Yesterday was like an old fashioned fourth of July for us.  We went to the park in the center of our little town, carried our lawn chairs to a nice shaded area along with many others, and sat and waited to hear some wonderful patriotic music.  It was like a reminder of days of long ago, when we would do the same thing.

The humid air was infused with a gentle breeze and the canopy of trees gave just enough relief from the sun.  I looked around at the audience, which was mainly elderly.  A few children donned in red, white and blue flitted in and out, but the majority of people were our age.

The flag was proudly display at the front of the band shell as several musicians endured the heat and played their hearts out for a grateful audience.  Root beer floats and lemonade were also available.  The entire experience was topped off with meeting up with a few friends from the area that were also looking for something special to do on this momentous day.

I don’t usually dress the part, but I have the heart of a patriot.  I think most of my generation still possess a great love for our country.  We are proud of our freedoms.  We stand when the “Star Spangled Banner” is played and we even try to belt out the words with our faltering voices.  We remember the many battles fought, just during our lifetime, to protect our rights and honor democracy.  This one day in which we  honor our nation, isn’t just about fireworks and celebration.  It’s about the ability to do those things without fear of repercussion.

As we pack up another Independence Day, let’s keep our patriotism alive a little longer than just a few days.  I feel that I’ve been given an opportunity once more to celebrate the day like I did when I was a little girl.  I’m loving my new home town and my new “old” house.
