BE NEAR ME, LORD, JESUS

thNIHEUFN6

Is it over?  The trash cans line the streets for weekly pickup and they’re stuffed with discarded wrapping paper, empty boxes, leftovers from massive overindulgence, ready to be hauled off to the city dump and crushed into a dlandfill. Is this what’s left of Christmas?  People hit the shopping malls to return unwanted or improperly sized clothing – redeem gift cards- pick up some bargains on seasonal things.  Is this all there is?  The carols have been returned to the music shelves – the classic Christmas movies have been replace with science fiction and action/adventure – the state of the world returns from a short hiatus of fake news and continues as usual.  Has Christmas made a difference?

One of my favorite Christmas carols is “Away in a Manger,” because the essence of that tiny human being – so helpless and meek – yet powerful, almighty, God. There is no way to wrap my mind around that concept.  A child will lead us?  A little boy, born into poverty and oppression had left His throne in heaven to pay the only price to relieve us of all our sins?

In the third verse of that precious hymn, we ask the Lord to be near us.  This is a prayer we can count on being answered, because of the love our God has for us, in spite of our darkened hearts .

The holiday can cause one of the greatest let downs after it’s over or it can be the new beginning we’ve all longingly waited for.  We still think we control our lives.  We look at what we’ve accomplished and not what God does through us.  We trust in others to govern us – to teach us – to do for us.  Why is it so difficult for us to believe that there is someone far greater  who is in complete control of our destiny?

Jesus associated with the scum of the earth and then died a pitiful death as a common criminal on a cross.  What could a man like that do for us? He came in deep humility to be the perfect sacrifice.  He lived in poverty to remind us that His kingdom was not of this world.  We still have that hope to look forward to.  In the meantime, we can be confident that our dear, Lord, Jesus will be near us, not just during Christmas, but forever.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay

Close by me forever, and love me I pray

Bless all the dear children, in Thy tender care

And fit us for heaven, to live with Thee there.

PEACE CAME TO EARTH

Peace-Came-to-Earth_web.jpg

We travel this life talking to, relying on and trusting God, but the thought of actually meeting Him face to face is often inconceivable.  God loves us so much that He took on human flesh – went through the trauma of passing through the birth canal – was born of a woman, but conceived by God Himself.  He was born in the usual way so that He could experience the entire human condition.  He walked through life, worked, ached physically, hands calloused, temptations placed before Him, wept, got angry and felt every emotion we feel.  He was indeed a man, but also God.

Imagine Mary and Joseph as they tended the little newborn baby boy.  What must have been going through their minds?  Here was the fulfillment of the prophets of old – the Messiah they had waited for – a king, but yet a humble man.  Encased in this mortal body, was a sinless heart.  As He meekly suffered pain and death He carried the sins of the world on His shoulders.

Had He not been born, suffered and died, God would been hidden from man forever.  On that Christmas morning, Mary, Joseph and the shepherds were witness to the actual face of God.  Later the Magi and others would see Him too.  What a miracle!  What joy!  Peace came to earth in that lowly baby, Jesus.

We sang this hymn on Christmas Eve and it beautifully talks about the wonder of that first Christmas

PEACE CAME TO EARTH BY Jaroslav J. Vajda

Peace came to earth at last that chosen night

When angels clove the sky with song and light

And God embodied love and sheathed his might,

Who could but gasp,  Immanuel

Who could but sing, Immanuel.

And who could be the same for having held

The infant in their arms and later felt

The wounded hands and side, all doubts dispelled,

Who could but sigh, Immanuel

Who could but shout, Immanuel

You show the Father none has ever seen,

In flesh and blood you bore our griefs and pain

In bread and wine you visit us again

Who could but see, Immanuel

Who could but thrill, Immanuel

How else could I have known you, O my God!

How else could I have loved you, O my God!

How else could I embrace you, O my God!

Who could but pray, Immanuel

Who could but praise, Immanuel

Christmas has come and gone, but let the thought of God with us – Immanuel – remain in our hearts forever.  He alone brings us true peace.

There’s nothing better than being together at Christmas.  Wait a minute – there is something better – knowing that we will all live eternally together in heaven.  Because of the greatest gift that God sent to redeem us, we have that promise. Merry Christmas from my family to yours.

COME, LORD, JESUS!

WOOD SCULPTURE “MOTHER & CHILD” BY PAUL BOECHER – POETRY BY KATHY BOECHER©

He didn’t come in glory on that first Christmas Day.
His palace was a lowly place. His bed was made of hay.
His servants were the angels, the shepherds came to pray.
The Magi came from far away their richest gifts for to lay.
He will return to judge the world, in glory beyond measure.
His promises will be fulfilled. He is our greatest treasure.

LIGHTS UP

Christmas-lights-in-Australia-2013

Oh the weather outside is frightful  . . . well, actually the temperatures are dropping and soon will be in the normal range for this time of year in Minnesota.  There’s some white stuff on the ground, but we were spared getting totally dumped on, like some of our friends and relatives in the south.

This is the time of year we expect the weather to cool down.  So far, we’ve had a pretty easy winter.  I shouldn’t say that too loud, for fear of a massive blizzard heading our way.  Having a little snow on the ground, creates a Christmas card image and makes it feel more like the holiday is almost upon us.  I’ve done a fair amount of baking. My tree is up and decorated and the house looks very festive.

When we take all the trimmings down in January, things will return to a somewhat drab looking house.  Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just leave it all up for the whole year?  We wouldn’t have to go through the setting up and taking down that encompasses the season.  It would be great for old folks like us too – who find it ore and more difficult to carry out these traditions each year.

I love the lights, the glitter and shine of this season.  Each light is just a fraction of the light that appeared in the sky when our Savior was born.  That star shone brightly in the fields not far from Bethlehem and guided the shepherds to the stable where Jesus lay.  It was a light like none ever seen before.  Magnify all the Christmas lights you see in the big cities of our country by a billion and it might slightly resemble the light those shepherds saw.  That same star guided the wise men across many miles to worship the Savior, King.

The lights outside my home are going through some issues this year.  Sometimes they burn steadily and then they decide to dance off and on for some reason.  I guess I can blame it on some electrical glitch.  Maybe it’s simply the way things are in life.  We go our own way, do our own thing and then realize there’s a better way.

When that first Christmas star appeared, there were no glitches – no breakdowns – only perfection.  As we prepare for the Light of the World, it can be seen within a little child, resting in His mother’s arms – a light that will never dim – a light that covers the entire planet with hope and redemption – a light that can fill our hearts and prepare us for the paradise God has planned for us – a light that will live within us throughout eternity.  Let your light shine!

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

Spinning out of control,

Dropping to depths below,

Falling into the unknown

Unsure, lost, alone,

darkness surrounds you,

There is nothing you can do,

Nothing,

Nothing!

Stop fighting,

Let go,

Relax,

Trust.

Reach out your hands

To the Savior of the world,

He will catch you,

He will hold you,

He will love you like no other,

Trust,

Do not be afraid.

FEAR NOT!

fear-not

“The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be.”  Anne Frank

You’re alone in your home, minding your own business, when out of the blue, an angel appears and tells you not to be afraid.  You’re in the field, tending the flocks, when suddenly a host of angels appears along with a brilliant light in the sky and speak, “Fear not!”  You’re in bed trying to make sense of the happenings of the day.  Your heart is filled with anxiety and worry, but an angel comes in your dreams and tells you that all is well.  You have nothing to fear.

All of these examples of God’s presence in our times of greatest need, seemed to be at the centerpiece of the Christmas story.  Angels, heavenly hosts, the Son of God and the comforting message of redemption were designed to get us through the most difficult situations in life.  When the angels said, “Do not be afraid,” it was for a number of reasons.  Heavenly apparitions are certainly not common.  Imagine if only one showed up at your front door.  Of course we’d be frightened.  Seeing such a sight would send fear raging through our veins.  The angels were in fact preparing those they were visiting, for an amazing event.

There’s more to it than physical fear however.  When we’re being told to not be afraid, God is speaking directly to us, through His Word, to comfort us and give us courage to move forward.  He’s assuring us that He is with us and He will carry us through any situation.

The Christmas angels had a most wonderful message for the world.  The ravages of sin would no more hang over our heads.  The promised Messiah, which God spoke of in the Garden of Eden, had come to crush every sin – past, present and future.  Knowing that the fulfillment of those words was now coming to fruition, would be and is God’s will being accomplished for us.

Sure, we’ll continue to be afraid in our lives.  There will be times when we don’t think we’ll make it through another day.  The devil and his minions still comb the earth for those who would join them in hell.  Misery loves company.  When we wear the armor of God, there is no need to fear.  The price for our redemption has been paid.  We can look forward to an eternity in heaven.  We can rely on God’s word to us -“Do not be afraid, for I am with you.”

HOPE LIES IN A MANGER

It’s easy to see why we need someone to rescue us from the ugliness which has invaded the world.  Identity theft has run amok – human slavery still exists as children are sold into prostitution – morality is at an all time low –  everything except the One True God is worshipped – the criminals are now heroes and the heroes are crooks.  Lives are spent fighting ongoing wars – lives are cut short before they have a chance to breathe, because they might prove an inconvenience – aging lives are shortened for the same reason.  How is it possible to survive where it seems there is no peace – no love – no hope?

We need a Savior not because we deserve it, but because we have turned so far away from what God wants and expects from us.  Our lives are increasingly being covered with scum and depravity – hunger and homelessness in a land of plenty.   It didn’t just happen over night.  It has insidiously maneuvered its way into our lifestyle, our civilization, our homes, even our churches.

We could give up.  We could let the world devour us, but God’s Word tells us that the wages of sin is death – a death of eternal pain and suffering.  We don’t have the means to buy our way out.  There is no amount of human knowledge, wisdom or strength to cover the cost.  The only way for us to escape is through our Savior, Jesus, Christ.

Is there hope in this disgusting, sinful world?  No!  It comes as a free gift from God when His own flesh and blood died to set us free – to pay the ransom  we could never pay – and conquer death to show us that we would receive eternal life through Him – eternal life in paradise.

He came once as a lowly baby in an animal stall.  His mother laid Him in a manger.  Our Savior will return again to take us to heaven. When He returns, it will be in great majesty as our King of Kings.  Come quickly, Lord, Jesus!

HANDCRAFTED TREASURES

576523_2537654097723_2097454900_n

ART & INSPIRATION FROM PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

Over a number of years, my husband carved each of these Santas from a chunk of wood and gifted them to me.  When we moved last year, those Santas were individually wrapped, gently packed into a box and we haven’t seen them since.  Of course Santa isn’t the focus of our Christmas celebration, but somehow not having them on display in our new “old” house is kind of sad.

I know the box is somewhere.  It’s either stacked in the attic of our garage, or tucked away within a closet inside the house.  Each one of these little statues resembles the artist somewhat.  There’s one that’s shaped like a pickle and another looks like a hot pepper.   They each have their own personality.  This is our second Christmas in our new old house and I find myself really missing those guys.

When the warmer weather returns, we’ll begin in earnest to look for them.  Who knows what other treasures we may find.  Maybe next Christmas, we can display them again.  The important thing is that we can tuck away memories, but the true meaning of Christmas and the bounty of God’s love for us has only one place to reside and that’s within our hearts.

PEACE ON EARTH

thHSS0W1X2

The world was a much smaller place than it is today, when Jesus was born in the tiny town of Bethlehem.  In fact a geographer named, Strabo had mapped out as much of it as he possibly could at the time.  There were many unknowns.  The world had not yet fully been explored, so the boundaries were limitless.

The place in which our Savior was born of a virgin mother, was insignificant.  Had it not been for the hustle and bustle of the mandated census, there would only be a handful of people there that night.  Instead, every room was full and the young couple would have to sleep with the animals.  Mary would give birth to the Son of God, in that place.  It wasn’t a royal palace, with midwives on hand.  There were no servants to comfort her, only the encouraging words of Joseph. There were no royal robes or blankets of velvet to cuddle the newborn – only the torn strips of cloth that would tightly bind the child and keep Him warm.

All of Israel was under Roman rule.  The age of Judean kings was long past.  It had actually been four centuries since God had spoken to His people.  As Judaism moved forward without divine guidance,  four sects developed – the Pharisees followed the traditions of the past; the Sadducees opposed legalism and followed Mosaic law; the Essenes were considered the scribes who penned and preserved the Dead Sea Scrolls and prayed that God would lead them out of Roman oppression; the Zealots were a group dedicated to gaining their freedom from Rome through acts of violence.

The religion of King David had become fractured.  Poverty ruled the land.  There were no middle class citizens, just the rich and the poor.  Unrest on all sides seemed to be the fare of the day.  Riots were prevalent.  Unrest was rampant.  It was a time of darkness and desperation. The time was right for a Savior to come and bring relief to the people.

Today, we’ve turned Christmas into a commercial nightmare.  Even though we live in a free country, we’re often held captive by the circumstances surrounding us.  We waiver in our faith.  We become disappointed with each other.  We lose sight of our journey on this planet and focus more on what we can get out of it.  There continue to be protests, rioting and violence in our streets.  The focus on political correctness and sexual harassment has everyone on edge.  There’s a ginormous desire for relief and many turn to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain.

The time is again right for a savior.  It’s always the right time for Jesus to come into our hearts.  He knows our needs.  He comforts our spirits.  He leads us out of temptation and provides answers for us.  He lifts us up when we feel lost or unforgiven.  He carries our burdens, so we don’t have to.

There will never be a true peace on earth, but for one moment in history, a little boy sleeping on a mound of hay, became the peace we all long for.  God came to live among humanity – to experience our pain and sorrow – to laugh with us – to share with us – to lay down His life for us, because of His unconditional love.  Because of this we will enjoy eternal peace!
