WALK IN MY SHOES . . .

SAUL, THE MAKER OF SANDALS & BOOTS

My name is Saul. I was named for one of Israel’s early kings. I make shoes and boots, but most often sandals. Since I live in an arid part of the world it’s a vital occupation. Sandals are needed to keep the feet cool and to sift the sand away from those same feet. I like to refer to myself as an artisan, because the work I do is more of a craft. Each shoe must be designed to fit perfectly. I start by measuring and making a pattern to follow. These specially crafted shoes will support the weight of the one wearing them. They need to be comfortable yet ready for action. I come from a long line of shoemakers. For as long as I remember, I’ve watched my father, my grandfather and those before them, make one of a kind footwear. We tan the hide ourselves to form leather which is the main ingredient of the shoe. We add things like reeds and other plant material that will withstand the elements.

I remember my grandfather talking about my people’s exodus from Egypt and the shoes that never wore out in the forty years they were used. God did this to show them His provision. The clothing they traveled in never wore out either. Can you imagine wearing the same shoes and clothes for forty years? God provided food for them too. How great He is. He cares for His people in so many ways. The shoes I make are designed to last for a long time, but 40 years?

Since feet are partially exposed, the sand will sift through. The outside air keeps the feet dry. Unfortunately, for the wearer, sandals had to be replaced often. People traveled almost everywhere by foot. Feet would often become blistered or skin would dry out so much it bled. It’s my job to make sure I used the best leather hides I could find – skins that would hold up under the pressure of rocky terrain as well as sand, pebbles and other debris.

The removing of sandals upon entering a home or business is common. We look at it as a practice of humility. Usually our shoes take a beating, but our feet do too. Being exposed to the elements wherever we go, means those sandals will have to be replaced. I fill orders for the Roman soldiers. Their sandals require a lot more attention. The soles must be thick enough to withstand hours of marching. The straps not only supported the feet, but ankles and legs as well. Different animal hides are used for that purpose.

Jesus, the promised Messiah, began His ministry during a time of oppression in Jerusalem. It seems my people have always undergone slavery of one kind or another. We pray daily for our Savior King to arrive. Many don’t recognize Him for who He is. Most expect another David or Solomon to come on a white stallion to conquer our enemies. Jesus is just like any other man. Yet He is filled with the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. He can heal people of their illnesses and cast out demons. All the words spoken of Him since the beginning of time, have been fulfilled by His doing. He speaks about a life after death – a place where no more sorrow exists. He has become quite popular with His words and deeds. The people are eager for someone to rescue them. I believe that Jesus is that Savior.

About atimetoshare.me

As I reach the end of my years, I find I have a lot of good information stored up in this old decrepit mind of mine. If I don't write it all down, it may vanish and no one will have the advantage of my thoughts. This is why this blog exists. I love the Lord, Jesus with all my heart and soul. I know I'm undeserving of all He's done for me, but I also know that His love is beyond my comprehension. I've always wanted to write. I never kept diaries, but tucked my thoughts in my head for future reference. I use them now in creating stories, plays, poetry and my blog. I continue to learn every day. I believe the compilation of our time spent with God will have huge affect on the way we live. I know I'm a sinner and I need a Savior. I have One through Jesus, Christ. My book, "Stages - a memoir," is about the seven stages of life from the perspective of a woman. It addresses all the things girls and women go through in life as they travel it with Jesus, and it is available on Amazon.com.

  1. “Walk in my shoes.” What a metaphor for many things, I won’t begin to list.
