I WON’T GROW UP!

quote-that-s-the-real-trouble-with-the-world-too-many-people-grow-up-they-forget-they-don-t-remember-walt-disney-224595

“Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” C. S. Lewis

Like Peter Pan, I’ve often thought of myself as the proverbial child.  The thought of growing old was never appealing. Doing childish things wasn’t a choice, it was an obligation.  In so doing, I never really did grow up.  I try finding the joy in the silly things.  I stand tall even when my weary frame is folding.  I put on a happy face when my heart is full of tears.  A Pollyanna sort of philosophy, I guess.  However, aging is truly over-rated.

I was reminded of that yesterday as I had the opportunity to sit in on a rehearsal of young actors.  When I revealed my age, there were sighs of wonder and amazement.  How did I live this long?  How could I still be moving on my own effort? It got me thinking about how much I need the energy of young people to keep me energized.

When we reach these elder years of life, it’s easy to sit in a recliner and watch the world slip into oblivion. The road less traveled becomes appealing. The quiet moments and times of solitude are fine for a while, but then what?  More quiet moments, leading to more inactivity, resulting in lack of enthusiasm and zest for living.

I have been “officially retired” for a year now.  It’s easy to see a pattern within my life.  I don’t consider myself to be a workaholic, but I am not one to shirk work either.  I’ve discovered over this past year that I cannot not work.  I was raised with a strong work ethic.  I learned in my marriage that one has to work hard to succeed and survive. I’ve discovered through raising a family, that I’m not the important one in my life and that doesn’t bother me.  I love seeing others flourish and grow.  If I can be an element in that growth, I’ve gained more than they have.

God gives each of us gifts to use throughout our lives – even when we feel we may no longer serve a purpose – even when our bones creak, our voices crack, our skin wrinkles and most of our bulk is now hanging down around  the waist and hips.  As long as we have life – a long as breath is surging through our nostrils – as long as God allows us time on this planet – we have a job to do.

We don’t have to grow up.  Life can be a blast if we allow it to be, or it can become drudgery if we let it.  When we think that way, we need to start thinking like children again.

GOALS

untitled

Mondays are great for setting new goals, fulfilling old ones and just starting over.  Maybe you failed at that diet you promised to stay on last week – try again.  I’ve tried this for 75 years and it still doesn’t work.  You may have decided to start something new – like write a novel, an article, a blog, a sentence, a word – do it.  Mondays are like do over days.  Personally I never was very good at to-do lists.  I much prefer the Pink Panther’s rendition.

There’s nothing wrong with setting goals and planning for the future.  In fact, God recommends it.

Luke 14:28 “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?”

Unfortunately we often fall short of those blueprints and things don’t work out as they should.  That’s where He comes in with His unfailing promise to help.

Proverbs 16:9 “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

Instead of waiting to see if our plans are carried out, it might be good to start with God as the organizer of the plan.  Here’s a list for starting a new week – a new day – or a new way of thinking:

  • Find time to listen to someone.  Get to know them and show them that you’re interested in them.
  • Look for the best in others, even if you don’t always agree.  Try to understand why someone cut you off on the highway, rather than assuming he’s a jerk.
  • Share something – a good book, a funny joke,  smile, your time.
  • Tell someone why you love Jesus – how much He loves the world.
  • Turn over the tough stuff to God.
  • Spend time reading God’s message to you through His Word.
  • Put others needs before your own.
  • Remember that God is with you.  When things get really difficult, He will be there to carry you.
  • Do your best, know that you can do even better, try, don’t give up.
  • Pray.

Don’t wait until next Monday.  Start today!

COLLAGE

SOME OF THE MANY FACES OF KATHY IN PERFORMANCE OVER THE YEARS.

We all have many faces in this world.  For me, I’m a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, writer, actress, clown, encourager, and a lots more.  We often don’t change physically – like I’ve done in the many roles played during my lifetime, but to be good at your craft, you must learn everything you can about your character- how they live, what the script says about him, how he responds to obstacles and things we naturally go through in life.

Often it’s easier to hide behind a mask when we don’t know how to handle things.  We don a façade which seems to make life a little easier temporarily.  Hiding means that you eventually have to reveal yourself at some point and that isn’t easy for most of us. We feel comfortable or safe within the confines of our disguise.

God is aware of all our secrets – our thoughts, our desires, our dreams, our inspiration, our sins.  His omnipotence can be scary at times.  To think that someone has their eye on you every second of every day is somewhat daunting, but on the other hand, it’s very comforting as well.

God loves everyone.  His creation is of the utmost to Him.  When we stray, He’s there to pick up the pieces.  When we try to do things on our own, He shows us how much we really need Him.  When we try to reason our way through scriptures, life or the turmoil that surrounds us, we become frustrated and hopeless.  When we trust in His power and care for us, it’s really a no-brainer.  His eye is on the smallest of his creation as well as the biggest.

Don’t try to hide.  He will find you.  Not because he’s tracking you down for judgment, but because He loves you and wants you to love Him back.

THE LOVE OF JESUS

painting-picture-image-jesus-christ-love

My mother was a special woman in so many ways. For one thing she had to put up with my father, my sister and myself. That in itself, showed great fortitude. She and my dad lived a fairly meager life, but they managed to scrape up enough money to give my sister and me a Christian education.  It was important to both of them that we be grounded in the faith.

In her later years, mom felt sad that she didn’t “know enough” about religion. I have no doubt that my mom had more “knowledge” regarding faith than she ever realized. She lived it through her love and compassion of others. She made no distinction when it came to sharing herself. Her childlike faith, made her precisely the kind of person that God calls to heaven.

Sometimes I think we believe we have to be theological scholars or ones who have struggled greatly in our lives, to witness to Jesus’ love.  Those things do not win us a place in heaven.  Jesus is the only way to receive freedom from the captivity of sin.

My mom was convinced of that until her dying day.  When she finally reached the final moment of submission to death, I could tell by the look in her eyes that she had received the promise of heaven.

Whenever I hear a sermon about stewardship I think of her. We don’t need theological degrees to spread God’s love to others. There’s a hymn that sums it up.

If you cannot speak like angels, If you cannot preach like Paul,
You can tell the love of Jesus, you can say He died for all.
If you cannot rouse the wicked with the Judgment’s dread alarms,
You can lead the little children to the Savior’s waiting arms

JUST ASK HIM …

5af20b797d3fe3a98038335120cf93c5

Last night, as I restlessly made it through the night, my mind slipped in and out of prayer.  I’ve been battling a virus that won’t give up and causes coughing streaks that interrupt anything going on around me. I guess I was feeling sorry for myself, but then I realized that maybe I wasn’t praying for the right thing.  Maybe I was being selfish.  There certainly are more important things in this crazy world to pray for.

Our country has been devastated with storms, earthquakes and fires.  The financial losses are great and it will take a long time to fix things.  Each day we’re thrown another brick of insanity in the way our world rides a fast train to hell. Morality is on a steady decline.  Churches are losing members quickly.  Modifications are made to bring them back, which puts them in even more peril.

Our young people have been left with a heap of ashes to clean up.  They’ll be saddled with college debt.  Jobs they hoped to make a living at will not be available.  Fixing a society that has declined because of sin is going to take more than a few years. Have we set a good example for them?

What good will my prayers do?  My words are as meaningless as the words Solomon prayed, and yet God in His love for us, invites us to bring our troubles to Him and promises answers.  The answers may not happen immediately or in a way that we want, but they will be answered for our benefit.  God seems to know better than us in that area.

Like a good father, he wants us to communicate with Him.  Nothing is too great or too small.  He simply wants us to talk to Him.  Because of His great mercy, He will hear us and put things in place to answer our supplications.  We may think our requests are insignificant, but God has our best interests at heart and can accomplish great things because of it.

Open your hearts today and lift your voice to the God of the universe.  He can do anything.  He knows what we need before we open our mouths.  He answers in His own way, so that we know He is in control.  He has His finger on the pulse of every human being that inhabits the earth and His mind is filled with ideas to perform miracles – even for the smallest of requests.  Oh, and if you want a little one on one communication – open your Bible.  His words are right there.  Amen!

POWER OF WORDS

rPresentación1

I don’t speak anything other than English, even though I took a couple years of Latin in high school a hundred years ago.  I did find those classes helpful in deciphering the meanings of many words in Webster’s Dictionary, because Latin was one of the first languages and everything has to have a beginning.

English happens to be one of the most complicated on the planet.  In preparing for this post, I had to look up the meaning for homonym, homograph and homophone.  Even the definition is complex -because they mean much the same.  A homophone is a word that sounds similar, usually isn’t spelled the same and has a different meaning – stairs/stares. A homograph is a group or pair of words which is spelled the same, but have a different meaning – heir/air.  A homonym is spelled the same, but may have multiple meanings – suit yourself/wear a suit.

All of that is enough to confuse the most masterful wordsmith.  Perhaps that’s why I didn’t do well in English.  Add to this confusion words like homophobe, homocentric, homosexual and homogeneous and you open a whole new can of worms.  The Greek root word for homo means “same”.  That might clear things up a bit.

Words can create such wild visions in the mind of a child – hey, they can do the same for an old lady too.  For example the difference in gorilla and guerilla had “young me” conjuring up thoughts of giant apes with AK47s running around the battlefield.  The Marine Corps and Marine Corpse took on a whole different meaning, when our last president mixed up the word.

My husband had an employee who often used the wrong word.  Apparently he didn’t do well in English either when he referred to a driver who was driving erotically down the road.  I had a student that referred  to me as “commanding” rather than “demanding, but he could’ve been right in his description either way.

When my youngest daughter pointed to her chest one day and said she had a pain in her scrotum, the entire family erupted in laughter – something that continues to haunt her.

I am reminded of the sage words of my grandmother as she advised, “don’t sit on concrete.  You’ll get piles.”  Piles of what, I wondered.  I had nightmares about mountainous cement growths coming out of my back side.  Of course anyone who has experience the pain of hemorrhoids would probably agree to the concept completely.

Words we use to reprimand our children can alter the way they think about things.  I have told my children 100,000 times to do something, but who was counting? I rebuked them when they didn’t clean their plates, as children in other countries were starving.  How would their cleaning their plates keep those other kids from starving? Or if your best friend jumped off a bridge, would you? Come on, people.  Let’s give our kids some credit.

Words can move people to action.  They can inspire, encourage and amuse. They can hurt and emotionally scar as well.  When we use them, we must be careful.  As writers, we have an extra obligation to use them with the utmost consideration.  The tongue can be the strongest member in the human body.  The pen can be even stronger.

EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER

sometimes-i-just-want-someone-to-hug-me-and-say-i-understand-your-pain-its-going-to-be-okay-heres-a-coffee-and-two-million-dollars-ecdfb

Yesterday was one of those days.  I started by reading blogs of my friends and began to tear up.  I hit upon one that set the floodgates into full throttle and it took me half the day to pull myself together.

Sometimes our emotions do that to us.  We go along quietly, living life normally and then something hits us like a ton of bricks. It reminded me of my first encounters with emotional ups and downs when I became an adolescent. Those years should be eliminated altogether, but then again, God knows what He’s doing.

When I was a teenager, there wasn’t such a thing as sex education in the classroom.  It was part of the stuff that parents are supposed to deal with in preparation for their child’s puberty.  My mother took the first step, by purchasing a book.  She never had a chance to give it to me, because my dad (an avid reader) snatched it up first.  I never quite understood why he had to read the book.  Didn’t he know the facts of life, or was it that he didn’t want to miss anything when he explained it to me?  He never actually went through the book with me – simply handed to me and told me to read it.

The book was filled with pictures of fallopian tubes and little spermy things floating up those tubes to fertilize eggs.  The entire thing was completely disgusting to me so I put the book on the shelf, in case dad wanted to refer to it again.  I then decided I’d find out on my own what all this stuff was about, and asked my friends what they knew.

My dad, bless his soul, was totally involved in his two daughters’ lives – much to our chagrin.  He even dragged me to a gynecologist and embarrassed the heck out of me by asking why I was having such difficulty with my period.  I was never quite so humiliated again in my life.

Women have the pleasure of being the recipients of these roller coaster rides more times then should be necessary.  There are the highs and lows during pregnancy, child rearing, menopause and the years of aging, when everything falls apart.

The circle of life isn’t easy.  Just imagine how sublime it would’ve been for all of us, had Eve not taken a bite out of that fruit.  Or if Adam would’ve manned up and steered her away from the temptation.  In the meantime, until we get to the other side of heaven, we cry, we laugh, we worry, we fret, because we are women, and it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure that one out.

OUT OF THIS WORLD

thMI3054IX

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”  John 18:36

He lived a lifetime in only thirty three years.  He walked the rugged terrain of deserts and country roads.  He recruited fishermen and tax collectors to be part of his mission. Word of His miracles spread like wild fire across a land devastated by poverty and oppression.  He healed the sick and gave life back to the dead.  He restored souls, gave hope, promised eternity to all and completed the work assigned Him by His Father, God.

All of this in thirty three years.

As we look at the world we live in today, we wonder what’s happened in the last two thousand years.  The world continues to be reft with poverty.  We can’t turn around without seeing the results of hatred, violence and broken minds and hearts.  Mental illness is at an all time high.  Men of thirty three are confused about their role in the family.  They struggle with their identity, because of what the world tells them they should be. Everything has turned upside down.

What is this world to us?  We’re born into existence, not by our own choice.  We don’t choose our parents.  We don’t choose our circumstances.  We have little say in what our future holds.  The only thing we can be sure of, is that life will end one day – in this world.

Still, the Son of God left his heavenly throne, two thousand years ago.  He submitted himself to the painful birthing process; calloused his hands as He worked alongside His stepfather; witnessed the plight of His fellow man and His own people; studied the scriptures (which He wrote) and was tempted in every way, but never sinned.  When it was all over and He drew His final breath He uttered these words, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”

He returned to His rightful place in Heaven and assures us of the same destiny.  When this veil of tears ends for us, it’s just the beginning of an eternity in paradise.  This is what He wanted for us in the first place.

What have you done with the last thirty three years of your life?
