I have a fear of heights. I’m also uncomfortable in small spaces. I’ve had dreams about dying on the ocean. These are not unusual phobias, but did you know there is a fear of going to bed? Some people are threatened by the number 8. There is a fear of going to the zoo! There are phobias for hundreds of other things too.
We all suffer from this malady called fear. It’s part of our human nature. Many seek psychiatric help for relief. Some try to overcome fear by doing just the thing they are afraid of in order to overcome it. Others believe they can think their fears away. Some folks are overcome by their fears and live in fear of their fears happening at any moment. What a desperate situation to be in. These fears can be so real, they become a way of life for some.
Some of the fears experienced can be a result of a traumatic life memory, which can trigger a negative feeling and cause the trauma to actually return vividly in their minds. What are you afraid of? Maybe your life has dealt you a bad hand and you’re facing the loss of a job – a serious health issue – the loss of a loved one – financial ruin. All of those things strike fear into our minds and the devil knows it. He loves when bad things happen to us, because it leaves us wide open for his lies.
When God’s children are afraid, they’re told to depend on their heavenly Father for refuge.
Psalm 34:4 says, “I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”
What a comfort it is to know that someone else is willing to take that load from us. Fear will never be completely out of our lives until we reach paradise, but when they become unbearable, we know that we can get through them with God’s help. All things are possible with Him.

Yes, reminds of the quote that almost all Satan’s power is in fear. I find I tend to fight it more as I get older somehow. Rationalising never seems to help, till I remember just how big God’s love is for me. “Perfect love casts out fear.” My fears can be big, but God is bigger!

I think it was Mark Twain who said that more people die in their own beds than on a train (which was new technology back then). The logic, he reasoned, was to refrain from going to bed….
In his own excellently witty way, he shows how unfounded most of our fears are, a true weapon on the enemy to get our focus off of our Sustainer and make us less effective….

I fear driving I-95… the truckers tailgate and speed… my husband and I were once nearly caught between two knife-jacking semis…
I always pray before driving on I-95. Great post, Kathy! Thankful that God cares for His children.

He indeed does take on our fears and calms the storms. I have a lot of fears, especially now that i’m getting older.

Thank you for posting this, it was good for me to read. Especially since I learned yesterday that I’m getting laid off after 27 years at the same job. And now my wife is disabled, and we’re in process of adopting our 3 year old little girl. But I guess there’s never a good time to lose one’s job. But God will provide, I have no doubt about that. But still, every bit of encouragement from Christians like yourself Kathy is appreciated and needed.
(And I’m scared of heights too). Flying is almost unbearable for me.

At times you think you have it together, then your GERD comes back with a vengeance and you realize that you were fearful or worried about something. With stronger faith, there is less fear, but we are still human.

I had to look up GERD and then realized this is one of those things I suffer from. God plants all those little warning devices in us too, doesnt he? To remind us to let him take care of things.

I first had GERD in the Army in 1979. It has been under control for the most part for quite some time. As such, when I have a flare up lately, I pray first. What am I holding onto that needs to be released?
