVERTISING MAN

mad-men-4

A while back, a television series about the advertising business hit the screen.  I watched one episode of this and that was enough. Unfortunately it brought up some seriously bad memories.  The three hour martini lunch was played up, but in all actuality it was true.  The dog-eat-dog world of selling a client on your idea was vicious.  Men and women dressed to the hilt in the agency business and there were always rumors floating around about infidelity.

This was my husband’s chosen profession when he finished his art education in Chicago and Milwaukee.  Picture this – a young, Christian man who had spent his young educational years in parochial schools left his parental home to live and study in the big city of Chicago.  Imagine how this naïve, sheltered young man had his eyes opened to the reality of the world in an instant.  He lived off campus at the YMCA and took the El to school every day, soaking up images of life at its lowest.

He began as an apprentice in a print shop, gaining valuable information which would help him in his future endeavors.  He went through the ranks and eventually became a creative director for a large agency.  His manager enjoyed those 3 hour lunches and often kept a bottle hidden in his desk drawer.  Paul knew what would result from that lifestyle and was able to resist the temptation to become involved.  He also wondered how anything creative could come out of a gin saturated brain.

He worked many hours of overtime trying to come up with ideas that would win the client’s confidence and apparently his clear head led him to success in doing so.  So, the responsibilities grew along with the salary and he loved the idea of being free to create and sell his ideas.  He didn’t have to do anything underhanded to accomplish this either.

The day finally came when he decided to run his own agency. So with a small bankroll, he took a small office in the basement of an old mansion – sort of like returning to his roots.  His life in the funeral home was nothing like this however.  There was a psychiatrist working out of the office above him, who used primal therapy in his treatment.  Strange and loud sounds often came out of that office.

He worked alone for a few years and I helped with the business side of it, but that didn’t last long.  Eventually he hired a secretary.  Soon he moved up to the first floor and finally up to the top floor of the beautiful old building and hired a few more employees.  In the end, he moved into a new office building and hired some more folks.  The business grew and flourished for a while and he never had to betray any of his ethics or beliefs.

When the economy took a dive, he had to begin the process of laying people off and making serious cuts.  It was then that God led him to a totally different way of life.

I know the Mad Men series shows a pretty seedy side of this business, but it didn’t have to be that way. Much like the political scene today, advertising developed a tarnished image.  Now the creative side has all but disappeared.  The use of technology has done away with that process.

I have the privilege of being married to an ethical Mad Man of the 60s, 70s and 80s.  His love for God has permeated every area of his life – even enduring an environment where lions eagerly prowled.

“In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man may not find out anything that will be after him.”  Ecclesiastes 7:14

SIMPLE THINGS

simple_things_quotes1WEB

“It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.”   Laura Ingalls Wilder
Yesterday, after a workout at the gym, (yes I’ve actually started doing this again) I stopped at the grocery store to pick up some bread.  My husband loves Vienna bread.   As another lady and I stood waiting to have our bread sliced, she spoke to me in broken English saying, “Americans don’t know what good bread is.  This is the only one I like.”  We continued with a little small talk.  She began to look at me straight in the face and said, “You look so much like my grandmother.”

I wasn’t quite sure how to take that.  I’m sure I looked pretty bedraggled, after sweating for an hour.  I am old enough to be her grandmother, so I shouldn’t have been surprised. I’ve often been told I look like someone else, but as she said the words, her eyes began to well with tears.  I could tell she desperately missed this woman who apparently meant so much to her.  I was at a loss for the right thing to say, which I often am when confronted face to face with anyone.  I simply said, “You miss her, don’t you? God bless you!” and a gush of tears poured forth.

The sweet, young woman thanked me for reminding me of her grandmother and went on her way.  I felt a special honor had been bestowed on me and was more than grateful to her for sharing her love with me in that moment.  It was a simple time in a an ordinary place, but carried a boat load of warmth and kindness.  God put us together in that short span of time for a purpose.

So many of us are putting on a mask each day as we hustle and bustle through life.  We need to take time to enjoy the simple things that God has planned for us in each second.  We’re never sure when they’re going to happen, but we should be prepared for the good things that come along with them.  There are treasures in abundance if we simply look for them.

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

As we walk this world of living, the paths wind through different ways,

They can take us to a landscape, glowing with a magic, morning haze,

They can point to things eternal, we walk where none have ever trod,

But the beauty found in nature, is a view sent to us from God,

We can also find a measure, of some pure and simple splendor,

When our eyes behold a building, which resembles a bent fender,

There is greatness in the broken, you just have to look real deep,

A heart, a life, a memory, a promise you can’t ever keep,

The things we can’t control or fix, the words we think or often say,

The sins that we cannot forgive, by God are cleansed and washed away,

He makes the broken new again, He washes all the dirt and grime.

We are made new through His pure love, so we may see His face sublime.

WILDERNESS ADVENTURE

th4VUE3TYG

When his business was thriving, Paul had an invitation to attend a caribou hunt with a friend of his.  Things were going well and he a had some time off, so he took his friend up on it.  There were months of preparation time.  He read up on the territory they’d be hunting and researched as much as he possibly could.  It was nothing like he expected and even surpassed his expectations.  The two men would be flown into a remote area of Alaska and led by a guide and a cook through the tundra in search of these magnificent animals.

At first glance, Paul noticed that his guide had lots of piercings and some tattoos, which he didn’t hesitate to ask him about.  He said if were going to spend a whole week with this guy, he wanted to know as much as he could about him.  He wasn’t necessarily making judgments – just protecting himself – and yes, he was making judgments.

The first few days required great stamina as they traveled by foot over the liken covered, scruffy looking trees.  They didn’t see a single caribou.  About half way into the week, they thought this was a waste of good money and time.  On that day, a giant herd appeared on the horizon and Paul had a clear shot.  He fired and the gigantic beast crashed to the ground.

“Dances With Wolves” had not yet been made, but if you remember the stories around the campfire and the exaggerations, you’d have a sampling of what took place that evening.  It was then that the guide accidentally bumped his firearm and it discharged.  The ammunition spun within a quarter of an inch of Paul’s ear and he thought for sure he’d been hit.  The guide was extremely apologetic, but Paul’s suspicions about his character were seeming to be coming true.

The guide spent the rest of the trip catering to Paul’s every whim. He would do almost anything to get back in his good graces.  Then it was time to leave, but a heavy fog had suffocated the landscape and there was no way a plane would be able to land there, nor take off.  The first night in the wilderness wasn’t too bad.  They had plenty of meat to feed them.  By the second night, their fuel was depleted and the trees in the area weren’t able to sustain a decent fire, so they resorted to using cigarette lighters to cook their meat.

During those few nights in the darkness of night, they could hear loud explosion sounds in the distance.  I don’t think they ever actually found out what the sounds were, but it was enough to get them thinking that war had broken out and they were the last living souls on the planet.

That proved to be false as well.  Eventually the plane was able to fly in and rescue them, but during those trying hours, Paul called on God for protection and safety and of course He delivered.

By the way, the head of the caribou now resides in a bump out of the garage, which is now called the Caribou & Antler Shed.   The ceiling is high enough to house the gigantic antlers and I don’t have to stare him in the eyes anymore.

ANYTHING GOES!

thK8VCYAT5

“History isn’t just the story of bad people doing bad things. It’s quite as much a story of people trying to do good things. But somehow, something goes wrong.”   C. S. Lewis

This weekend, my husband and I enjoyed our local community theater production of the Cole Porter musical of the 1930s.  This action packed show was filled with movement from the minute the lights came up until the final bow.  Even the scene changes were entertaining.  We laughed at the antics of the characters on stage, we hummed along with some of the familiar songs and my feet felt like flying along with the amazing tap dancers on stage.

I still own a couple pairs of tap shoes from my younger days.  I probably won’t be wearing them again here on earth, but I look forward to tapping across the heavenly stage someday.

This show’s title, though performed in 1934 on Broadway, is relevant today.  Back then, our country was still reeling from the effects of the depression.  They needed a diversion from all their tales of woe to get them feeling good again.  Today we are embedded in political correctness, political revolution, diversion from fact, deception and so much more.  We need a change of venue too.  We really need something more than tabloid news and a distortion of facts.

In those earlier days, times were tough too. Bootlegging ran rampant.  Speak easies were the problem of the day.  Prohibition brought out the evil and greed in men and a whole new set of crimes were being committed across America.  This was less than a hundred years ago, and you’d think we’d learn from our past.

We are often like the Israelites being led out of bondage into a new world – a promised land – a place where their troubles would be no more. Yet, while they traveled the road, they complained and whined.  They weren’t satisfied with the speed of God’s plan.  They wanted freedom – right now!  They were easily diverted by foreign religions and practices that went against everything they believed in.  They were in a different time and place, but the situations don’t seem to change much over time, do they?

Today we’ve picked up on the anything goes attitude.  Do what makes you feel good, but make sure it’s politically correct.  Think about yourself before others.  Don’t follow the rules.  Respect is old fashioned.  Live and let live.

So what’s the answer?  How do we get from one place to another without falling into these diversions and distractions?  The best place to start is in God’s protected path.  He led those people to their promised land.  He was responsible for wiping out crime in the 1920s and 30’s.  He repaired the economy of the Great Depression and got people back to work again.  He can change minds and bring people back to Him.  He alone has the solution to all of man’s problems.
