I have to laugh at this Maxine cartoon. In the first place, what is this elderly woman doing outside on such a hot day? Why is her dog with her? Why is she planning to make and eat breakfast in these unbearable temperatures? We have been under a excessive heat warning for the last few days and it looks like it’s going to be that way for a few more. This is Minnesota – land of a thousand lakes. Maybe that’s why it’s so humid.
When warnings come out like this, we are confined to our air-conditioned homes. The elderly, those with breathing issues, babies and young children are told to stay inside to protect themselves from dehydration, heat stroke and other health related problems. I’m not a baby or a young child but I fall into this category. It kind of reminds me of the Covid epidemic. We feel like prisoners when we’re isolated.
I recall playing outside as a child in all kinds of weather. Our air-conditioning consisted of opening a few windows and maybe a portable fan. We’d go to one of those ten thousand lakes and swim like fish. If we didn’t have access to a lake, we filled buckets with water and put our feet in them. We drank a ton of water. We raised our children in homes unequipped with nothing but open windows and buckets of cool water. What I’m saying is we have become so dependent on some of these conveniences that we take them for granted.
When there is a weather crisis, we tend to freak out. The strain on power during a heatwave or extreme cold can leave us without electricity and then what? We lose the Internet, our devices turn out to be useless, we light candles and we panic. We feel helpless.
Relief will come in a few days and in a few months, we’ll be complaining about the below zero temperatures. It’s hard to imagine how the children of Israel survived for 40 years in the desert. Many of them didn’t, but God continued to provide for all their needs. Even their sandals and clothing remained like new until the waiting was over. I guess I can wait for a few days.
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand,” Isaiah 41:10

I was just thinking about all of this…it is so exaggerated. I know one day a few years ago everyone stayed home because of a massive snowstorm…we got two inches.

It seems that everyone is pretty uptight about the weather. I know I would probably drop dead if my air conditioner didn’t work. It doesn’t work in my car, so I make very quick trips.

Same thing! We just got a new air conditioner and furnace two years ago. Always grateful.

We’ve become so dependent that we die without them…we’ve become weak

We have become dependent. I truly think years before air conditioning people died younger.

I don’t know…my great grandmother lived to be 103, my grandparents were tough too, and I grew up in the desert, with no a.c., I’ve even lived without electricity, running water, and no phone…just look what a tough old bird, I am. I’m glad I know how to live independently, without all the condiments lol young people today, think they will die without electricity and the internet.

I never complain about the cold in winter. Even below-zero temperatures are better than hot humid weather. Thank God for AC — whoever invented it should be made a saint.

Whoever invented it is certainly headed for sainthood.
