This still life shows some tasty looking fruit, but what really stands out to me is the setting in which it is placed. The movement going on behind the fruit shows God’s hand in the provision. We often fail to thank God for our daily bread whether our tables are endowed with a bountiful feast or a simple meal with just the essentials. God never fails to provide for all His creatures great and small. As the critters outside begin to bury treasures for future meals, or chow down to keep their bellies full for hibernation we see a flurry of activity. As farmers bring in the last of their crops and store them or send them off to market, we see the result of God’s daily blessings. Matthew 6:26 reminds us of the way God provides often more than we can eat, or just enough. Whatever gifts we receive from Him it is up to us to give thanks for each one. He has given us our daily bread and so much more.
I’ll never grow to comprehend the power of your love,
You hold me fast. You treasure me. You guide me from above,
There is no other love like yours. You fill my every need,
You comfort and protect me. For my own soul you’d bleed,
So take my life and use it, to serve you in some way,
Help me to share your message today and every day.

Thanks for the reminder. Our daily bread comes as bread, and it’s a metaphor for all that God gives us daily. I recall the late Mother Angelica, founder of EWTN, the Catholic Television Network, used to say that if God took away His daily support of her, she would be nothing but a grease spot. That’s a fairly gross image, but it gets the point across really well.
