Ask any outdoor painter when it’s the best time to create art and they will undoubtedly say – in the morning or at twilight. During these brief moments, God has taken every color out of His paintbox to capture the perfection of light and shadows. Dancing recklessly through the foliage. Across the towering peaks, beside each tree branch or within a mountain lake, there is a rainbow – a brilliance – a masterpiece, just waiting to be transferred to a canvas. The camouflaged wildlife take on a shimmering, golden glow. Even the best artist can’t match God’s splendor, but they can try.
Traveling down a road less wandered,
Trying to catch the light,
Searching desperately,
For the right subject matter,
A vagabond, living in the moment,
On an expedition,
An adventure,
An unexplored trail,
He sets his easel,
Makes ready his paint,
A virtual studio in the great outdoors,
He attaches a canvas, fills his palette with color,
And waits,
For just the right light,
The glisten of diamonds on the water,
The perfect stillness of the atmosphere,
And then it begins.

Do you still do art? I’ve picked it up again after a ten year hiatus. Paul’s art keeps him alive for me.

No, it’s been quite some time since I practiced enjoying art crafts. I once used many materials including watercolors, pencil, pen/ink, and multimedia including photographic art. I never missed it as much as I do now. I didn’t take it seriously enough, I guess. I moved around so much I left pieces of me in the form of my arts to people I lost touch with. My last 14 years were in a monastic setting. I was kept busy enough I didn’t think much about my love of art as it applied to my own directly. I recently checked into how much it would cost to replace the materials now. Oh, wow. Lol. Thank you for asking.

I’m using some of the supplies Paul left behind. I started painting watercolors this spring because the weather deterred me from gardening. Suddenly I was on a roll. I find myself just doodling at times. You really don’t need to go all out on supplies. I know they’re expensive. The cost shouldn’t restrict you. Pick up a pencil and some paper and start there. I believe everyone has been gifted with unknown talents from God.
