One of the first things that endeared me to my husband was his ability to talk like Donald Duck. I know that isn’t the typical attribute to determine who to marry. Usually, outward appearance, stature, goals and accomplishments are in the forefront. For me, a sense of humor was a definite prerequisite. He continued to use this silly voice throughout our marriage and never failed to put a smile on my face. When I think about the things I miss, that happens to be one of them. OK, I’m not particularly a romantic, but I did watch cartoons on the morning of our wedding, so that tells you what kind of woman I am. I love to laugh.
Today is National Donald Duck Day, so I thought it would be appropriate to talk about this little creature. On June 9, 1934, Donald Fauntleroy Duck was born. In just 8 years he will be one hundred years old. Walt Disney designed this cartoon character as a friend to his already famous counterpart – Mickey Mouse. Donald made his debut performance in “The Wise Little Hen.” He would go on to obtain a permanent girlfriend – Daisy Duck – three years later. His nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie were also added.
So, what else can one say about this silly cartoon character? He won a few Academy Awards. He appeared in over a hundred productions. He continues to show up occasionally in newer versions. His rich uncle Scrooge McDuck was a stingy old duck with no use for this upstart.
I find it amusing that ducks and other animals, like dogs, mice, horses, etc., were and are used in comedy. Maybe it’s a way for us to identify with them. Maybe it’s looking at ourselves through their eyes. Maybe it’s just funny to laugh at a duck. After all, rubber chickens are quite hilarious. Pink flamingos make us smile. A stork brings babies to their new parents. Dogs go on a date and share a plate of spaghetti. A cow jumped over the moon. It’s been going on since time began. Animals play an important part in humor.
OK, I’m reaching here, but some days you just can’t think of something to write about. Today also happens to be the day that Nero committed suicide. I wonder why?
HAVE A GOOD TUESDAY AND REMEMBER TO QUACK LIKE A DUCK, OR DO THE CHICKEN DANCE, OR JUST LAUGH.

LOL…my husband wiggles his ears…what’s up doc…lol

Yeah…the first time we met, I thought he was too silly for me but God knew what He was doing, because Pete’s silly is exactly what I need.

Same with me and Paul. We both had silly senses of humor and played well off each other.

We’re opposites but somehow fit together and fill in for each other. He makes me laugh and I remind him when laughing is inappropriate lol

Donald Duck was one of my favorite cartoon characters when I was a very young. I also ādevelopedā a Donald Duck voice and your post prompted me to take it out of mothballs and try it out for the first time in ten or fifteen years. Thanks for the memories.

Good for you. I’m glad you revisited that long ago acquired voice. It’s good to bring back some of those memories for review.

I don’t know if it was a goose or a duck, but we were on an island at Walt Disney World on our honeymoon. My wife was wearing a pair of pants that were either bright orange or bright pink. I am leaning toward pink. The island had a variety of fairly tame wild animals, but this fowl swam rapidly across a little pond, hopped out and started nipping at her pants legs. She screamed and ran onto the nearby boat. The ranger was laughing and explained that the color of her pants was like a red flag in front of a bull. Otherwise the fowl never bothered with the guests. We all laughed, except my wife. She thought I should have wrung the neck of the agressive fowl and cooked it for supper.

Great memory at her expense. Still funny and something to hold close to your heart.

Yes, I have always remembered the stories of life. It’s strange how some people don’t have any stories to tell.
