WHAT GOES ON BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

red-light-behind-closed-door-wallpaper-1

“In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.”  Luke 12:1-3

We live in a fairly quiet neighborhood in spite of the fact that we are within breathing distance of a major highway.  There have been a number of accidents, police response calls, chases and other activities that usually occur on a major artery.  Still our home and those of our neighbors are rather isolated from each other. Occasionally someone will stop for a bit of light conversation, but nothing to create lifelong relationships.  Sad in a way.  The world has become so busy and focused on their own needs, they don’t often reach out to others that live right next door.  Morning coffee with a friend has turned into a texting conversation.  Time is consumed with interfacing online rather than face to face communication.  Much of our society has separated itself from interaction outside their own walls.

We have one fellow on our block, who is wheel chair bound, due to the amputation of one leg.  He often sits in front of his house, even during the very cold days.  I think of him as the neighborhood watch dog and have a sense of security because he’s out there.  We’ve had some conversations with him.  Of course, my husband has introduced himself to everyone in the neighborhood.  Even that doesn’t assure of us of who they are and what goes on when they go inside their homes.  The same is true for them.  They don’t know what we do with our days and nights when we lock the doors and turn off the lights.

Yet I find it astounding that a family of 15 could go about their lives without anyone knowing that they were leading a horrific existence.  The story of a husband and wife and their 13 children surfaced recently.  It showed a dysfunctional family in which the children had been submitted to torture and malnutrition.  The oldest “child” being 29 and the youngest, 2.  Each child looked much younger than their actual age, because they were so thin.  These children had been held captive in their own home.  They were homeschooled. They occasionally appeared in public with their parents and seemed to be happy.  No one knew.

This story and many like it pop up from time to time and it makes me angry, sad, threatened, helpless and often hopeless.  One article indicated they were very private people. The mother had no connection with her own family for 20 years.  Some might say that religion played a part in this.  Others may believe it was none of their business to intercede.

I don’t know what causes things like this to happen.  I guess because I had a fairly normal upbringing.  Unfortunately, these kids, thought their lifestyle was normal too, since it was all they knew from little on.  Yet one of them knew it wasn’t right, so she fled and ran for help.  Who knows how long this would’ve gone on had she not done so.

I cannot sit in judgment.  I know that the truth will be revealed on the day of God’s calling to account.  We will all be held accountable for things said or done behind the closed doors of our homes. We will also have to answer for the things we’ve thought within the confines of our minds.

While we wait for that day, we can become closer as neighbors.  We can open our doors and step outside of them.  We can include our neighbors in our prayers.  We can reach out to them instead of cocooning ourselves from the world.  God will help those 13 children through their long journey of recovery.  I pray that we can all learn from this story.

KEEPING IT SIMPLE

The simplicity of the Gospel often boggles the mind.  We are expected to believe something extraordinary – inconceivable – impossible.  We delude ourselves into thinking there has to be more to it than just a childlike faith, but the truth is that God in His infinite wisdom laid out His plan for humanity so many years ago – simply.  Even His holy Word was written for everyone to understand through faith.  You don’t have to be a brain surgeon to study the Bible.  You simply have to have an accepting heart.

We were created by Him – we need His divine intervention because we were corrupted by the devil – He loves us so much that He came to us in human flesh to teach, admonish and die for us – He rose from death showing His power over it – He returned to heaven to prepare a perfect place for us to spend eternity with Him.

Too simple, some might say.  There has to be more to the story than that.  Isn’t there something we should be doing to speed up the process – to help God along with the work that needs to be done – to work our way into heaven?

It’s not about us.  It’s about the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent Creator of heaven and earth.  When human reason gets in the way it gets complicated.  We cannot even begin to understand what God has in mind for us.  All we can do is believe that He has our best interests at heart.  He loves us with a love that is beyond comprehension.  He designed us perfectly, but because of man’s desire to be on an even keel with Him, reason got in the way of that perfection.

Often, when we start to search the scriptures with the intent of becoming wise, our heads get too big and we become like the Pharisees.  We think that the more brainy we become; the more intellect we gain through our own doing; the more godlike we become.

Let’s forget about reason and just accept as children accept what their father tells them is true.  God loves us so much that He put Himself in our place to take our sins to the grave.  We can now rejoice in His salvation.  Very simple – not complicated.

Matthew 18:2-3 “And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.  Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

FACE TO FACE

ART & POETRY FROM PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

When we are sad, when our hearts are breaking,

We need to be wrapped in the protection of God’s holy wings,

Each pinion gently lays over us – cuddling and nurturing,

The softness and strength are overwhelming,

He breathes His presence upon us and gives new life,

He speaks and we are comforted,

His touch is gentle yet full of amazing power,

His steadfastness feeds us,

Nourishes our souls,

Guards us from all evil,

His love is unfailing,

A love so great that it’s indescribable,

His compassion is equal to His might,

We will never be alone as long as He is with us,

Whether in hopeless moments or times of joy,

Lord, be in our hearts, minds and understanding.

Be with us in life so that we will know you fully,

When we meet you face to face.

SKOL VIKINGS

minnesota-vikings-shock-new-orleans-saints-with-final-play-td-2

Up here in Norsekyville, we love our sports teams.  I’ve always admitted to being a Green Bay Packers fan, being the Wisconsin native that I am, but today it’s all about the Vikings.  In a stunning comeback, they had only seconds to go and scored an amazing touchdown flung by Keenan to Diggs and that was it.  What looked like a sure win for the New Orleans Saints took a quick turn.

This year the Super Bowl will be played in Minnesota and wouldn’t it be nice if the home team could be part of the celebration in the new US Bank Stadium?

I couldn’t help but see Facebook light up with the word “SKOL” all over the place and my natural curiosity put me in search of the actual meaning of the word.  The word is defined in the dictionary as a shortened version of the phrase “good health” or used when making a toast.  As I searched further, I discovered that the word originated from the old Norse word skal, which means bowl.  Further investigation led me to this.

Apparently the ancient Vikings (not the over the hill football Vikings) would make a bowl out of a skull obtained in battle (yuck) and drink from it.  My search ended there.

I love doing word research, but this was a bit too graphic for me.  Football often does that to me too.  Last night was an exception however.  It was fun to see this underdog team make such a terrific last minute play which carried them to an outstanding win.  Winning isn’t everything, but it sure is fun.

Skol, Vikings!

RAGING OR LIFE GIVING WATER

4de1e3d77b5c829443efc1d935458183

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL T. & KATHY BOECHER©

Churning,

Swirling,

Pulsating,

Driven by the turbulence of energy,

The long, leaf lavished limbs of mature trees,

Undulate under the  rhythm of God’s breath,

Up and down, here and there, tossing, stirring,

His inspiration manifests

In the wind,

In the water,

In the weather,

His Words have been breathed into the pens of men,

He speaks to us through them,

He never grows tired,

Never spent of energy,

Never sleeps,

Breathe life into me, Lord, God,

That my remaining days may be a testimony to you.

THE PROMISED LAND

In April of 1968, I had two toddlers, was a stay at home mom, and was living in small town Wisconsin.  We were far away from the riots  raging in Milwaukee in the sixties, but were well aware of them.  The neighborhood where my husband grew up had turned into a war zone as our nation fought another kind of civil war.

In that year, a popular young minister was doing his best to bridge the chasm of race discrimination, but soon would fall victim to an assassin’s rage.  In a speech delivered shortly before his death, he spoke of making it to the promised land.

This young man, was born in 1929 as Michael King, Jr.  His father, while traveling in Germany five years later, became so inspired by the Protestant reformer, Martin Luther, that he changed his name and that of his five year old son.  Martin, Jr. was a brilliant child and skipped two grades in school, allowing him to enter college at the age of 15.  He never intended to follow the family business and become a preacher, but that is exactly where God led him.

Unfortunately, during his lifetime, the burden of racial tension was still prominent even in the north.  There were segregated areas for blacks to eat. They had to use separate rest rooms.  They were not allowed to stay in white hotels and were sent to the back of the buses and deemed by some as second class citizens.  This was supposed to be over and done with, but the stigma remained.  It was a dark spot in our history and continues in some areas of the country even today.

On April 3rd of 1968, Dr. King spoke to a group of black garbage workers at the Mason Temple Church in Memphis.  In his speech that night, he said,

“Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now … I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. And I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King was killed by an assassin.  Did he know his death was so close?  Was this a prophetic speech?  I think Dr. King was confident in heaven.  He knew that his life was in danger.  He’d been arrested 30 times in his lifetime.  His cause was not a popular one, yet he continued on in the face of peril.

Getting to the Promised Land happened much sooner than it should have for Martin.  He was only 39 when he died, but the impact he made on America, earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.  His name has gone down in history as a great reformer himself and like his namesake, he knew that heaven was his eternal home.

We still live in a world of prejudice and hatred.  I’m afraid this will go on for all time, because the devil enjoys stirring people up and creating a stew of anger, rage and hatred.  The only true peace will come when we reach the Promised Land, not by any of our own doing, but by the grace of a loving God.

FEARFUL

fears-and-phobias

I have a fear of heights. I’m also uncomfortable in small spaces. I’ve had dreams about dying on the ocean. These are not unusual phobias, but did you know there is a fear of going to bed? Some people are threatened by the number 8. There is a fear of going to the zoo! There are phobias for hundreds of other things too.

We all suffer from this malady called fear. It’s part of our human nature. Many seek psychiatric help for relief. Some try to overcome fear by doing just the thing they are afraid of in order to overcome it. Others believe they can think their fears away.  Some folks are overcome by their fears and live in fear of their fears happening at any moment.  What a desperate situation to be in.  These fears can be so real, they become a way of life for some.

Some of the fears experienced can be a result of a traumatic life memory, which can trigger a negative feeling and cause the trauma to actually return vividly in their minds.  What are you afraid of? Maybe your life has dealt you a bad hand and you’re facing the loss of a job – a serious health issue – the loss of a loved one – financial ruin.  All of those things strike fear into our minds and the devil knows it.  He loves when bad things happen to us, because it leaves us wide open for his lies.

When God’s children are afraid, they’re told to depend on their heavenly Father for refuge.

Psalm 34:4 says, “I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”

What a comfort it is to know that someone else is willing to take that load from us. Fear will never be completely out of our lives until we reach paradise, but when they become unbearable, we know that we can get through them with God’s help.  All things are possible with Him.

SNOWY DAY

0fec63ea91091ef16934c566a95d5270 (2)

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

I never thought of white as my favorite color. All shades of blue and green and some shades of red or brilliant yellow are more my choice. White is the color of milk and those fluffy cumulus clouds that float overhead. You can see white as the background for words and you can even make your teeth whiter if you want to.

I guess the entire color wheel is much more appealing than white – but then again white is the combination of all colors. Without color there would be no white. Without God there would be no color. He is the One who created it. Without God there would be nothing to truly appreciate in this world.  There would be no world.

I need to start appreciating the color white. It looks like we’re going to be seeing a lot of it this winter. Fresh, white snow is falling again. It has washed away all the ugliness from the backyard – all those yellow patches. It has covered the remainder of leaves that fell after the last snowfall. It glistens like a field of diamonds.  Its a good reminder of how God has washed us clean from our sins and made us perfect in His sight.

Thank you, God for WHITE!

THE PERFECT LOVE STORY

gods-love-story-1-728His love is like none we have ever experienced here on earth.

His love is beauty beyond our wildest dreams.

His love is precious, merciful, compassionate.

His love is given freely without question.

His love doesn’t look at our past mistakes.

He is blind to our transgressions.

He loves in times of anger, hatred, self-pity, depression.

He loves it when we love each other.

His love is a gift – more precious than diamonds or gold.

His love is the greatest love ever known or experienced by man.

No kiss or caress can compare with the touch of our Savior, God.

He cuddles us in His strong protective arms.  He shields us with His strong wings.

He lifts us up when we fail.

He encourages us when we think we can’t go on.

He inspires us to go the extra mile.

He walks with us through all the joy, bliss and excitement of life.

He carries us through all the trials, burdens, hassles, fears and frustrations.

His love is so great, that He was willing to die for us.

His love overcame death when He returned to life,

His love is permanent, unconditional, everlasting, amazing.

His love is like no other – it endures forever and ever!

FLOUNDERING

6732457c72aa05f4629bf9347a6d0c76 (2)ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

What happened to the days of our untethered youth.

When all we needed required only truth,

When worries were few and troubles simply unknown,

What happened from then to the life we have sown,

Our days filled with moments both frivolous and fun,

We soon find there’s nothing new under the sun,

That satisfies fully or give us complete peace,

We watch as hope dwindles and delights decrease.

The days rage by in torrents. In storms they do fly.

Joy turns now to mourning and often we cry.

Our tears fill up rivers, our moans pierce the air,

Hearts often falter, giving way to despair.

We fall before our God with old bruises and scars,

Of bludgeoning wounds which surpass all the stars.

Without question God finishes work He’s begun.

Our youth then returns as the victory is won.

We come to Him broken and hanging onto life,

We come when we no longer can bear the strife.

When we finally let go and let God do His best.

Through Jesus our Savior we pass every test.

He gives us new life even though we are old,

Our time weathered bodies completely unfold,

Into perfectly formed and beautifully made,

He washes with blood for my sins He has paid.

Our new life comes quickly. The old passes by,

And we become new on the day that we die,

The breath comes from heaven and God’s only Son,

Old bodies renewed, His work is now done.

HE LIFTS ME UP

cb047243da8b960b35352ebfb2d82244

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

Psalm 91:4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.

A magnificent hawk spots its prey,

Swooping stealthily down to capture it,

His wings contain power and majesty,

and at the same time dread and death,

For the waiting meal,

My God has healing in His wings,

He covers me with His safety,

He lifts me with His might,

He shields me from all danger,

In the protection of their softness,

He uses them as a rescue net,

From the storms of life,

Even when the world assails,

And all seems lost,

He is there to cuddle,

And protect me from all outside influences,

I can rest in that knowledge,

Knowing that nothing in this world can harm me,

Even in my darkest hours, He is my armor.

HE IS MY GOD!

WHAT MASK WILL I WEAR TODAY?

Above is a collage of the many faces of me.  There are a zillion more, but I didn’t want to bore you.

We all have many faces.  Sometimes we feel sad, happy, concerned, angry, adventurous or fearful.  Emotions have a way of leaking out of our skin and onto our faces.  The eyes can be the mirror to the soul, they say – whoever they may be.  We can change the way we’re feeling by putting on a different face, depending on who we’re with or where we are.  Our faces tell a lot about us.

Charles Schultz’s Lucy, reminded Charlie Brown that he had a failure face – and even though it never let him get totally bummed, he felt like he had one.  People may tell you to put on a “happy” face, but it isn’t easy to be happy all the time.  When tears escape from your eyes, that tells a different story.  There are times when we are deep in thought and others may think we’re distant or uncaring.  We may even give a totally wrong impression by the face we wear.

Women focus on their faces more than men do.  We grow fearful when wrinkles appear, because it shows that we’re growing old.  We spend hundreds of dollars a year on cosmetics and creams that will give us clear complexions, beautiful eyes and lips and skin that supposedly defies age.  If I had a nickel for every skin cream I purchased, I wouldn’t have so many wrinkles.

We can change our facial expression in seconds.  One moment we are content and the next, something sets us off and we fall victim to depression or sadness.  The face is one of the most important parts of an actor’s tool box, because it defines what’s going on within the character.  When we aren’t playing a part and just going through every day life, it isn’t as easy to change the way we feel.

God knows everything going on inside of us.  To some that might seem frightening, but for those who truly trust in His love for them, it’s comforting to know that you have such a close confidante.  His omniscience can see right through the façade we put on each day as we carry on.  He knows when our heart is aching – when we’re worried – when we’re fearful – when we feel alone.  He knows our every thought – good or bad.  He looks within us and could easily condemn us right then and there for our evil thoughts, but because of His great love for us, He only sees His Son.

Jesus cleaned us up on the inside, so we don’t have to fear God’s condemnation.  Through His death and resurrection, we have been redeemed and made heirs of heaven.  So we can put on a happy face every day.

LIFE SPANS

FullSizeRender (6)

ORIGINAL ART & INSPIRATION BY KATHY BOECHER©

The miracle of birth,

Pushing its way through to life,

For a brief time that life glimmers and shines,

But all too soon it is snuffed out,

Like a once brilliant bloom, it withers,

It grows weak,

It can be easily crushed,

We walk this earth for just a short span,

We love,

We laugh,

We flourish,

Some more brilliant than others,

Still that whisper of life,

That brief inhalation,

Tenaciously holds  for a while,

We love,

We share,

We dream,

We plan,

We expand our vision,

We hurt,

We falter,

We die,

But life returns again,

Like the lilies of the field,

We will assume new life,

A better one,

One that lasts forever.
