GROWING OLD, FADING FAST

No, this photograph is not me, although I’ve been known to wear a clown nose. I’ve also worn a fake nose and glasses while driving through a McDonald’s Drive-thru. When I found this photo on the internet, I couldn’t help but relate. I’m afraid I am a hopeless comic. I’ve dreamed of doing stand-up comedy but am afraid I’d have to sit down. But seriously folks, I did get a chance to fulfill that item from my bucket list last year. It was part of of a performance by the theatre group I belong to called “Jewels of deNial.” This group gets together once a week to brainstorm ideas from our past and turn them into a comedic radio shows, which we then take to senior centers throughout our area. It’s kind of like sitting around the campfire telling stories and laughing. Sometimes those stories get embellished and lead to more laughter.

As most of you know, my philosophy is that we can get through almost every situation if we look for the funny in it. That doesn’t mean we go around laughing at everything, but it does raise some eyebrows and cause snide remarks from those who don’t get the joke. The idea of laughing at everything isn’t always the best way to chase away the blues, but it sure beats sitting around feeling sad all the time. God did not create us to be anxious or depressed. So, I’ll finish today’s post with a poem.

ORIGINAL POETRY by KATHY BOECHER©

There are days when I wonder if I will survive,

And then I thank God, because I’m alive,

My hearing is failing, my body is sagging,

My breathing is short and my memory is lagging,

My senses have weakened with time and much use,

My teeth are most missing and some of them loose,

My muscles are dwindling, my skin is now dry,

I’m easily saddened and often do cry,

My eyes still may glisten, but often can’t see,

Do you that’s all that will be left of me,

When I float off this coil of decay and dark sin,

Will my Savior be waiting to welcome me in,

I know that He will for He said that He would,

He promised salvation and life that is good,

Though I wait and I wait for that day to arrive,

I still thank the Lord that He’s kept me alive.

About atimetoshare.me

As I reach the end of my years, I find I have a lot of good information stored up in this old decrepit mind of mine. If I don't write it all down, it may vanish and no one will have the advantage of my thoughts. This is why this blog exists. I love the Lord, Jesus with all my heart and soul. I know I'm undeserving of all He's done for me, but I also know that His love is beyond my comprehension. I've always wanted to write. I never kept diaries, but tucked my thoughts in my head for future reference. I use them now in creating stories, plays, poetry and my blog. I continue to learn every day. I believe the compilation of our time spent with God will have huge affect on the way we live. I know I'm a sinner and I need a Savior. I have One through Jesus, Christ. My book, "Stages - a memoir," is about the seven stages of life from the perspective of a woman. It addresses all the things girls and women go through in life as they travel it with Jesus, and it is available on Amazon.com.

I think it was Carol Burnett who said, “Comedy is tragedy, plus time!” 😊 which suggests to me that time is possibly of its essence!?!🤔

And as always, we’re thankful to be blessed by your gift of humor, that puts smiles not only on our faces but in our hearts! Thank you!

And finally, God’s word tells us best in Proverb 17:22 that “A merry heart does good, like medicine…”

  3. I am currently reading a book written by Dick Van Dyke and published in 2015. The book is titled Keep Moving: And Other Tips and Truths About Aging. He wrote the book when he was in his late 80s. He is now 97. He does a lot of dancing, he says in the book, which he believes keeps him young. He likes to dance in odd places like the grocery store aisles.

I can’t see myself dancing in the grocery store, but I do believe that exercise helps keep me in better shape. Except today — I just don’t have the energy right now to get on my exercise bike. Maybe I will try dancing around the house. 😀

When I turned 30, almost 4 decades ago, I thought that I was OLD. I wrote a poem about it at the time:

I sit and ponder, as I know
I must have done ten years ago
The sun shone down, I wondered how
The sun would find me sitting now?

Few things in life remain the same
A few more lines drawn on my face
A touch of graying in my hair
A bit more creaky is my chair

These things you see, but in my soul
I know such things I did not know!
We give and take, we live and learn
By light for candle wax we burn.

Nor would I go back, were there a way
Today’s not perfect, but better a day
And I wonder now, how will I be
When ten years older than ten times three?

On my 2023 birthday, I will have to change the last line to:
When ten years old than seventy?

    Time flies!

  4. Praises to the Lord for keeping my own leaking boat afloat. We are definitely blessed because our Creator included a “funny” bone in our inner selves.
