YOGA AND ME

It started a couple weeks ago. During my annual physical, my doctor suggested doing some yoga exercises to improve my balance. This would get me moving and help me to feel safe walking from one room to another. Not that I’m unsafe, but I tend to wobble a bit from time to time. A glass of wine could intensify the wobbling.

Following my appointment, I was in the midst of lots of family activity. There was my granddaughter’s graduation party, my grandson’s birthday, my own entrance into another year, and visits from our S. Carolina daughter and her husband, followed by a long awaited time with my sister from Tennessee. The yoga would have to wait.

I did happen to mention possibly starting this form of exercise and my son and his fiancee took notice. They gifted me a few days later with a whole bag full of tools to help me in the endeavor. So I had no choice anymore. Everyone seemed to be urging me to do this. Since I prefer exercising alone, it seemed appropriate to lay out the mat right in front of the smart TV. I’d plug into a video from which I’d learn all the basics and maneuvers without making a fool of myself. My son advised tuning in to a beginning class for old people. I love the way he words things. Anyway, I began the process this last Monday.

I used my voice command on the remote to locate a video. I spoke the following words, “Yogurt for Seniors,” and was bounced out of the system as being an unknown entity. Who knew? Yogurt for seniors is unknown? Anyway, after realizing my mistake, I tried again. Of course the instructor was about 12 years old and weighed almost 90 pounds. I felt right at home immediately. I figured it was only a twenty five minute video, so I should be OK for that short amount of time. Fortunately I was alone in the house while doing this, unless someone was sneaking in from cyberspace, I felt relatively comfortable going through the moves.

It was about ten minutes into the video that I realized my body had been idle for far too long. A year and a half of sitting in front of the computer and lack of physical activity had pretty much atrophied any flexibility that I may once have known. I’m not giving up. I decided to take it a little slow at first. I’m not getting involved with the spiritual aspect of Yogurt, but I think this will be a way for me to regain some strength and safely move about with falling and not being able to get up.

About atimetoshare.me

As I reach the end of my years, I find I have a lot of good information stored up in this old decrepit mind of mine. If I don't write it all down, it may vanish and no one will have the advantage of my thoughts. This is why this blog exists. I love the Lord, Jesus with all my heart and soul. I know I'm undeserving of all He's done for me, but I also know that His love is beyond my comprehension. I've always wanted to write. I never kept diaries, but tucked my thoughts in my head for future reference. I use them now in creating stories, plays, poetry and my blog. I continue to learn every day. I believe the compilation of our time spent with God will have huge affect on the way we live. I know I'm a sinner and I need a Savior. I have One through Jesus, Christ. My book, "Stages - a memoir," is about the seven stages of life from the perspective of a woman. It addresses all the things girls and women go through in life as they travel it with Jesus, and it is available on Amazon.com.

  1. LOL! You totally should stick with it. The health benefits are just phenomenal. One of my favorite jobs was doing physical therapy with seniors, mostly because I got to see real progress. It really works! Not only does your balance improve, but your flexibility if you do fall helps prevent injury.

I wonder if I could get my wife into yoga. She is getting wobbly and when she falls, she cannot get back up, even with my puny help. As for yogurt, I think I will back away from the computer and fix my wife and I a treat for tonight – Lemon juice in yogurt, kiwi fruit, nuts or pumpkin seeds, and maple syrup parfaits.

Balance is like a muscle that will atrophy with disuse and age. I realized this many years ago when I worked as a nurse aide in a nursing home, before I became an LPN.

I practice my balance every day by standing on one foot only as I brush my lower teeth. Then I stand on the other foot while I brush my upper teeth. Please be careful if you decide to try this, however. I don’t want you falling into the sink! If you keep it up every day, eventually you won’t even wobble while you brush on just one foot. Really! 🙂

Yes, I like the way your son words things, too, lol. Also, like you, I don’t want anything to do with the spiritual aspects of yoga. Because of this, I prefer a program called PrayFit by Jimmy Lena. It is available as a video or DVD on Amazon.

We are fearfully and wonderfully made! God created us with the ability to heal and restore even the muscles that have atrophied, which I find absolutely amazing!

We are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made. I had a totally clean bill of health from my doctor. Looks like I’ll be around for a while yet, unless I fall into the sink while brushing my teeth. Lol
