In our world today, I think you would have to possess nerves of steel – be completely into yourself – believe you’re above reproach – have a spotless past – and possess a bit of insanity, to enter the political arena today.  The truth is, every one is haunted by something from their past.  Whether great or small, our sins always rear their ugly heads at one time or another.  If you’re in politics, you can almost count on that secret sin being uncovered.  With the current technology it can be done in an instant and a reputation is sullied and destined for the dump in no time.

We, the people, are often eager to digest news that points out the flaws of other’s.  To some it makes them feel superior. To others it’s like food that feeds the “enquiring mind.”  To most it has become the menu of the day, particularly when you want to hurt someone or destroy their popularity.

Kids post something nasty on social media about another kid and suddenly it goes viral.  Within a flash of time this kid is the subject of abuse for the day – is overcome with embarrassment and takes his own life.  We can’t blame the kids completely.  They’re simply following the lead of their parents, teachers and others who influence their young lives.

Do you have a secret sin that tugs at your heartstrings on occasion?  Does the devil use that weakness to draw you away from God? Would you be devastated if it became exposed to the world or even within your own family?  Jesus chastised a group ready to stone a woman for having an adulterous affair and he said to them, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”  The result spoke volumes as the group dispersed without a word or a stone being cast.

We’re all guilty of sin.  We were born with that Old Adam and it will stay with us until we die.  If we repent of our sins, God will surely forgive them.  In fact they were already erased when Jesus gave His life for us.  However, because we still carry original sin in our souls, we need to make confession to God on a daily basis.  Repenting first and meaning it.  Realizing that God no longer convicts us because of His great grace, we then go on living and trying to sin no more.  We cannot purchase our forgiveness.  We cannot work our way to heaven by doing good deeds.  We cannot hide anything from God..  He knows us inside and out and yet He loves us in spite of ourselves.

The devil wants us to keep remembering those old sins, so that our guilt overtakes us and we fall away from God because we don’t feel worthy of forgiveness.  Remember that Jesus didn’t pass judgment on the thief next to Him on the cross.  He promised that the thief would be with Him that day in paradise, because of his faith.

 “But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it – the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
