ART & INSPIRATION BY PAUL & KATHY BOECHER
Paul often said he was born in the wrong century. He would’ve fit perfectly into the early 1800s. During the time of the Corps of Discovery Expedition, Lewis and Clark were commissioned to explore the lands acquired after the Louisiana Purchase and maps that would lead a path that would lead to the Pacific Ocean. Cameras were not yet in use, so artists would generally travel with explorers to sketch or paint the landscape, indigenous people and various plant life, So, it wasn’t surprising that he took on the character of just that kind of artist when he worked as an interpretive naturalist after retirement. Each of these reenactments required him to set up a tent and display some of his tools of the trade. He created his own set including various hats, along with eating utensils, clothing, blankets and a few completed paintings. Groups of students would visit his site along with others and hear all about what it was to be partner in such an endeavor.
His audience would be treated to a history lesson for about ten minutes and then move on to the next reenactor. Paul had a very interesting life through his own exploration of history. His ability to teach always held his audience in the palm of his hand. I learned so much from him during our life together, I miss him, I love him and i know he is enjoying the blessings of eternal life. I can’t wait to be reunited with him some day,
Nice and warm. Thanks!

Kathy, this post touches my own heart in many ways. Thank you for sharing Paul’s special gifts of teaching others to embrace the history of explorers such as those who were part of the Corps of Discovery.

Oh, I’d have loved to be in one of Paul’s audiences! What passion he brought to his work! I still remember one outstanding naturalist that would guide “my” fourth graders through a nature preserve, pointing out interesting plants, explaining how the people of long ago used the plants and trees, etc. His passion was contagious! I’m sure many remember (and were influenced by) Paul in the same way.

Yes he would often guide similar tours. One very little first grader asked if Mr Paul was a paleontologist and Mr Paul replied, “No, I’m just an old dinosaur.”
