FIELDS OF BLOOD

ART & INSPIRATION FROM KATHY BOECHER

The poppy remains the symbol of remembering our veterans.  The red color and the abundance of these lovely blooms, is indicative of Flanders Field during World War I where many soldiers lost their lives or suffered severe injuries. The fields were filled with blood during those battles and the poppy came to represent that loss.

A poem was composed by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae on the battlefront on May 3, 1915 during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium. This poem continues to remain a centerpiece of the conflict, but is also a call to remembering veterans of all wars.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Let us never forget the cost of war.  Our veterans deserve to be honored as heroes who were willing to make the greatest sacrifice.

About atimetoshare.me

As I reach the end of my years, I find I have a lot of good information stored up in this old decrepit mind of mine. If I don't write it all down, it may vanish and no one will have the advantage of my thoughts. This is why this blog exists. I love the Lord, Jesus with all my heart and soul. I know I'm undeserving of all He's done for me, but I also know that His love is beyond my comprehension. I've always wanted to write. I never kept diaries, but tucked my thoughts in my head for future reference. I use them now in creating stories, plays, poetry and my blog. I continue to learn every day. I believe the compilation of our time spent with God will have huge affect on the way we live. I know I'm a sinner and I need a Savior. I have One through Jesus, Christ. My book, "Stages - a memoir," is about the seven stages of life from the perspective of a woman. It addresses all the things girls and women go through in life as they travel it with Jesus, and it is available on Amazon.com.

  1. Thank you Kathy. I have never actually read that poem until now. So poignant…so sad.

The fact that it was composed on the field of battle makes it even more so. The cost of war is way too high, but those who have chosen to serve are willing to do so. They deserve so much more gratitude then we can ever give them.
