I came across this passage today and it made me think of how this life is so uncertain.  We can share relationships and friendships – hardships and loss – joys and successes, but all those things are really only temporary.  Someday we will die.  Someday our hardships may turn into depression – our happiness and success don’t last forever.

Everything in our existence is transitory.  We could be sitting at the pinnacle of our earning power, when the bottom falls out and we are left with nothing but the change in our pocket.  We could be the picture of health one moment and be faced with a terminal illness the next.  We may think we have found the perfect soul mate, but soon discover that they are just as human as we are.  Our flaws, our weaknesses, our strengths and our brain power don’t really amount to a hill of beans when it comes to our relationship with our God.

God’s consistency is something we can count on.  Our accomplishments will not be remembered much after we leave this earth.  Our wealth will have no value in the grave.  Our relationships will also wither and pass away along with us.  The world is in a constant state of change.  Moral values and religion are slowly being gobbled up by a degenerate society. Political correctness has become the norm in almost every area of our lives.

So how do we cope with all this gloom and doom?  We put our trust and faith in the one who never changes – the One who created the world – the One who promises and delivers.

Thank you, dear Lord, for putting up with your people for so long.  Your patience is beyond my understanding.  Your ability to look beyond the imperfections of this world because of your love for us, is just too much to comprehend.  I don’t deserve any special treatment, but still you give it freely to me and all those who love you back.  It’s such a simple thing for us to do, but it’s all you want from us.  Help me to rest in the knowledge that even though things are in a state of change, I can rely on you to be the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. AMEN!

GOD’S GIFT TO US

thZSR85GUN

Yesterday I celebrated my 74th birthday.  As my lifetime now enters almost 3/4 of a century, I can’t help but ponder what’s happened during that time.  I’ve seen so many changes in technology, education, wars, moral decline, political corruption, exploration of distant planets and unknown places, financial ups and downs, invasion of terrorism onto our own soil and a sense of loss of freedom in our great country.

The family unit has changed as well.  Moms and dads were expected to be the spiritual leaders of families.  Children were given responsibilities at home as well as filling their minds with knowledge.  There was no excuse for not working hard for a living.  Welfare was a last resort.  People were used to picking up the pieces of a financial disaster and finding jobs in spite of the economy.  A strong work ethic has weakened with time.

Our nation became prosperous over its short history, but prosperity isn’t always measured by financial gain.  The transportation moguls of old – the lumber barons, the industrialists, the inventors all gained wealth with their ideas and where-with-all, but the result of that gain often came about by the sweat and backs of the common man who made it possible.

We bask in the glow of our accomplishments as a nation, but have we really progressed?  I would never trade my automatic washer and dryer for a creek and a clothesline, but if necessary, I wouldn’t hesitate to dig in and do what I had to do.  Do we still possess that attitude or is it a thing of the past as well?

Now I approach the next portion of my life.  What will the next 25 years hold?  Being a communicator, acting and public speaking coach, I fear that the art of communication is being stifled by electronic devices.  Face to face communication is a thing of the long lost past.  Problems will soon be solved by machines rather than great minds.  Our nation has suffered some great growing pains, but I still have hope for it – as long as it doesn’t lose sight of its Creator.

There is peace for those who continue to hold fast to God’s Word.  It’s the one piece of literature to withstand the test of time and change, without changing.  I pray that the United States of America returns to what might be called old fashioned ideas from a dusty book.  There is a wealth of information within its pages – information that will lead to our survival as well as our eternal life.

BY GRACE ALONE

ff614b3f7ab3a686b93aa7fd24798a64Good works are a result of our love for Jesus, Christ and the work that He has done in us. If for one minute, we deceive ourselves into thinking that we have anything to do with our salvation, we are basically forgetting the sacrifice He made.

Jesus death on the cross was perfect offering to wash away sins, because He was the holy, sinless, unblemished Son of God.  Nothing we can do will ever meet with God’s expectations.  Even our faith is a blessed gift from Him.  Through His holy Spirit, penetrating the walls of our blackened hearts, we come to saving faith.  Once those sin filled hearts receive that gift with complete confidence in the giver, we will naturally give thanks through the way we serve God.

The difficult part comes when we think we’re in control and that we must do something  to receive forgiveness, when the deed has already been done for us by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Good deeds will follow because of our gratitude for the only work necessary.  God’s love for us is beyond our reasoning.

Help me, Lord, Jesus to look to you always as the center of my forgiveness and give me the power to look beyond myself and always reach out to others with your saving grace. Help me remember that any good and perfect thing comes from you and let your goodness shine through me.  Amen!

YOU ARE SPECIAL

If you feel that your role in life isn’t important – if you struggle daily with thoughts of failure – if you believe that whatever you do, it isn’t going to be enough – it’s time to put your confidence in something other than yourself. Some turn to self-help books. Others think they can hide their feelings of inferiority by putting on a mask to cover up their shortcomings. Some turn to drugs or alcohol to deaden the pain. Many simply give up. There are also those who do not lack self confidence, but still struggle because they are trying too hard to find the answers all by themselves. That’s precisely the time we need God’s encouragement the most.

THE PROTECTION OF HIS WINGS

294172_1474087949234_8111980_n

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER©

Psalm 91:4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.

A magnificent hawk spots its prey and swoops down to capture it,

His wings contain power and majesty and at the same time dread and death for his food supply,

My God has healing in His wings,

He can cover me with His safety,

He can lift me with His might,

He shields me in the protection of their softness,

He uses them as a rescue net from the storms of life,

Even when the world assails and all seems lost,

He is there to cuddle and protect me from all outside influences,

I can rest in that knowledge,

Knowing that nothing in this world can harm me,

Even in my darkest hours, He is my armor.

HE IS MY GOD!

IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER

quote-for-art

The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web.” Pablo Picasso

An artist has the ability to take something ugly and turn it into a piece of beauty with his paintbrush.  An actor can take on another’s personality and create a believable character, but still bring something of himself into the role. A writer can create masterpieces with words and stir the imagination with the twist of his pen.   A musician can stir emotion with discordance or beautiful intonations.

We all have the potential to change lives – to change darkness into light – build bridges to wonderful unseen places.  It is part of the creative process that God has placed within each and everyone of us.  It’s what sets us apart from the animals.

We can determine the course of human events – even in a society that seems to be bent on killing each other.  We can focus on love rather than hate.  We can use our voices to change hearts.  We can use our art to let others know how we feel – what needs to be done – how to do it, but if we just sit there and expect it to happen, you can bet there will be no action.

Beauty will never completely inhabit our world, because it is wallowing in sin.  Christ came to take on the burden of that sin and pay the ransom for our souls.  He carried our guilt to the grave and rose again to foreshadow what would happen to His children after death.

We cannot make this world better – only God can do that.  We cannot remove the stain of sin – only God has already done that.  We cannot expect perfection in an imperfect world, but we can be assured that God is still in control and has a plan for us.

As we travel this life, we can choose to accept things as they are – do something about it – or trust that God will take care of it.  Sometimes we need to do all three things.  We are in this world for the short span of our lives.  Use the time to make something beautiful while you’re in it.

GHOSTLY DARKNESS

480507_2272122979611_1100904175_n (3)

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL T. & KATHY BOECHER

A ghostly darkness weaves its way through the forest of your mind,

Creating shadows as it dispenses a feeling of hopelessness,

The murkiness envelops you with a brazen embrace,

Leaving you breathless,

Frightened,

Alone,

Betrayed,

Overcome,

But even in those darkest moments, when you feel the world is on a downward spiral,

When hatred, fear and prejudice overtake your inmost thoughts,

God is there,

He is the source of the hidden light

That leads back to Him.

Turn away from the ghosts of this world,

Look to Him for relief,

He will take away all fear, dispel all sadness and give hope.

OUR FATHER

Our-Father-which-art-in-heaven-Hallowed-be-thy-name

I grew up with a father that expected quite a bit from his children.  He was stern, insisted on our going to church every Sunday, but led a different life apart from church.  He liked to drink – I believe to numb some of his insecurities.  He verbally abused our mother as well as my sister and I.  He rarely complimented or praised us, but often found things to complain about.

It became difficult for me to understand the true, forgiving love of a father.  It took me many years to realize that I have a Father that loves me in spite of my shortcomings.  Even though I was being held tightly by the Holy Spirit during my growing up years, I was being preached to each Sunday by a legalistic preacher who spent most of his sermons expounding on the wrath of God, rather than His loving nature.  I thought for sure I was doomed to hell.

Even though I grew up in Christian schools and was exposed to God’s Word on a daily basis, I didn’t understand God’s fatherly nature.  I considered Him a judge with no mercy.  Many years passed before that message became clear to me. Eventually I began to see that I have been adopted by God as His very own child.  He loves me with a love that human standards can’t imagine.  His love is perfect – the kind that human dads are often incapable of dispensing.

When I discovered the great price God paid to have me be His very own child, the message became even clearer.  Can you imagine someone giving up their life to give you life?  I’m not talking about giving you a kidney or a blood transfusion here.  I’m talking about sacrifice beyond our comprehension.

When we celebrate Father’s Day this year, let’s not forget the Father of all Creation – the One who loves us so much that He laid down His life for our salvation.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO MY HEAVENLY FATHER!

FLAG DAY

th42ZT6TYR

Even though it seems that our nation has lost all reverence for its original foundations, even the flag itself, let’s never forget the what it stands for.  The American Flag was given a special day of celebration on June 14, 1777, when our nation’s first flag was adopted.

Many lives have been spent and blood shed in honor of what that flag represents.  Only a short year before it was adopted as the flag of our nation, America had declared its independence from a tyrannical government across the sea.  It was time for this fledgling country to establish itself as a new nation.

During the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key penned the words of the National Anthem which referred to our flag in stunning words.  There are actually four verses to this song.  The fourth verse is as follows:

O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand,
Between their lov’d homes and the war’s desolation;
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land
Praise the Pow’r that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

As words of allegiance and patriotism are heard today, let’s not forget that our country was founded on Judaeo/Christian values.  In God we trust!  He will lead us again if we repent of our sinful ways and put our faith in Him once more.

WHY ARE WE SURPRISED

OmarMateenOrlandoShooter

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON THE ISAIAH 53:5 PROJECT BY KATHY BOECHER 6-13-16

Have we become so glossed over – so apathetic – so politically correct, that we can’t see this coming?  A man on the Homeland Security watch list commits mass murder in the name of ISIS and it becomes a political argument over gun control rather than considering the mind set of the killer.

I am convinced that we’ve just begun to see the effects of terrorism in our country.  We were made boldly aware of the danger way back on 9/11.  Blood was shed there and on the battlefield fighting it.  Now our passive leaders have let it go in the name of mental illness, stronger laws on the sale of guns, LGBT rights and anything but the truth of the nature of this beast.

We’re afraid to call it what it is.  Extreme Islamic terrorism is a fact that’s being swept under the rug.  I’m afraid that there are cells all over our nation just waiting for the right moment to act.  If something isn’t done to address this evil, we are doomed as a nation.

I am confident in God’s plan for our lives as His followers, but there is a great evil lurking out there and we are trying to cover it up with platitudes and unfounded assertations.  It’s time for us to be watchful.  The enemy is seeking to destroy us.

MY HUSBAND, THE ARTIST

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL T. & KATHY BOECHER©

You hold my hand my heart goes all a flutter.
Each time in our lives that you continue this simple yet intimate gesture.
I feel safe – loved – comforted by your touch. It is my connection to you.
You are my strength, my peace. Your fingers entwined in mine, the pulsing of your heart – I am wrapped in your love.

At first, when you gave your hand to me I felt a plethora of emotions, all the way from friendship to complete and utter passion.
With each passing decade those feelings have turned to trust, dependency, peace, comfort, lifting up and the simplicity of everlasting love.

As time flees from us and each additional day is a blessing,
I will look in your eyes and never forget our first touch.
If my eyes grow dim and my memory falters,
I pray we will still hold tightly to each other, knowing that together
we will once again feel that comfort in our Father’s hands.💕💕

I’M SORRY!

thWXG94DBB

Even through our heartache and failures, God peppers our lives with humor and joy.  He spices up the mix by providing us with embarrassing situations which bring us off our pedestals.  He shows us His love when He gives us comfort during difficult times.  He allows us to look at life with optimism and hope.  He sometimes throws in some very funny things too, so we don’t take things so seriously.  He handles the details of every day, by following His blueprint for our lives – a plan that was designed long before we even came to be.

Blaming Adam and Eve for our problems is like saying, “The devil made me do it.”  Essentially, we are all responsible for our own actions.  Once we accept that our imperfections are because of our own behavior, we don’t have to constantly explain ourselves or succumb to an existence of evil.

God knows our weaknesses and loves us in spite of them.  Like a true Father, He wants us to come to Him when we make mistakes and ask for forgiveness.  Why is that so hard for us to do?  Because we want to be in charge – we want to be the one making the decisions – we, like Adam and Eve, think we know better than  God, but we need Him.

It’s hard to say you’re sorry.  It’s like saying you’re weak and vulnerable, but it is through our repentance that we receive forgiveness.  It’s such an easy solution and yet many of us continue to resist it.

“LOVE MEANS SAYING YOU’RE SORRY.”

TEN WAYS TO BE A GOOD DAD

fail

There are many experts on fatherhood and the best ways to approach the job, but it seems to me that God gives us all the answers we need in His Word. Parenting is mentioned countless times in this book and the requirements are clearly spelled out.

  • Spiritual Leader – A dad should be an example of his family’s spiritual path.   It isn’t just a suggestion,  it’s an obligation.  Proverbs 4 is explicit about a father’s responsibility to instruct his children in the ways of God.  Take the time to read it today.
  • Family Authority – Fathers have been relegated to a lower position lately, but according to God’s book, the father is to be the head of the house.  This does not mean he should rule his family with an iron fist, but love them above all things and defend them with his very life.
  • Disciplinarian – This doesn’t mean a dad has carte blanche permission to whip his children into submission.  It does mean that a loving father will always administer discipline to guide and teach them.  A whole post can be devoted to this one.
  • Good Role Model – The world view of a great dad is one who is a child’s buddy – his benefactor – his yes-man.  God wants dad to set a good example by trusting his Heavenly Father to get him through the difficulties of life.  That is setting the stage for the way the child will approach life.
  • Compassionate – Sharing in your child’s losses, weaknesses, burdens and challenges is one of the best ways to express your love.  When your child is sick, you sit with them. When they are hurt by the words of others, you comfort them.  When they need your protection, you are there for them.
  • Prepare for the Unexpected – When you are trying to shave in the morning, expect to be joined by all your children and the pets in the bathroom.  When you leave for work, plan for the entourage to follow you out the door and into the car.  When you arrive home, expect to give answers to questions that have already been presented to mom for approval without knowing what her answers were.  When you tuck them in at night, expect a long litany of reasons why they shouldn’t go to bed.  You get the picture – right?
  • Protector – In a child’s eyes, a dad is a super-hero.  He can defeat the monsters under his bed – destroy the giant spider on the wall – leap tall buildings with a single bound.  Of course in reality dads are human and their power source comes from a place different than from within.  Let them know that you are willing to do anything for them, but sometimes even you don’t have all the answers.
  • Provider – There are many men who have fathered children and then walked away from them.  It doesn’t take a lot of brains to create a life, but it requires tons of self-sacrifice to be a father.  There may be times when you can’t find a job.  Your income doesn’t meet your budget needs, but to provide for your children doesn’t always mean monetary things.  The blessings you shower on them come in many forms – love, encouragement, advice, knowledge, confidence can be even more beneficial than things and they will go much further in the long run.
  • Counselor – By the time we become parents, we have a little life experience under our belts – at least enough to know that we’ve made some foolish mistakes.  We can’t teach our children how to avoid doing the same things, but we can give them the tools they need to make the right choices.
  • Encourager – We all want our children to succeed, but they won’t always succeed in areas that we expect.  It is the responsibility of a good father to help his children find what they are good at and then to encourage them to pursue it with gusto.  We can’t live our own lives through our children.  They are unique individuals with their own amazing gifts.  A father can help them discover those gifts and give them the courage to pursue their dreams.

Being a father isn’t an easy job, but consider it as an adventure instead and you will be reap benefits beyond your comprehension.

I DIDN’T MEAN TO SAY …

th

Someone once said, “Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time.  You won’t havea leg to stand on.”  There have been times when I’ve said something without thinking about the consequences of those words and how they might hurt, deflate, belittle, defeat or cause another to stumble.  My tongue doesn’t always follow the directions of my brain and it seems to take on a life of it’s own.

The tongue is a tiny muscle that can be more powerful than a well-developed bicep and yet it can do more harm.  Life would be so much easier if we had a script to follow, but part of who we are is our ability to communicate in an improvisational and spontaneous way.  Unfortunately, we can’t take words back once they’ve been spoken.  The damage is already done.  Admitting that we’ve spoken wrongly can do some good, but the sting of the tongue bites deeply and the words will linger.

Lord, I am a sinful being.  My words can als0 be a result of my sinful behavior.  When I am tempted to say or think things that might hurt another, I need to be reminded that I cannot even speak without Your intervention.  Keep my tongue bridled and may I use it only to Your glory and honor.  Help me to think before I speak and never to use my words to hurt another.  Give me the strength through Your Son, Jesus Christ.

James 1:19-20 “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;  for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”

WOE IS ME!

c22dd4376c7b9668be105867a86900ef

When it comes to being depressed, all you have to do is look at A.A. Milne’s character from “Winnie the Pooh,” Eeyore. That poor guy really had it bad – right? His biggest concern was making sure that his tail stayed on. Walking around with a rain cloud hanging over his head couldn’t be much fun either.

Do you ever feel like this? I know I have. As Eeyore once said while looking at his reflection in the water, “No better from this side. But nobody minds. Nobody cares. Pathetic, that’s what it is.”

There are times when I look in the mirror and feel just like that donkey. I feel sad, pessimistic, grumpy and lonely, but then I realize that the cloud hanging over my head is there because I put it there.  The little voice in my head that tells me to feel sorry for myself, can nag at my confidence and dry the very life out of me at times.

But,  I have the best friend ever.  My friend controls the universe.  He can lift me out of the dumps and set me on the right path again.  All I have to do is ask and He will be with me through all my anxious moments and lead me to a perfect place – a place where no more sadness exists.

When depression overtakes you – when doubt and fear deny you of joy – turn to the One who wants to be your BFF – the One who gave His life to prove it.

Psalm 23:4 promises that He provides for every need. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Thank you, Jesus! Amen

CARVED OF STONE

994851_4384441027502_947045264_n

ART & POETRY BY PAUL T.  & KATHY BOECHER©

The tempestuous waters seeped up from the earth and gushed forth,

The skies opened at the direction of God’s voice and poured upon a once rainless earth,

Cutting a path of destruction – severing trees – washing clean all the ugliness –

Only the faithful remained – a family of eight survived along with two of every species,

The rage of God could be tested no more,

But even in His anger, He created beauty from destruction,

The sound of His voice carved canyons out of granite,

Waters laid to rest in  lakes and rivers,

Mountains laid low as valleys rose up to meet them,

When the deluge subsided, the Master Architect had once again created a new world,

His work could not be destroyed,

His love endures forever,

Man’s disobedience continues to corrupt the world today,

Did we learn nothing from the past?

MY PRAYER FOR YOUR WEEK

awe-inspiring-religious-quotes (5).png

Life can be but a mere whisper or it can also be a consuming fire.
The way we approach it will define who we are and where we’re going.
If we go through life without any focus,
If we don’t set goals or make wise decisions,
If we try to accomplish anything alone – we are bound to stumble.
If we use each moment with purpose,
If we wake each day knowing that Jesus is our partner,
If we light the world with our enthusiasm,
We will turn that fire into a raging blaze.
Our spirit will soar on wings of eagles.
We will succeed in ways we never imagined.

WHAT IF?

th4UHYB2AT

What if you held the secret to a successful life hidden in your back pocket?  What if you possessed the cure for Cancer?  What if you knew the way to live forever, without pain, anxiety, depression, or fear? What if you had the answer for all the troubles that plague this world tucked away in a safe?  Of course everyone is looking for answers to these questions and maybe in our lifetime one will be answered, but soon another question will pop up to replace it.

If you did have the answers for these questions, would you be excited to share them with others?  Maybe, but you might choose to keep them to yourself so only you would profit from them.

We have the answers to all our earthly problems in God’s message to us – His written Word, the Bible.  That book may be collecting dust on your coffee table.  That treasure trough of life saving information just might give you and the rest of the world hope.  It contains healing, inspired words which can move mountains and change hearts.

Remember how your faith grew as you dug deeper into God’s Word?  Remember the comfort you received from it during troubling times?  Remember the truth of life giving salvation you gained by stumbling through its pages?

When we have a treasure like this we absolutely need to share it with others.  If not, it’s like hanging onto the cure for every problem and hoarding it for yourself.  Let others know about it.  God gave it to us to be shared.

BREAKING POINT

thIM3BVZMD

The top things that cause us stress in life have to do with our environment, our relationships, our work and our social lives.  Each of these things should also be rewarding, but when you think about it, the most anxious moments occur when we are faced with decisions regarding them.

When you compile those things and realize that you’ve been through each and everyone of them in just the past couple years, it could take you over the edge.  For example – we’ve been struggling for the past few years on selling our home.  We’ve lived in it for 24 years.  It’s a lovely place with much love poured into it during that time, but it’s become a nightmare to maintain as we age.

Our relationships are all solid, but when our oldest daughter and her family moved to another distant state, it was more than tough to say goodbye.  Many of our friends have died in the past year and more are fighting serious illnesses.  Families live far apart and we rarely get to see each other.  Within our immediate family we’ve experienced cancer, a stroke and other serious illnesses.

Though my husband and I are both “retired”, it’s necessary to continue to work at various jobs simply to make ends meet.  We’re two of the blessed ones, because our work has always brought us great satisfaction and we love what we do.  I sometimes wonder if I will continue to work right up until my dying day.  Many folks are unhappy in their jobs, aren’t paid what they think they deserve, and have conflicts with their bosses or fellow workers.

The social part of anxiety is based on wealth or lack of it, discrimination, being isolated from others, unemployed or harassment.  Money can make or break an individual.  Being alone is frightful and sad.  When you don’t have a job you feel useless and hopeless.  When you face adversity alone, your faith can waiver. We have never lacked for friends, but often when times go sour, many of them may desert you.

When everything runs smoothly, our stress levels are on an even keel, but when one of them fails, everything else suffers too.  There is only One who can relieve us of our anxiety, our suffering, our pain, our loss, our fears.  He’s the One who brought good news to a sin sick world – shed His blood for all sinners – suffered unbelievable physical and emotional distress and had no place to rest His head.  He’s the One who loves us unconditionally – who took our place – who died and rose again to prove that He is God and that His plan for humanity has been fulfilled.

When we reach a breaking point in life – when it seems that things will never fall into place for us – remember how important we are to our God.  He wants us to live good lives, but He’s got even better things in store for us in eternity. PERFECTION!

SUMMER

ORIGINAL ART & POETRY BY PAUL T. & KATHY BOECHER©

Sitting in the backyard chair,

Gazing at the haze filled air,

Skies of blue and not a care,

Reflections on a pond do glare,

Brilliant colors – lots to spare,

Flowers of red and blue to share,

Memories of a time so rare,

Blood was shed beyond compare,

Wars were won, not without prayer,

I sit here in my chair today,

With gratitude I now can say,

I’m glad for this Memorial Day.
