Leave it to Americans. In times of crisis, in times of violence and hatred, when the world around us seems to have gone off the deep end, we seem to cut to the chase. We have been a rebellious nation from our beginning. Times like this require creativity and there is a bounty of it.
Face masks have been mandated in our state. They were once deemed unnecessary, but we’ve seen the Chinese wearing them for years. Hmmm. A mask is almost always required when your in my line of work. Being in theatre, we put on an invisible mask every time we set foot on a stage. I have a collection of porcelain masks, which sit wrapped in tissue paper in a box. With our downsizing, I found it difficult to get rid of them.
Women use face masks to improve the condition of their skin, to remove blackheads and exfoliate. Masks are brought out at Halloween to alter the identity. Masks are used during surgical events, in a doctor’s office and to prevent germs from passing from one person to another.
Masks have been worn by the bad guys as they entered a bank to rip them off. I have to chuckle every time I see the commercial with the guy wearing a pair of fishnet panty hose over his head. At least he tried to follow directions.
Masks are also seen on super heroes. Batman, Super Man, Captain America and all the other good guys that don’t want anyone to know who they really are. They prefer to do their good deeds anonymously.
In our current world, we have been told that masks are necessary, they don’t always work, they aren’t really necessary and again that we must wear them. So instead of fight it, we create funny masks, colorful or camouflage, animal faces, big lips, smiley faces, or for those who like to recycle – old bras, sweatpants, underwear, plastic bottles, etc.
I happen to be one of those who has difficulty wearing a mask. Being a victim of chronic lung problems, allergies and other respiratory problems, a mask is like putting duct tape over my nose and mouth. I have given in to wearing them when I must, but I don’t spend any more time then necessary doing so.
This soon shall pass – or then again – we may have to wear masks for the rest of our time on this planet. I hope I’ll be able to recognize my friends when I leave.

I hate masks and never wear them if there’s any way to avoid it. As of this writing there is exactly one grocery store in my town that a person can enter without a mask, and that’s the only place I’ll shop… although I fear it’s only a matter of time before they also jump on the bandwagon and start requiring everyone to wear a mask.

Here in Southern California, some of us wear the masks and some people do not. But all stores that are open require masks to enter the establishment. I wear them, but I am so over it! I am praying that ends soon. I am tired of feeling like a prisoner because parks and some of our beaches are closed again. I hate being inside. I guess I miss being able to come and go as I please, without fear of contracting a deadly disease. Although I know God is greater, it’s still frustrating.
