Me with one of the very important Oompa Loompas, before the last show yesterday.

For the past few months, I’ve been working as stage manager for a children’s theater production of Willy Wonka, Jr.  The last show of fourteen performances, was completed last night to a standing ovation. It’s always difficult to say goodbye to a show.  It’s been a part of your life for a good portion of time.  You’ve made some amazing friendships. You learn what teamwork is all about.  You discover talents that you never knew existed.

Live theater is so exciting, because you’re never sure what will happen.  Things can change in an instant.  This isn’t just true for children.  I remember a time when I was performing in a melodrama and the girl who played my daughter, lost her skirt.  It simply fell off, right on stage.  I told her to pull herself together and we went on with the show.

In the many productions I’ve directed over the years, I’ve had children lose their voices, become sick onstage, have stage fright and completely blank out, pee while singing a solo, and numerous other interesting situations.  When the unexpected happens, we often panic, but sometimes it’s just better to go with the flow.

I had been on a hiatus of about a year – in retirement, so to speak.  However, after a year of no interaction with children, I went into a sort of withdrawal.  When your life is saturated with teaching, it becomes a part of who you are – your identity in a way.

It’s amazing how God intricately weaves the tapestries of our lives.  Out of nowhere, I heard about a little children’s theater company very close to my home.  At about the same time, my husband found an art center, within walking distance.  Neither one of us is ready for total retirement.  We are aging, but we can still think, pass on our years of experience and do what we love doing for the rest of our lives.

I thank God for leading me in this direction once more.  I’ve found a new home at Northern Starz Children’s Theatre and I’m raring to get onto the next project.  Now, however, I’m going to take a long nap before Christmas arrives.

CRYING OUT

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL T. & KATHY BOECHER

A ghostly darkness weaves its way through the forest of your mind,

Creating shadows as it dispenses a feeling of hopelessness,

The murkiness envelops you with a brazen embrace,

Leaving you breathless,

Frightened,

Alone,

Betrayed,

Overcome,

But even in those darkest moments,

When you feel the world is on a downward spiral,

When hatred,

Fear,

Prejudice,Overtake your inmost thoughts,

God is there,

He is the source of the hidden light

That leads us back to Him.

Turn away from the ghosts of this world,

Look to Him for relief,

He will take away all fear,

Dispel all sadness,

Give us eternal hope.

FIRST OR LAST?

star-wars-the-last-jedi-gadgetreport_ro_

It seems that every other year, another Star Wars movie comes out, claiming to be the last one. Of course this is one of those classics that will probably will go on to infinity and beyond.  The latest, “The Last Jedi,” was recently released.  I’m not a real Star Wars fan, and truthfully only saw the first one.  I enjoyed the amusing characters and the action packed space antics, but it’s never been on my best ever movie picks.

I love fantasy.  I think God has given us the ability to use our imaginations to follow our dreams, to be creative, to enjoy the unknown, to invent and explore things that need exploration.  I wonder though, when we turn our thoughts totally to those things, how we are dishonoring the Creator who made all things.

The focus for Christians at this time of year, is a tiny child, born in poverty, living in a stable,  Son of God yet Son of man.  This baby had submitted Himself to the trauma of childbirth.  He went through the entire nine month process of developing within the womb of Mary. He gave up His throne in heaven and came to live among us.  He felt all the same emotions, pain, joys and anxious moments that we’ve experienced, yet He never fell into sin.  He was the final sacrifice – the lamb without blemish – the One who came to take on our sin and die for us.  He then conquered death and Satan so that we could enjoy the blessings of heaven.  Sounds like a FORCE greater than any I’ve ever heard of before.

The Star Wars movies have great appeal for those looking for an escape from the perils of every day living.  We grow tired of politics, sexual harassment and abuse, terrorism, violence.  Instead of searching for the true FORCE, we turn to a fantastical galaxy, where light sabers abound.

It’s apparent that the world is hungry for answers.  They’re tired of  politics, race discrimination, political correctness, terrorism, crime, sex and violence.  However, church attendance is declining and more and more unstable behavior grows.

When things spin out of control, Americans are turning further away from the truth – looking for happiness and freedom in a place very much like the world we live in today.  There’s a war waging on the screen, between the dark side and all its evil and those who do the right things.  We tend to lean towards worldly things, rather than relying on the truth of God’s Word.  God is the only One who holds the force within His fingertips.  He can make mountains collapse, valleys rise up, waters recede and flow.  Yet many find that notion ridiculous and opt for something else to save them.

The appeal of “Star Wars” is kind of an escape from reality, but for those who really want answers for the ugliness of sin, the true Savior of the world is waiting in a humble stable – in a bed of straw – surrounded by the lowliest members of the work force of the day – being cuddled by His mother as cows and sheep sing Him to sleep. This Savior has no dark side.   Because of Him, our salvation is guaranteed.

Maybe it’s time to start searching Him out again.  May the FORCE be with you.

THE GREATEST STORY EVERY TOLD

One of the things young actors learn about performing is the importance of an audience. In live theater you never know what kind of response you’ll get until it happens and each time it’s performed the audience reaction can be different.

In the drama that has unfolded over these past few weeks of Advent, the characters have been introduced – the stage set – all the important messages  have been expounded upon and now it’s time to present it  to the largest crowd known in the history of man.  How will it be received?  Will folks look at it as just another fable?  Will it have any relevance in their own lives?  Will they take it to heart and tell others about it?

The Christmas story has been portrayed in many different ways over the centuries.  I think there are two main reasons it has had such a long run.  First of all, it’s a true story.  It really happened!  I know this because God inspired men to write about it through His Holy Spirit.  It has stood the test of time.  Even though Christmas is slowly getting shrouded by commercialism – the plot never changes and it still commands an audience.

Secondly, it’s the greatest love story ever told.  It shows us how much God loves us – how He arranged for our redemption – how He came to us in the flesh and became like us (only perfect) – how He was subjected to humiliation, scorn and died a horrific death – and how He conquered death and rose again, just as we will after our death,

The curtain is about to go up again in a week.  We are the audience.  Will we receive it with rave reviews or turn it aside?  Trust me, this is the best ticket in the world.  If you believe by faith, you’ll find that this simple story has an amazing ending!

TURN ON THE LIGHTS

c63c059800108c86973b1fb993462c0d

Out of the depths of my transgression, my heart screams for relief.

I grumble – I complain – I even blame God for my shortcomings.

How dare I challenge the Creator of heaven and earth?

Who do I think I am that I can question the One who molded me in my mother’s body?

I am but a worm – an insignificant gnat who persists and bothers.

In my distress a quiet voice reaches my ears. It tells me not to be afraid.

The voice is comforting and for a moment I let myself be soothed by its gentle caress.

Again I stumble. My feet cannot follow all the regulations for my life.

My hands feel useless. My heart is empty. I lose hope.

Again He whispers, “Do not be afraid.”

It is like the spinning of a revolving door – in and out of belief – around and around,

Spinning, falling, helplessly, hopelessly. From the darkest part of my existence

He comes to me again – “Do not be afraid” – He lifts me and carries me to safety.

He is the Light of the world – I rest in the strong arms of my Savior. Jesus!

THE PAUSE THAT REFRESHES

f83df232a0908ac0dce7acf274afec87.jpg

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could hit the pause button and stop the world for a time?  Some days are more chaotic than others, but at this time of the year we all need to slow down and take a deep breath.

We’re faced with news of terror in the world by an evil group of radicals that are intent on conquering the infidels.  Our city streets are cluttered with crime and violence that never ends.  Our homes are nothing like the Father Knows Best or Leave it to Beaver of old.  Now single parents raise children and fight to survive, often causing children to grow up much faster than they should.

There is no longer a middle class.  You’re either rich or poor.  Entitlement has all but eliminated the desire to fulfill the American Dream.  Government has invaded every area of our lives beginning at our birth (and conception) to our death. Political correctness has become so much a part of our vocabulary that there’s bound to be something that will  offend someone.  God has all but been eliminated from our conversation as a nation.  Peace is something you must obtain by taking a pill or meditating.

Hit the pause button.  Stop – listen to the beautiful message from God.  He has delivered a Savior – a redeemer – a comforter – a king.  He is exactly what we need right now.  He lived a perfect life, bTHE ut still had human flesh.  He lived in poverty, but had a loving family and was schooled in God’s Word.  He learned a trade, got hungry and tired, but still was God and King of the universe.  He suffered humiliation and pitiful scars, so that we could be heirs of His kingdom.  He conquered death and lives and reigns on the throne of God.

Life doesn’t have to fill our hearts with frustration, fear, anxiety, pain.  We have the most perfect peace through the promise that He will return again to judge the world.  Come quickly, Lord, Jesus.

IT’S GOOD TO BE THE QUEEN!

a99a5000526839d399069f5338740ddf

Every young girl dreams of becoming a princess. When my sister and I were young, we’d pretend to be royals every night in the room we shared.  We were supposed to be sleeping, but instead we’d have the sheets wrapped around us as our royal robes. We’d imagine ourselves dancing at the ball and having beautiful crowns placed upon our heads.  Of course I was first to become the queen, because I was the oldest.  I was also the most spoiled.

It’s easy to  pretend that we’ve been born into a royal family and that all our needs are attended to.  Every meal has been prepared to our liking and our clothes the best money can buy.  In the real world, we have to work for the things we need and want and those things don’t always come easy.  Many times we do without them so that we can simply survive.

Jesus didn’t have to leave His royal throne behind and become a child born into poverty.  He didn’t have to suffer humiliation and a horrible death, but He did, because it was the only way for us to survive.  His kingdom includes all the heavenly realms and everything in the entire universe, but He gave it all up so that we could become part of the royal family of God.  We’ve all become His princes and princesses through the sacrifice He made for us.

In this world there will be strife and trouble.  Reality is not beautiful.  It’s not covered with gems and royal garb for most of us.  We often have to be crushed before we can see the glory of the true wealth we’ve possessed right from the beginning of our existence.

My dream of being a princess didn’t always take the path I wanted to go, but I know that I have a crown waiting for me in heaven – one purchased with the blood of my heavenly prince.

PINTEREST PERFECT?

crazy-christmas

You’ve hung the holiday lights and your yard resembles a Currier & Ives painting.  The entrance to your home is filled with wonderful scents of the Christmas season.  Cookies, pies and special cakes are laid out upon a white table cloth, with candles and lots of beautiful accessories.  The inviting aromas of pine, cinnamon, chocolate and peppermint permeate the air. The roaring fireplace invites you into a cozy, comfy room which beckons you to a different world.  The warmth of hot chocolate kisses your lips or a mug of egg nog, spiced with a bit of brandy adds to the celebration.

Sounds perfect, right?

Maybe not quite as perfect as we planned.  We go through the motions of preparing for this wonderful holiday.  We spend hours looking through magazines for ideas on the most beautiful presentation, the most delicious foods, the perfect gifts.  We scroll through Pinterest, run out to get the materials needed for a special craft, only to spend more than you intended and the craft is a disaster.

The children are filled with extra sugar, mega-energy, super-sized wants and needs and you just can’t manage to get things done.  They are calling for attention.  Your house needs a makeover.  Relatives descend on you and what should be a giant family reunion, may turn into a disaster.  You try to squeeze all this extra stuff into the little time you have between work and extra curricular activities.  Your temper rises, your fuse is short and most likely someone develops a cold or the flu.

Those dreams of the perfect holiday have all but vanished.

You try to manage your shopping so you keep within a certain budget, but know you won’t have nearly enough.  You stress out for not sending Christmas cards.  You remember loved ones who have left this world.  There’s not enough time, nor money, nor strength to get it all done. Your emotions are on a giant roller coaster.

A young woman was about to give birth, that first Christmas Eve.  Mary and Joseph had made the treacherous journey to Bethlehem to be counted in the census.  There was no available room in the little town.  They didn’t know what to do.  None of this adventure made any sense.  It was if they had been moving blindly, after the angelic messenger told them what was to occur.

The baby was not going to wait for the perfect room.  He was going to be born NOW!  So they went to the place where animals slept – a cold, dark and dank space that reeked of hay, manure and smelly animals.  Jesus was born with no fanfare.  He was the King of Kings and yet his tiny body was wrapped in strips of cloth and laid in a feeding trough.  It was not the place for a king.  It was not expected or what they hoped for, but it was part of God’s master plan for us.

The greatest gift ever, was born that night.  In that manger, lay the Son of God and Mary – the Messiah born to save the world from sin.  There were no special trimmings – no extravagant food – no trumpets blaring – only the sound of a cow mooing occasionally or a lamb bleating.  Except for the angelic choir singing the most glorious songs, there was nothing but peace.

We can decorate our homes and make them look perfect, but it’s what’s inside that really matters.  I’m not talking about all the flashy ornaments and gorgeous trimmings.  I’m referring to what’s inside our hearts.

Jesus makes our hearts perfect – way beyond anything the world imagines – complete with the promise of eternal life in a perfect place.  What an amazing gift, with no strings attached.

OLD & NEW

Christmas-Traditions

Like the Fiddler on the Roof, I love tradition but it doesn’t carry the same punch it used to.  Maybe it’s because we want to make new traditions that fit our lifestyle and some of the old ways are nothing more than old-fashioned.

Did you know that the practice of having a Christmas tree was first started in the 16th century?  The beautiful fir trees that lined the forests of Germany looked like God had sprinkled glitter all over them.  The people often often hung apples on them as a reminder of the Tree of Life.  They also added lit candles to depict the Light of the World.

I have memories of going to the woods to cut down a tree.  We’d bundle the kids up so they could barely move.  We trudged through deep snow and since my husband has an eye for perfection, we had to find just the right tree.  He then would take out his axe and begin chopping.  This is where the fun began.  The kids loved the idea of cutting down a tree each year, but the tradition died after a while.  Like many traditions, they simply don’t fit our lifestyle anymore.

I also remember making fresh egg nog for my family during the holidays.  It was made from fresh, raw eggs – cream, sugar and nutmeg.  Occasionally the adults would add a bit of brandy to spice it up.  That doesn’t happen now, because of the danger of salmonella poisoning.

Traditions come and go, but the message of the season should never be clouded by a change in our lifestyle.  Jesus came to us at Christmas.  He was born of a virgin – conceived by God Himself – became our brother.  That isn’t tradition.  It’s a fact and one that will never change.

As we prepare for the advent season, let’s take time to look at some of the old-fashioned traditions, but not forget the One that never goes out of style – JESUS!

HE COULD’VE COME IN GLORY

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

You could have come in glory, in purple robes and crown,
You chose a life of poverty instead,
Your bed was once a feeding trough, your palace now a barn,
A perfect place for you to lay your head,
You came to be my brother – to bear my every pain,
So I could share your glory. Your life is now my gain.

ONE BAD POLITICIAN

th

When we look at our politicians today, what do we see?  We’re pounded with stories of indiscretion, sexual harassment, corruption, undignified behavior and evil occurring all over the place. We’ve the ‘benefit’ of receiving all this juicy gossip daily – even taking precedence over a terrorist attempt in NYC.  The news media has become nothing more than sensationalism and pulp fiction at its worse.

In Jesus time, there was corruption in government, but it wasn’t restricted to politics.  The common folks of that time had better things to do than read twitter accounts, listen to tainted, one sided reports.  They didn’t care what happened in that realm.  They were too busy eeking out a living and trying to get through another day without dying.

However, there were some really bad dudes running the country at the time of Jesus’ birth.  Herod was charismatic, ruthless, paranoid and maniacal. What a guy!Born an Edomite, he was a Jew like his subjects. In his lifetime he built Judaea into a thriving metropolis. One of his projects was Masada, a heavily protected fortress.

He was one of the movers and shakers of his day, but he had a dark side. He had 10 wives, one which he killed in a jealous rage. He had two of his sons murdered, because he feared they were plotting to kill him. The man had no real.  It had been vacuumed up like someone falling into quicksand.

The Jews had been promised by the government that they could worship outside of the Roman religions, but they had to pay for the privilege. Herod taxed them heavily and used the revenue for his massive construction plans. We all know what happened when he found out that another King was born to take his place. The murder of the innocents had to be one of the most horrific events of this time period.

Yet our Savior was born and spared by God, because He had a mission for the baby, Jesus.  It was the perfect point in history for Him to be born.  The census would lead His family to the city of Bethlehem (the city of King David) to fulfill another prophecy about the Messiah’s birthplace.

King, Jesus will come again and rule with power unseen by humankind.  He defeated our greatest enemy.  He conquered death and gave all who believe in Him, eternal life.  He is a just king – a loving king – One who took our place so we wouldn’t never again suffer the chains of sin or death.

As we look at our own political scene, sin is alive and well.  The devil still roams the earth and shoots his evil darts at us daily. He lives in Washington.  He works in the everyday world as well.  He entices, lures and tempts us constantly.

When we walk with Jesus, we can be assured that He has chosen a perfect place for us.  He is our perfect ruler and He has chosen us to be part of His eternal kingdom.

GOD’S WORD SUSTAINS

ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

When troubles surround me, and fear lies within,

When anxious thoughts linger and turn me to sin,

There’s one thing to count on, of that I am sure,

My God is there with me, His love will endure,

Your Word, Lord, is perfect. Its teachings are true,

By faith we accept it, not by what we do,

Your words can give strength to our weak minds each day,

Our path is made straight by the things that you say,

You reach out your hand and you touch me with love,

I long for the day when I see you above.

OUR CHRISTMAS ANGEL

18157992_10203645191005779_2216775455950748579_n (2)

45 years ago, I’d reached the end of my third pregnancy.  We were in the center of one of Wisconsin’s common snow storms.  I knew it wouldn’t be long before this little one would be born.  It took some time to wake my husband, who was in one of those deep sleeps – the kind that happens when you’ve been anticipating something and can’t sleep and when you do, you can’t wake up.  I shook him a few times – got our other two dressed in their snowsuits and tried again.  At last he realized I was in labor.

We hustled the children off to our neighbors and sped to the hospital.  We did not know the gender of our soon-to-be born child.  We were in one of those many stages of life, when money was short and uncertainty about the future ran rampant.  Of course, being a woman, I am also a worrier.  I think that attribute is part of being a mother too.  I guess someone in the family has to do it.

When I originally became pregnant, I was approaching my 30th birthday.  At that time, it was unusual for women to bear children beyond their twenties.  Our future was unsure.  We had two children already.  Adding another mouth to feed seemed impossible.  My husband, being the rock that he is, tried to convince me that everything would be fine and that God would always provide for us.  I continued to worry.

When the sweet, baby girl was born with a complete head of hair, all her fingers and toes and perfect in every way, I knew that everything would be fine.  The worries would continue and still do.  Being a mom is a lifetime experience which requires you to be concerned about your children until the day that you die.

Our Christmas angel arrived home a couple days later with part of her umbilical cord still attached.  Our son seemed very interested in that phenomenon.  We named our new daughter, Joy, Noel.  The following days were filled with visitors, lots of hugs and attention to this new little bundle.  It was nearing Christmas and we were leading up to another birthday celebration – Jesus’ birthday.

As we sang the many familiar carols, our son seemed puzzled. When we returned from church he said, “We were singing about my baby sister tonight, weren’t we?”  I thought it had something to do with her name and singing about joy, but he continued, “Remember the song, Oh, come all ye faithful?”

We sang the first verse together:

Oh, come, all ye faithful,
Triumphantly sing;
Come, see in the manger
Our Savior and King
To Bethlehem hasten
With joyful accord;
Oh, come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord!

“See, mom,” he said.  “It’s talking about going to Bethlehem with Joy, full of cord.”

That delightful memory, mingled with the many to come, seems to pop up every year as we sing, “Oh, come all Ye Faithful.”  Our daughter continues to be our Christmas angel.  She grew into a wonderful woman and also had a child born in December.  Our joy has been doubled through both of them.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TO MY BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS ANGEL, JOY!
