SKOL VIKINGS

minnesota-vikings-shock-new-orleans-saints-with-final-play-td-2

Up here in Norsekyville, we love our sports teams.  I’ve always admitted to being a Green Bay Packers fan, being the Wisconsin native that I am, but today it’s all about the Vikings.  In a stunning comeback, they had only seconds to go and scored an amazing touchdown flung by Keenan to Diggs and that was it.  What looked like a sure win for the New Orleans Saints took a quick turn.

This year the Super Bowl will be played in Minnesota and wouldn’t it be nice if the home team could be part of the celebration in the new US Bank Stadium?

I couldn’t help but see Facebook light up with the word “SKOL” all over the place and my natural curiosity put me in search of the actual meaning of the word.  The word is defined in the dictionary as a shortened version of the phrase “good health” or used when making a toast.  As I searched further, I discovered that the word originated from the old Norse word skal, which means bowl.  Further investigation led me to this.

Apparently the ancient Vikings (not the over the hill football Vikings) would make a bowl out of a skull obtained in battle (yuck) and drink from it.  My search ended there.

I love doing word research, but this was a bit too graphic for me.  Football often does that to me too.  Last night was an exception however.  It was fun to see this underdog team make such a terrific last minute play which carried them to an outstanding win.  Winning isn’t everything, but it sure is fun.

Skol, Vikings!

About atimetoshare.me

As I reach the end of my years, I find I have a lot of good information stored up in this old decrepit mind of mine. If I don't write it all down, it may vanish and no one will have the advantage of my thoughts. This is why this blog exists. I love the Lord, Jesus with all my heart and soul. I know I'm undeserving of all He's done for me, but I also know that His love is beyond my comprehension. I've always wanted to write. I never kept diaries, but tucked my thoughts in my head for future reference. I use them now in creating stories, plays, poetry and my blog. I continue to learn every day. I believe the compilation of our time spent with God will have huge affect on the way we live. I know I'm a sinner and I need a Savior. I have One through Jesus, Christ. My book, "Stages - a memoir," is about the seven stages of life from the perspective of a woman. It addresses all the things girls and women go through in life as they travel it with Jesus, and it is available on Amazon.com.

When I was a little girl my two favorite NFL teams were the Rams and the Vikings—I think it had something to do with the helmet logos 🙂
