THE WILD FRONTIER

wldwstA

Picture a time where guns were a part of your daily apparel – where they were used to put food on the table, go to war and defend yourself.  Now think about the outlaw who used his guns to terrorize the community – to hold up a bank – to kill his neighbor – to refuse to give them up – ever!

This is the way life was on the wild frontier.  This is pretty much the same way life is becoming today.  The right to bear arms was written into our constitution for a reason – to prevent the Federal government from ruling with tyranny.

Something strange is going on in the land of the free.  Little by little our original rights as citizens are being whittled away.  The Constitution no longer seems to have any value.  There is no batting of the eye when a women decides to end a pregnancy.  It’s even condoned and paid for.  Police are accused of creating a vigilante society.  Criminals have been praised for their actions.  The elderly have lost their place of honor to anyone under 40 and end of life is an option for them.  Children are killing other children because they don’t know how to talk to each other, nor have they been taught to value life.  Everyday we see the use of guns being blamed for the condition of our society.  You rarely hear about the perpetrator and their lack of common sense.

Have we come full circle as a nation?  Are our city streets beginning to look like the old west?  Have the Ten Commandments become just a list of suggestions which have grown outdated?  Do we value life so little that we think nothing about consequences for actions?

I don’t know if there are any clear answers.  I only know that what once was a nation of Judeo-Christian values is being eaten up by a “me” generation.  Praise God that He gives us the victory over sin and promises an eternity in Heaven – which I’m longing for more and more each day.

BRRRRRRRRR!

cold_as_ice_by_m0sk-d37r7qt

It’s mighty cold in the frozen tundra of Minnesota.  Cold enough to close almost all the schools in the twin cities.  It was the kind of morning to just curl up in a warm blanket and go back to sleep.  It was so cold, I couldn’t really get my own personal engine started to write my usual early blog.

In thinking about the cold temperatures I was reminded of Job’s references to God’s hand in all of nature.  Here are a few of them:

“From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens?” Job38:29

“The breath of God produces ice, and the broad waters become frozen.” Job 37:10

“when darkened by thawing ice and swollen with melting snow,” Job 6:16

These beautifully descriptive words speak volumes about the power and majesty of our God.  You can almost see Him blowing on the lakes and turning them into frozen bodies of water or touching the atmosphere and creating intricate patterns in the snowflake.  You can hear is whisper in the crunch under your feet as you traverse across the expanses of white. The below zero air enlivens all your senses and you can see, hear, feel, taste and breathe in the presence of God.   In each season He presents Himself to us in the most glorious ways.

How majestic is His name in all the world!

TOUCH ME, lORD

Touch me, Oh Lord, and through that sweet sensation,

May peace come through Your Word, and quiet contemplation.

You hold me in Your precious wings, my spirit now does soar.

With you, Lord my sick heart now sings, your name I will adore.

In His Holy Wings

I’ve often wondered what it would be like to be comforted by God’s almighty wings. His strength would hold me tightly and shield me from any obstacles or interference I would encounter. The softness of His love would make me feel safe and protected. As He lifts me above all the pain and suffering that surrounds me, I would again be refreshed and encouraged. I then realize that I already lie within His wings. He has always supported me and plucked me out of danger. What a precious gift. I not only can rely on His presence in my life, I know that He gives it to me freely.

TAPPING OUR POTENTIAL

8de14424ab0809ada5dad960bbdb16a9

When you’re a student and your being encouraged to make it into a great college and your grades don’t meet up to the standards, you might think your dream will never come true.  You may even go to extreme lengths – even ones that are against everything you believe in – to get there.

When you’re a young stay-at-home mom  (or dad) it sometimes might feel that you don’t have the strength to get through the day.  The obligations are extreme – the wear and tear physically and emotionally immense – the results often go unnoticed.   Maybe you bear the scars of a few more grey hairs and wrinkles, but every minute you are spending on the effort is worth it.

When you’re in the workplace and you put forth every effort to succeed and are passed by for a promotion, you might be tempted to throw in the towel or do something against your value system to obtain your desires.

As you grow older and face difficult health concerns or find your time is no longer valued, you might give up and simply feel sorry for yourself.  You may underestimate your worth and the time still allotted you.

In each stage of life we are called upon to push ourselves a little harder – to reach inside and find that extra bit of strength, integrity, honor and untapped potential.  We may think we’re doing the best we can, but with Jesus as our partner in life, we have all those things and more right at our fingertips.

With each day, ask Him to walk with you.  Ask Him to be your power source.  Ask Him to guide your steps and face whatever life has to put in your path.  With Him all things are not only possible, but assured.

NATIONAL FRUITCAKE TOSS DAY

582f78ad8856f661587e30acbd946923

That poor old fruitcake has been sitting in a box for over a month now. You can’t bear to throw it away, because someone has put a lot of effort into making it.  Today is your chance. Where else, but in America, would a day be set aside for tossing your fruitcake?

When you think about it, we are a nation of throwing things away.   When something has outrun its usefulness we toss it.  I remember days when we saved everything.  Egg cartons were recycled along with milk and pop bottles.  Diapers were washed and re-used.  Clothing was handed down to three our four children until it no longer stayed in one piece.  Disposable items have only increased the landfills.  Oh how far we’ve come!  And now we can add to this, the tossing of a innocent little fruitcake whose only goal in life was to make us happy.

We can’t change the direction of today without putting some value on the things of the past.  As we start this new year and think about how we’ll resolve to make this a better place, maybe we should become less concerned with quantity and more on quality.  We can start by eating that fruitcake or giving it to someone who would gladly eat it, because they’re hungry.

The point of my post really has nothing to do with fruitcake, but hopefully will get us thinking about the value we place on things rather than on people.  We’re all like little fruitcakes in a way – made up of a variety of talents and flavors.  If we share just a small piece of ourselves, the planet will survive with God’s intervention.  By the way, He doesn’t need our help.

MOVE ON

To many, New Year’s Eve is a time for a do-over.  We all have things we want to change or make better in the future.  In fact, every day should really be considered an opportunity to begin fresh. Why wait until we’ve gone through a whole year of disappointment, sadness, lost dreams, failed goals?   Shouldn’t we just be grateful for another minute to live?

Our time on this planet is limited.  We don’t know how much has been allotted to us.  We have no clue to what God has arranged for our lives, but we can be sure that it is something great if it’s coming from Him.

As we look back on the past year, we may learn some valuable lessons which we will carry into the new year.  Let one of them be to put our complete trust in the One who is in control of all things.  Stop the pity parties.  Stop the feelings of helpless and hopelessness.  Stop thinking we can change the world.  Lets be wrapped in the arms of the only One who can bring hope, peace and forgiveness to a lost and beleaguered world.

Forget about the past.  God has.  Through His Son, sin no longer can hold us.  Through His wounds we are healed.  Instead of looking back – look forward – to that perfect place He has prepared for us.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

OUT OF THE DARKNESS

Through the cobwebs of existence – through the darkness of our strife –

Through the dankness of our sinfulness, through the wickedness of life

Through the deepest, darkest pits of hell and the helplessness we feel –

Comes a single beam of light from heaven our sinful hearts to heal.

The light grows stronger as we move to get a closer glance,

but as we reach to touch it, we’re enveloped in a trance.

It’s just within our reach we think, but no matter how we try,

We can’t escape the darkness that consumes us from all sides.

Just when we think that all is lost and relinquish every hope,

The light erases darkness and through it we can cope.

This little light from Bethlehem became a brilliant star

that came to earth to save the world from sin’s most deadly scar.

He came in darkness of the night, but His brilliance cannot hide.

We are redeemed by His great might.  He always will abide.

2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 8,200 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 3 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

REGRETS

My-Way-1

The song, “My Way,” made famous by Frank Sinatra, became a huge success and was a statement of what his life was all about.  It started out, “Regrets, I’ve had a few …”  OK, a few maybe, but I doubt it.  Regrets for most of us, become heartbreaking.  When we feel sorry for doing something that may have hurt another, it should play on our conscience.  We shouldn’t be like old Blue Eyes and rely on our own deeds to get us through the messes we make in life – and I bet that he had a lot more regrets than he was ready to admit.

When we’re truly sorry for our actions and go to the one who’s in charge of every aspect our life, we can depend on forgiveness.  We may not get it from the ones we’ve hurt or stepped on or insulted, but when we sincerely repent to the One who forgives completely, we can be confident that our sins – even though they may be many – have been wiped off  our record.

Therefore we should not go on doing things which cause more regret.  We should be thankful and rejoice in the love God has bathed us in and our gratitude should change the way we think – the way we live – the way we do.

Dear Lord, instead of it being my way, help me to live according to Your Way.   Help me to realize that my works don’t earn my forgiveness.  Only You can take away my sins and You did that.  Let me now be grateful for what you’ve done for me.  Thank you for your forgiveness and your presence in my life.  Amen!

PASSING THE BUCK

I blame you,

You blame someone else,

They blame another

and eventually it comes back to me.

Maybe it would save a lot of time and trouble

If I took responsibility in the first place.

IT’S NOT MY FAULT!

blame2

We have become a generation of blame gamers.  Of course, blaming someone else for our actions isn’t new, but it seems to be making a huge comeback.  I used to have a computer that would exclaim, “It’s not my fault” whenever I made a mistake.  I hated that machine and was glad to say goodbye to it.

We don’t like being accused of being wrong.  It makes us nervous and extremely uncomfortable – especially if the accusation is correct. It’s much easier to pass the buck on to someone else.

One of the most basic rules in the Bible was given by Jesus during His ministry.  It’s the Golden Rule.  I don’t think it’s being taught much in our homes much anymore.  I know it probably isn’t taught in  public schools, because it wouldn’t be politically correct to teach anything Biblical.

However, it is something that should begin at home. Children learn first from their parents, siblings and extended family.  If they see people around them blaming others for their condition – or for the things that they do – or for the way they treat others, that’s how they’ll behave.  Add to that all the influences of their peers when they venture into the world and it will naturally take off from there.

I’s time for all of us to own up to our mistakes and ask for forgiveness.  Hey, that sounds like repentance.  When we realize that repentance leads to forgiveness, isn’t that better than feeling guilty?

I blame you,

You blame someone else,

They blame another

and eventually it comes back to me.

Maybe it would save a lot of time and trouble

If I took responsibility in the first place.

Thank God He looks beyond our imperfections because of the One who took all the blame for us – Jesus.

Ten New Year’s Resolutions

So …. Three days until you and I will change the way we live. We will begin another diet – cut down on using electronic devices – spend more quality time with spouse or children – cut out some addictive behavior – become more positive – find a cure for cancer – bring peace to the world ….. NOT! Let’s get real.

Life is full of surprises, challenges, bumps in the road, the unexpected, the unwanted, unnecessary and obstacles that sometimes are insurmountable. Here are ten suggestions for starting the new year right.

1. Set realistic goals. Don’t try to lose 20 pounds in a month. It will return. Trust me. I know!

2. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t accomplish your goal immediately. Tomorrow is another day.

3. Trust your gut. If you don’t feel right about something, you’re probably right.

4. Start thinking outside of the box. Many great accomplishments have been reached because someone looked for a different way of doing things.

5. Start thinking less of your own wants and more of others. One of the most rewarding things to do is help someone else realize their dreams.

6. Do something nice for your neighbor. Shovel their sidewalk or help them carry in their groceries.

7. Open your Bible. There’s lots of good stuff in there.

8. Don’t worry about the state of the world. There is nothing you can do about it unless your name is Warren Buffet or Bill Gates.

9. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Small stuff can easily become big stuff if you let it.

10. Have confidence that God is directing your life. He is putting all the pieces together for you. With Him you can do anything and you are never alone.

VALUE EACH DAY

th0IXH319L

Soon the year will be ending and we’ll be thinking of things that we’d like to change next year.  S0me of us have issues with our weight and want to get back into shape – some have habits that have haunted them for years and they want to stop – some want to change something that they don’t feel good about.  Isn’t it funny how we choose one day a year to make alterations to our lives and within a week or so, we’re back to our old ways of doing things?

We have become so used to the way things are that it’s difficult to do them any other way.  We become victims of our circumstances.  Change isn’t easy.  We resist it – we don’t like it – we fight it – we often give in to it reluctantly – but the truth is we change all the time.  Our lives are in a constant state of motion.

There is nothing wrong with making resolutions to change for the better, but sometimes I think we expect too much of ourselves.  It’s much easier to change if we have someone there to guide – encourage – inspire – and push us into action.

When you are a child of God, you have all that and more.  Like a Father, He helps us through the difficult times in life – He gives examples through His Word on how to live – He encourages us through His Spirit – He takes our hand and sometimes even carries us.

Remember when making your resolutions this year that you are not alone.  God is right there beside you, because He never changes.  He’s always consistent, faithful, all knowing, all powerful and always with you.  Let’s return to His ways next year.  He never fails.

We are a Christian nation

During the nine months since starting this blog I have found an amazing group of fellow believers in Jesus, Christ our Savior. It warms my heart to know that there are so many Christians out there. Somehow the media has made us believe – and our president stated that we are no longer a Christian nation. If each of these Christian bloggers reach only one person to share God’s love, can you imagine how strong this so called minimal group can be. We need to be courageous in our faith and we should never be ashamed of it.

I feel blessed to have read so many good writings here and am proud to be part of this family of believers.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Names of Jesus Color Wallpaper

When it comes to naming a new baby, many things are taken into consideration.  I remember being asked about my daughter Joy’s name some years ago.  The person wondered if we waited for a while to name her because she is so suited to the name.  What does your name mean?  Were you named after a special family member?  Did your parents search for a name that held a specific connotation that would set you apart from others?

The names selected for Jesus are many.  The angel told Mary that her Son should be named Jesus because it meant that He would save the people from their sins.  He would be called Immanuel – which means God with us.  Both of those titles show the true nature of Jesus.  He is the Messiah long waited for.  He also came to earth as God in the flesh to dwell with us – to experience all that we go through day by day and so much more.

He was called despised among men.  His name is associated with suffering and pain and the cross of a criminal.  He was referred to as the Lamb of God – the final sacrifice that would at last take away the sin that man could not remove on his own.  His holy precious blood was shed so that we could be redeemed – bought back by the perfect ransom.

Today may the joy of our Savior – Redeemer – Comforter – One true God – live with you and shine in you.  May we reflect on the love that He showed for us and celebrate the fact that we are free from the curse of death because of Him.

Merry CHRIST-mas!

DO NOT BE AFRAID!

6365878-lg

How many times have we told this to our children?  How many times have we been told to reach out to someone other than ourselves when things are tough?  Life isn’t easy. We face all kinds or trouble from the moment we enter this world.  We come out kicking and screaming and often leave in the same way.

All around us, the world seems to be falling apart.  Within our own little circles, we see friends going through difficulties of all sorts.  Within the confines of our own homes, we may be faced with as much turmoil as we see on the news each day.   Let’s face it.  Things in this world aren’t going to get better, but we can get through them a lot easier if we let go of our fears and trust in the only One who will catch us if we fall.

It may seem that no one cares that Christmas has become a sideshow for merchants – that gifts to each other have overtaken the greatest gift of all – that this season of peace has turned into a race to outdo others in our giving, our receiving and our expectations.

We might think that the world has gone to hell in a hand basket, but still God tells us not to be afraid.  We will never see perfection in this world, but we can get a glimpse of it by reading about God’s eternal love for His people in His Word to us.

Don’t give up – don’t lose faith – don’t be afraid.  God’s angels spoke those words to the shepherds, to Mary and Joseph and God Himself tells us to relax – let go – trust – give in to Him.  He is the only One we can rely on for completeness.   He will never let go of us.

SWEET JESUS

You came to a world filled with darkness and sin.

You loved us devoutly without and within.

Your love conquered all through a child meek and small,

Sweet Jesus, Your Son came and died for us all.

You took away sadness and filled us with peace,

You give us a hope that defies life’s surcease.

You gave Your life for us so we could be free.

Sweet Jesus, Your blood you did shed on the tree.

Your body lay lifeless, but rose on that day,

To show us that our sins you carried away.

So now we look forward to that special time

Sweet Jesus to join you in heaven sublime.

Come quickly Lord, Jesus, and carry us home,

Take us from the darkness of this world we roam.

Be with us forever and love us each day,

Sweet Jesus, we love you, what more can we say?

Silent Night

THE TREE OF LIFE

In the Garden of Eden You planted two trees, with fruit so divine and sweet.

One was given for eating, the other not so, but temptation would soon defeat.

Man had fallen from grandeur to deepest despair, He needed redemption within.

So you gave him the purest –  the sinless – the pure – to take on the burden of sin.

When we travel to heaven, we’ll see that sweet fruit, that grows on the Tree of Life.

It will heal and restore us and give us new life – from troubles and pain and strife.

He will take us and lead us to pastures of green and still waters will He provide.

We’ll at last be united and joined with Him there – as His perfectly treasured bride.
