After seeing “Gone With the Wind” as a young girl, my heart was set on moving south so I could talk like they do and live the life of serendipity. I’d sit on veranda of my country mansion sipping mint juleps and saying things like “fiddle dee dee” all day long. Then I discovered how hot it is down there and quickly changed my mind.
For Scarlet O’Hara, this was her land and she would do anything to retain it. She always got her heart’s desire. She was the true flower of the south, yet quite spoiled and used to getting her way. When the Civil War tore her land apart, her true inner strength came forth and she became the heroine we all wanted to be. Her final line in the movie, “Tomorrow is another day,” has become the mantra of those who know how to face adversity with determination and spunk.
We all struggle with either physical, spiritual or emotional strain. It’s something we have in common as the human race. We may succeed only to fail. We may gain happiness only to suffer loss. We may be healthy one day and get a bad diagnosis the next. Our lives are filled with ups and downs – sometimes more than others.
We can’t go through life beating ourselves up for not being perfect. Our homes may not look something out of Pinterest. Our clothes may be wrinkled from sitting in the dryer too long. Our checkbook may show a negative balance. Our jobs may have been cut. Our lives may be undergoing extreme changes. I could go on and on, but the fact is this isn’t a perfect world.
We struggle, but we move on. God hasn’t promised that our lives would be easy, but he gives us the courage to face each and every day. God has placed that spunk within each one of us. Some are loaded with it, while others have to dig deep to find it, but we all possess this wonderful trait. Waiting until the bottom falls out isn’t the time to test it. Every day can become new when we trust in God’s promises.
As for Scarlet, I much preferred Carol Burnett’s interpretation of the heroine.
frankly my dear……..
indeed, I can sip all the mint juleps my heart desires while swatting the gnats as I sing fiddle dee damn blasted bugs….and it’s still hot as blazes!!!!
But wasn’t that a classic and then Carol came along and made it even that much better……
Now where did I put my julep……
