THOUGHT FOR TODAY

Too bad we often wait that long.  He’s always with us.  All we need is to go to Him.

YOU ARE SPECIAL

76dd51d458dce9526befd81a91833086

If you feel that your role in life isn’t important – if you struggle daily with thoughts of failure – if you believe that whatever you do, it isn’t going to be enough – it’s time to put your confidence in something other than yourself. Some turn to self-help books.  Others think they can hide their feelings of inferiority by putting on a mask to cover up their shortcomings.  Some turn to drugs or alcohol to deaden the pain.  Many simply give up.  There are also those who do not lack self confidence, but still struggle because they are trying too hard to find the answers all by themselves.  That’s precisely the time we need God’s encouragement the most.

We’ll never be able to please all the people in our lives.  We won’t always be successful in our work.  We may feel left out or lonely at times, but there is One who loves us despite our failures – our brokenness – our insecurities.  He’s the One who created us. He also had a plan for our lives mapped out in advance of our birth. He formed each and every intricate part of us before we were ever born.  He crafted each cell, each nerve, each drop of blood. I would say that’s a masterpiece.

If you’re feeling insignificant today – read Psalm 139.  It not only praises God for His handiwork, it shows the intimate relationship David had with his Creator.  This is true for us as well.

You don’t have to take courses in self-improvement or take pride in yourself and your accomplishments.  You don’t have to live by the accolades of others.  The true secret to success lies in the fact that you’re a unique creation of the God of the Universe.  He loves you – and so should you.  Use the gifts He has given you.  When we put the focus on Him instead of ourselves, we’ve got it made.

DO SOMETHING NICE

thGS3T9C5N

It seems there’s a holiday for just about everything.  Today is “do something nice day.”  We shouldn’t have to set just one day aside for that purpose.  It should be part of our commitment as we walk our daily walk as Christians.

Doing good deeds are the result of God’s work in us – not in or of ourselves.  As we become part of His family and the Holy Spirit enters our hearts through baptism, (a free gift, by the way) He also gives us the gift of doing things out of gratitude for what he’s done for us.

We’re in no way responsible for the good things we do.  We’re naturally sinful and remain so until our entrance into heaven, but when the Spirit lives in us, we’re capable of shedding our selfish nature and doing good for others.  We’re able to become mirror images of our Savior in living lives of service to our God and our fellow man.

Our faith depends on our free will, repentance and God’s forgiveness.  Our good works depends only on God’s love for us.

WHERE IS THE HOPE?

a24dccad56c705e61314b12c0e67a605

I’ve gotten over my anger of yesterday, regarding everything that’s going on in our insane world and yet even with all the turmoil there is peace in the midst of it.

I know there’s nothing I can personally do to change things, but I feel there’s a real need for a return to our Godly principles in this country.  America was once a strong, Christian nation with a hard work ethic, deep dedication to God and country, the ability to overcome our enemies and to defend her with all our might.

Most of the enemies of God’s chosen people were physically stronger.  The odds may have seemed insurmountable.  We often see men of great courage rise out of the simplest circumstances and overcome their enemies.

We’re living in troubling times, but we don’t have to fear the outcome if we realize who is in control of every second, minute, hour and day of our existence.  We, as a country, need to return to the One True God.   We need to trust in His unfailing love and compassion for us.  When we become complacent about a world gone mad, we’re giving in to the great deceiver.

Churches need to be strong too.  We can’t be wishy washy in our doctrine just to satisfy the “feel good” hunger of the world.  The word “sin” must be reintroduced so that difference between right and wrong is clear again.  There are too many that don’t believe in the sanctity of God’s Word and the truth contained in it.  They pick and choose what they want to believe.

Lord, as we live each day, help us to focus on YOU and the promises you’ve made to deliver us from evil.  Give us peace in knowing that you’ve got it all under control and it will be for our good when we are simply quiet and let you take care of it.  We need you today more than ever.  In Jesus name, restore our land. Amen!

BITING MY TONGUE … AGAIN

th61QR1O0S

I know I’m going to regret writing this, but there is no doubt where I stand with our current administration and it’s difficult to be quiet when our nation is sliding deeply into the toilet.

Our world standing as a great nation has been trounced upon by Russia.  The waters are being tested as to our response.  A lone gunman releases shots into a crowd and kills several people and the gun is blamed for the crime – not the shooter.  A new age of racism has arisen, but this time it’s reversed.  Political correctness is on the table ad nauseam.  Our borders remain unchecked.  Body parts are being harvested from aborted fetuses.  What’s going on?  Has the devil been unleashed for his one last chance?

Where have our American values gone?  Where are the guts of this once revered nation?  Every day we’re shocked and amazed by the decay of morality – the heartlessness and numbness of conscience – the slow decline of Christianity – the reliance and gratification of self.  Yes, we’re shocked, but what are we doing about it?

Christians need to wake up and start taking action against the darkness that’s consuming our once great nation.  We need to defend her as our forefathers did.  We must once again be proud of her and stand strong for our principles and beliefs.  There are countless groups marching in protest in this country.  It’s time we become a voice for Christ again.

There!  That’s off my chest.  Thanks for letting me vent..

HE’S GOT OUR BACK

thGVJJ5OL8

Prior to December, 2012, there was a scurry to stock up on food, guns and gas masks in preparation for the end of the world according to the Mayan calendar.  The day came and went and the world remained.

Today, the signs are everywhere – in the skies with lunar eclipses and blood moons.  We see it in the way life  has been morally turned upside down – evil running rampant – mistrust of our governing officials – corruption everywhere.  Some fear that many of the world’s super powers concentrated in the Middle East indicates our coming demise.

So what good does it do to store up food and arm ourselves if the end is coming?  The end is the end – right?  Lots of folks think it is – there will be no tomorrow, next year, or even a minute from now.

God reassures those who love and honor Him, that we don’t have to fear the end of time.  He does tell us to be ready though.  A Christian knows that life doesn’t end at death – it’s just the beginning of an eternity in heaven.  God doesn’t want us to worry about the future.  He’s got it all under control and in His hands.

So how do we prepare?  Do we make bomb shelters or stock up on water and food?  Do we cover ourselves with gloom and doom?  Do we give up?  No!  We dig deeply into the food of His Word, the Bible.  We arm ourselves with protection.   We can be confident that there is hope for a perfect future.  It isn’t important when the day of  comes.  What’s important is that we’re prepared.  God has made that possible through His Son.

“Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Matthew 24:44).

PAIN CAN BE GOOD

pain

Anyone who experiences chronic pain will look at my title today and say, “Are you kidding me?”   All you want is relief, but pain is usually just a signal that something needs attention.  If your muscles are sore, you rest.  If your energy level is low, you eat better.  If your heart is aching over a lost love or depression, you try to keep your mind occupied with other things.

As with most things, we’re impatient.  We want relief right now. Some turn to things that will numb the pain or make them totally unconscious to it.  Some pack their lives with so much that they don’t have time to think about it.  Others simply refuse to recognize that the pain exists.

God didn’t create us to suffer.  That was our own doing, through disobedience.  We were created free from physical disability, mental or emotional hurt or the pangs of guilt.  He did, however create a wonderful mechanism in our brain that signals to us that something isn’t right inside of us.  Usually we’re spurred by this voice to do something about the pain.  We see a doctor, we work through it or we seek help.

God also gave us the conscience as another trigger.  Sometime that voice becomes hardened – glazed over by the world – the devil moves in and tries to reason with it – our flesh gives in to temptation.  There is a remedy for this when we allow the Holy Spirit to  work in us.  He strengthens us.  He protects us from the power of the devil, the world and our flesh.  He brings us new life.

In our physical and emotional lives, we can count on pain to remind us that something’s wrong.  In our spiritual walk, we can count on the Holy Spirit to make us right again.

ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER

th19Y7P7ZB

Why is it, that in a community of believers, there’s still room for the “put down?”  Maybe because we’re human.  Maybe because the devil is still allowed to roam the earth and tear away at the souls and hearts of men.  Maybe because we think that once we’re Christians, we’re immune to criticism or the arrows will just bounce off us because we wear the armor of Christ.

It seems to me that once we’ve become Christians, that’s just the beginning of our earthly battle.  We’ll be criticized for our beliefs because they don’t conform with the world view.  We’ll be ridiculed for accepting something based simply on faith and not fact.  We’ll be looked upon as fools – indoctrinated individuals – helpless – Jesus freaks.

How do you view yourself as a Christian?  Do you feel better than others because of what you believe?  Do you challenge other believers if they don’t tow the line?  Do you defeat a new Christian with doubt, fear tactics, theology, doctrinal differences?  Do we tend to feel that we’re better somehow than others?

The body of Christ was perfectly constructed by the King of Creation.  Unfortunately, the human factor also makes up that body and so often gets in the way of the truth.  We forget to encourage and build each other up, because of our own selfish needs.  We lose sight of what Christ has done for us and focus too much on our own works.  We trust in our own understanding instead of the truth of the Bible.

When Jesus gave the new commandment to love one another – He was asking us to put others before ourselves – not simply through our good works, but because of the love He first demonstrated to us.

Jesus, you are the perfect example of love and sacrifice.  Help us to constantly be reminded of your love for us and lead us to be encouragers to others. Amen!

I WANT IT RIGHT NOW!

patience-patience-pissed-off-demotivational-poster-1265208695

We live in a world of instant everything. We can get information just by inputting data into a computer. We are transported to far off places with the flick of a remote. Our diet may consist of fast food, microwave meals or even a feast including instant potatoes. It’s easy to become impatient, because we’re used to having all our physical needs taken care of in a nano-second.

The future is another thing we want to know about – right now. Where will I be in a year or two? How much money will I make? Will I die? I think most of us would like to know what’s going to happen in the future. It’s too bad the answers that lie ahead aren’t clearly carved out in stone or written in the sky by God himself.

Our impatience often gets in the way of what’s really important – the here and now. Will I take time to ask someone how they’re doing and then wait to listen and really care? Will I do my best to help others? Will I ask God for forgiveness? Will I believe that He’s already forgiven me? Am I ready to overlook the faults of others? Will I take time to dig into God’s Word? Will I share God’s love with others? Will I take the log out of my own eye before judging?

These things don’t require a lot of time. You can even get the Bible on your smart phone now. This age of instant everything can help us in our daily walk with God.

God promises to take care of all of our needs – past, present and future in Isaiah 40:29-31. Verse 31 gives a most descriptive version of this.

“But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

What does the future hold for us? If we trust and believe in God’s plan for our lives, it means never having to wait again.

LESSONS FROM THE PAST

04-20-2008 01;51;11PM

My generation tends to forget that our lives weren’t perfect.  I think we paint a picture of perfection like a Norman Rockwell view of American life.  We  hide the bad stuff and look only at the things that made our age great.

I never thought I was pretty enough, smart enough or perfect enough.  I was unsure about my future.  I struggled with the idea of going to church, because I knew there were hypocrites there.  I was teased for being chubby.  I was convinced that God was a fierce judge who was going to sentence me to an eternity in hell.  I got depressed over small things and panicked when it came to the big stuff.

Our country was involved in a number of wars.  Weekly air raid drills were the norm.  We’d be ushered to the basement of our schools and told to sit with our hands over our heads until the teacher gave us the all clear.  Families built bomb shelters.  We were exposed to a new kind of entertainment that opened all kinds of doors.  It came in the form of a huge piece of furniture with a tiny glass picture tube.  As girls, we could hope for a career as a secretary, a teacher or a nurse.  A four year college degree guaranteed a high paying job.

Segregation was a huge problem.  Cigarettes  were a kind of status symbol.  Everyone smoked – even the news anchors as they reported the news each night.  We didn’t hear about scandals in government, but they were there.  We didn’t have to lock our doors every time we left the house, but that doesn’t mean that crime didn’t exist.  We just didn’t hear about it like we do today.  Bullying isn’t a new problem, but now with social media, the options are unlimited.

It’s important to let children know they have value without putting them on a pedestal.  We need to let them know they’re loved, not only by us, but by God who looks beyond their imperfections.  Most of all, we need to pray for them every day.  We can raise them, but God gives purpose to their lives.

SHUT DE DO, KEEP OUT DE DEBIL!

url

The devil is accustomed to using our shortcomings to weaken our faith. He did it in the Garden of Eden by tempting the first humans into thinking they could become like God by eating the forbidden fruit. He did it in the desert when He tried to tempt Jesus.  Even though Jesus has already done His victory dance around Satan, we’re confronted by doubt every day. How do we overcome this?

Hebrews 4:15 says, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”

Jesus is always available as our only intercessor to God, the Father. He experienced all the things we go through in life – pain, humiliation, temptation, loss, sadness, anger, but he was sinless. He is the perfect lamb without blemish that would satisfy the anger of God towards our sinfulness.  He pleads for us in words that we can’t even imagine.  He takes our hand and leads us to the Heavenly throne.  What a wonderful image that is.  No more do we have to fear being in God’s presence.  The price has been paid and we have the inheritance of heaven itself.

Jesus is our advocate. When we find ourselves falling into our old ways, think of the price that was paid for the forgiveness of sins we should return to the One that gave us eternal life.  Thank God for His compassion – His love – His enduring consistency.  Though our world is in a constant state of flux, He remains the same.

So as Randy Stonehill wrote in his song, “Shut de do and kick outde debil.” Jesus has the power to keep it shut!

RESPECT FOR THE AGED DAY

3406672720_fcd99c2e16

I was surprised to discover that this is Respect for the Aged Day.  I was not surprised that this special day is celebrated in Japan, where honoring parents and the elderly is still held in high regard.

With the dawn of amazing medical care, people are living much longer and more productive lives well into their 70s, 80s and 90s, as long as their physical strength endures.  Sometimes we forget that they still have a great deal to contribute.  Once seniors have retired, doesn’t mean that lives are over.  Most of my close friends are over 70 and still very active in the work force – even trying to get computer savvy and keep up with the latest technology.

If you have the opportunity today – thank those who have experienced more of life than you have.  Appreciate all that they’ve done to motivate, inspire, encourage and teach you over the years.

It’s nice to hear that our Japanese friends still observe reverence for their elders by designating one day for this, but God commands to do this all the time.  I think the reason being that every human life on this planet has much to contribute – even into their later years in life.

Remember that you will be one of them sooner than you think.

HAPPY RESPECT FOR THE AGED DAY!

RIDING THE RAILS

ART BY PAUL BOECHER©

A homeless man sits on the curb tying his shoes. He straps his backpack and bedroll to his shoulders and walks beside the rails that have now become the path to his life. Who would think this still young man could find beauty and adventure in such a desolate, rundown place? Still, as the artist captures the light- the color – the detail, it’s easy to understand.

I COULD NEVER DENY MY JESUS!

Who would have thought one of Jesus disciples would betray him? How could those who followed Him and leaned on His every word, run away when things got tough? How could His rock solid Peter deny Him three times when He promised that he would do anything for his Lord including dying for Him?
It’s easy to sit back and judge these fellows for their inconsistent behavior, but we are often guilty of the same thing. When we set ourselves above others; when we don’t truly follow His plan for our lives; when we decide we know better than He does; when we don’t help and serve others out of love; when we pretend to be good people even though our thoughts and deeds are filled with ugliness – we are denying our Savior.
We’re as guilty as those who spat upon Him and mocked Jesus. We may think we’re doing everything right, but when push comes to shove, we can’t do any of it alone. Our sinful nature drives everything we do in life. That’s why we need His strength, His courage, His selflessness, His love and His hand guiding us through the road we’re traveling to heaven. He paid the price while we reap the benefits.

Help me, Lord to remember the trials and suffering you endured on my behalf. Forgive me for not always following your footsteps. When I am weak, you carry me. When I fall, you lift me up. My life will not be perfect until I get to my heavenly home, but I know that with you I can endure all things. Amen!

MY HERO

th

Young girls often have a vision of a knight in shining armor coming to rescue them from the villainy of an evil tyrant and carrying them off to a kingdom that is perfectly free from trouble and sadness.  As we grow up, we soon discover that those days of chivalry are long gone and that we may have to fight our own battles in life.

Today we see that thread being woven into the fabric of our lives with “reality” TV.  It’s in our nature to want perfection.  We want bodies free from wrinkles, flab and pain.  We want hair with full body and luster – some of us just want hair.   We want jobs that will supply a steady, comfortable living – some just crave a job to pay the bills.  We want healthy relationships, respect and success.

We often look in all the wrong places for these things.  Many times we look within ourselves and believe we can do it all alone. God’s plan for our future is so much easier. The time we spend on earth is just a moment in the greater scheme of things. He promises us, in 2 Timothy 4:18, “The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Lord, keep my eyes focused on you. You provide the answer for all my life’s problems. You are my onlytrue hero.

NO SMALL PARTS

part_to_whole

“Remember, there are no small parts, only small actors.” Constantin Stanislavsky

Where do you fit in to the scheme of things? I always tell my young performers that each of them is an important piece of the story we are trying to portray – without their participation, the story is incomplete, no matter how small the part may seem.

Each of us is part of something much bigger than we are. Consider how a business runs – or an orchestra  – or anything that involves multiple talents, you’ll see that each is involved in making an important contribution.

Some of us have great organizational skills while others are more inclined to handling  people management issues. Some folks have wonderful visual abilities and can create ideas just like that. Some are more capable with numbers or the mechanics of things.

What ever skill you have, don’t ever underestimate the importance of your part in the big picture. It’s up to you to discover where your talents lie and then  use them.

Do you know that God has a plan for each of us and He wants to partner with us to accomplish the work He has set before us?

We all have the same opportunities in life, whether we’re rich or poor. We can overcome adversity, disabilities, having dreams shattered. We can accomplish amazing things, but we can’t do it alone. As soon as we recognize that we are part of something other than ourselves, doors open – changes occur – relationships improve and all of this will draw us closer to the one who made it possible in the first place.

Walk with God and you’ll never walk alone.

HEAVEN IS MY HOME

Luke 23:43 (ESV) And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Those words were spoken by Jesus as He hung, beaten and bloody, as the main character on Good Friday. He was nearing his own death, but He knew the outcome and wasn’t afraid.

The man hanging on the cross beside Him knew Jesus was no ordinary man. That criminal was being crucified for some heinous crime, but in those last minutes of his life, he had the opportunity to ask for forgiveness and be assured that he would enter heaven with His Savior. I know that my death is imminent. I think about it a lot now that I’m in my golden years. I undoubtedly will be mourned by those I leave behind, but will soon become a distant memory as time goes by. I haven’t really prepared for that day. I don’t have a Will. I don’t have a written plan for my funeral, but I know I’m ready. Jesus extends that same promise to me and all sinners. We too can join Him in paradise if we just believe that He has paid the price and our sins are forgiven.

WHAT REALLY MATTERS

th3V5N1N8A

Today another of our law enforcement servants will be laid to rest and anger will rage over  a disease that’s spreading like wild fire in our nation.  While special interest groups, activists and politicians rant over the injustices going on in our country, it’s time for a call to God for intervention.

The United States has become great not only because of the hard work and sweat of its people, but because of its diversity and open door policy.  We were also founded Judeo/Christian values and the truth of God’s Word.

God’s people have a long history of turning away from Him and trying to do things in their own way with little success.  When we come back, we have His protection, His love, and His forgiveness.  Even when we abuse His teachings and follow the temptations of this world, He is like the father of the prodigal son, stretching out His loving arms for His returning child.  When we come to Him with repentance in our hearts there is no limit to what He will do for us.

It’s time for us to all get down on our knees and ask God to heal our country.   We’ve withstood enemies great and small.  We’ve overcome tremendous odds in rebuilding during times of crisis, but in the past few decades there’s been an insidious force at work to destroy us from within.

It doesn’t come from a terrorist nation – or from poverty – or from lack of leadership.  Our destruction has been orchestrated by the prince of hell himself.  We can’t let him win.  Our victory depends on us returning to the One True God.

Instead of rioting in the streets, protest marches, hate and destruction, let’s use the one tool at our disposal with the greatest clout.  God is our sure defense against Satan.  He has already defeated him.  The power of prayer is greater than any nuclear weapon – any strong armed enemy – any physical disaster – any amount of hatred or abuse – the devil himself.  The result of this simple act can move mountains and change hearts.

PRAY WITH ME THAT GOD WOULD HEAL OUR LAND!

THE OLD HOUSEBOAT

308242_1502260173522_612808172_n (2)

ART WORK BY PAUL BOECHER©

The old houseboat still maintained a look of elegance even though paint was chipped and faded – the bough battered slightly from constant pushing against shore,

She sat quietly moored under the wispy trees which lined the river – softly banging against the disintegrating pier,

How many years had passed since her maiden voyage?

How many months had slipped by since she cut stealthily through the rolling current?

She sits untouched – idle – lonely – forgotten – devoid of life.

Oh that the walls could speak and tell us of the days gone by.

Imagine the parties, the celebrations, the intimate, secret rendezvous.

Promises made and vows broken.  Lives changed for just a fleeting moment,

As she carried them downstream, washing their troubles away in an instant,

Did her life end when those who lived there did?  We’ll never know.

Only that she kisses the shoreline now instead of the waves.

CONNECTED

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The song “People” by Barbra Streisand relates the importance of being connected to others.

People who need people,
Are the luckiest people in the world
We’re children, needing other children
And yet letting a grown-up pride
Hide all the need inside
Acting more like children than children

There’s nothing like feeling connected.  When we’re born, our first glimpse of mom gives us peace.  As we go through life, we find joy in being part of a team.  When we’re older, it’s important to be able to bring something to the workplace that will add to the performance and success of that business.  When our tired old bodies feel useless, it’s good to receive a friendly hug or smile from someone.  We are not born to be alone.

“It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

During the last days of His ministry, Jesus assured His disciples with these wonderful words of promise.  “I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener.”  This is a word picture of how we’re interlocked with our God and Savior.  He refers to Himself as the vine – the sturdy base of the plant that supplies life to the fruit.  His Father tends to it and makes certain that the bad stuff is cut off from the good.

I love this imagery.  The vines of this world can tangle us up, choke us and devour us.  Weeds get into our world and corrupt it, infect it and bring about its death.  The true vine, Jesus, gives us eternal life – and even nourishes us here on earth preparing us for our days in heaven.

Thank you, Holy Father, for giving us your intermediary, Jesus.  Through Him we have a perfect connection to You.  Amen!
