DOES GOING TO CHURCH MAKE YOU A CHRISTIAN?

Many think that they’re above reproach or no longer considered sinful if they simply attend church.  Many are also there because they feel safe from the world outside.  Some even use church as a place to compensate for the sins they commit every day.  Unfortunately, going to church isn’t going to make you perfect.  Only God can do that.

The church itself is full of sinners just like you and me.  It’s an imperfect body of soiled and ugly people – often dressed in their most beautiful clothes and looking like a million bucks.  Within this seemingly perfect refuge lies deceit, judgment, anger, adultery, homosexuals, bigotry, liars, thieves and every other kind of villain you can think of.  This is one of Satan’s most popular places to visit, because it’s filled with imperfect people who are subject to sin.

However, when you look at the ministry of Christ, it took place in the most unusual places. He went to the core of humanity – to the sinners of the world – to all those who needed His healing.  He still does.  Through His Word, the Bible, He comes to the broken hearted, the poor in spirit, the lost and condemned and those who need Him most.

When God looks at our wretched condition, He’s like the prodigal Father who longs for us to return to Him.  He loves when we ask for His help, because He’s always eager to give it.

Going to church isn’t going to guarantee our salvation, but if our church is preaching the truth of the Bible, we will be nourished each week – fed with the good news of the Gospel – that our sins are forgiven through Jesus.

The church body is filled with sinners and hypocrites that need to hear that message every day.  Otherwise we are no better than the Pharasees of Jesus’ time.

About atimetoshare.me

As I reach the end of my years, I find I have a lot of good information stored up in this old decrepit mind of mine. If I don't write it all down, it may vanish and no one will have the advantage of my thoughts. This is why this blog exists. I love the Lord, Jesus with all my heart and soul. I know I'm undeserving of all He's done for me, but I also know that His love is beyond my comprehension. I've always wanted to write. I never kept diaries, but tucked my thoughts in my head for future reference. I use them now in creating stories, plays, poetry and my blog. I continue to learn every day. I believe the compilation of our time spent with God will have huge affect on the way we live. I know I'm a sinner and I need a Savior. I have One through Jesus, Christ. My book, "Stages - a memoir," is about the seven stages of life from the perspective of a woman. It addresses all the things girls and women go through in life as they travel it with Jesus, and it is available on Amazon.com.

Without love in action – as His hands and feet beyond the walls of our church, we should posers.

    Hi Kathy!

This was good. I had to ponder on it for a bit. We fundamentalists Baptists, for the most part, put church membership very high on the list of things a Christian must to. I don’t disagree with that stance at all, as I agree it is a vital part of our Christian lives for a number of reasons.

On the other hand, I have seen the entire issue taken to levels that are not Biblically supported. It can be carried to the point where some think that ensures their eternity. Not so, as you so properly pointed out.

    Good stuff

I’m glad it caused you to ponder. My Lutheran church is also heavy on church attendance, but more because of the relationships, lifting each other up in prayer and encouragement, and especially being fed the Word of God each opportunity we worship. Like I said, we aren’t as far apart as most folks think. When we place our works ahead of the One who completed the work, we are taking credit for it. Thanks for your comment as usual!

  3. Funny…I wish more sinners WOULD seek solace in church. Instead, people worry about walking into church and being judged for their appearance or their demeanor or their reputation – tattoos, rings, clothing, even smell or filth (you can tell I’m a millennial).

Fortunately, I attend a church where most everyone readily acknowledges their sin right along with God’s grace. They would not look down on people. I just wish more in my community knew this.
